Hi Rotem! just to say that this has been the most valuable, easy to follow and powerfull topics I´ve seen so far and everything in just 13min minutes. This video also delivers the importance to have a printed version of the Real Book. About tritones, very well explained. My teacher just taught me tritones and his way of explaining was to substitute any dominant 7 chord in the progression with it´s #4 dominant 7th. Video request: what about 2nd dominant substitution? are those the same as tritones?? can you talk about it. Thanks a lot and will follow you channel and patreon right now!
my mind is blown! jazz has never really clicked for me with all the crazy chord changes, but the way you voice chords makes SO much sense! thank you so much! Subscribing right now 🙌🏼💯
What I love is how well used and worn your sheet music book is. That's a thing that you have spent a lot of time with, and it represents an important part of your life because of that. That makes it a special object worthy of respect and admiration. Pleasing. :-)
FINALLY! A video lesson with a good camera closeup of the neck, frets and fingering positions! This makes a huge difference on making this an enjoyable endeavor. Thank you.
Wow... I can't believe more people haven't found this. Rotem, I found you with Paul last week. I LOVED that intro to jazz. I love the sound of jazz, but it seems so foreign to me. I love to listen to you describing what you're doing. Very inspirational. I can sit for 20 minutes just playing that E-dim, A7, D7, G7 to C7#9 progression. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Rotem, regardless of which of your videos that I watch, I get inspired and want to grab the guitar and practice. I've played guitar for more than 65 years (!) but you keep clarifying things to me. Your engagement is like a virus, you are a gifted teacher, thank you.
Am new here, I knew you from a masterclass in PickUpMusic, and am glad I subscribed , am astonished by your playing, knowledge and your generosity of giving us such golden information, thank you sir, you're amazing!!
This wonderful information!! I've played for a living for decades, by ear with very little knowledge of theory. It's time to change that at the age of 62, and you are a great teacher. So SUBBED!!
Wow this is great. Jazz guitar really is the opposite of rock guitar huh. Like rock guitar is "just play the root and the 5th", jazz is more like "play all the notes EXCEPT the 5th"
There's something retro about the delivery and visual aspect of this video. Quite wholesome. You're a great teacher, no fancy gimmicks or edits; just straight to the point of the lesson. Thank you.
Thank you so much Rotem, you have a beautiful sound and touch. 👍🏽 Walking bass is really cool and any lessons on that subject would be awesome 😎 You are Amazing
Got to admit that you have skill to explain things which are more or less complex in a way, that eventually they are becoming obvious. Secondly, I cannot explain it, but some kind of really good vibe can be sensible when watching your vids :) Anyhow - cannot wait to finish job and grab guitar to practice!
4:27 you show the dim Shell voicing and you say we can use it when we need to play a half diminished but it isn’t it full diminished because it’s a double flat 7/ 6th?
He made a little mistake when he was talking about the Diminished 7th voicing. That voicing could be Gmi6 but not Gmi7b5. Gmi7b5 is has a b7 like a minor 7th chord, not a bb7 like a diminished 7th chord. Gdim7 is spelled G Bb Db E and Gmi7b5 (half diminished) is spelled G Bb Db F. Small difference but you'll notice it!
I had not heard of no 5th shell chords before . Looking at this seems a great way to visualize the main tones, keep track of the role of each note in a chord. Another way though to break into real book is through using the 4 inversions of jazz chords using only d g b e strings.
Found this gem today and I love how you explain shell chords. What sets you apart (for me) is the fact you not only explain a certain technic or shape, you also provides context and how to use it, while acknowledging that the most important thing at the end of the day is that it sounds good. My interpretation of that is to know the rules so you know how to break them with grace. Thank you for a great video.
I'm no expert but i assume it has something to do with the fact it contains G and it's minor third, and there it also contains a tritone, which is a characteristic of Gm7b5. So I think it just might be close enough in "vibe"
@8:00 or so he explains that when doing shell voicing you ignore inversions as well as extensions apart from the 7. The E7/A is just an E7 in second inversion so you’d just ignore the A in a shell voicing and read it as E7. You can just let the bass player put the A there.
Thank you so much ! So many years trying to learn jazz and finally someone that know where to start and how to explain it ! Thank you Paul as well for letting us discover this hidden gem on youtube !
I was wondering what happened to my 1974 Real Book. Thought I left it at Berklee! A place called the Copy Cop used to sell’m for 10 bucks in Copley Sq!
Really helpful video. In next video Can you talk about reharmonization technique from basic like happy birthday song to complex harmony. I mean in depth.
Thank you so much! Last time I went to intro to jazz class after practicing chords, my professor told me "You need to change how you grab chords. those are for pop/rocks" and I had no other idea how to do it. This explains it so well for me!
Thanks, you’re very smart in teaching! I’d like a video where you teach the routine to learn improvisation, without the study of armonic theory (i can do it to myself). A lesson to understand how to acquire the jazz language from in a practical way (transcribing, transposing etc…) Thanks a lot! You are great!
I think Jazz is speaking to me, slowly, I listen to you talk and I understand. But when I hear you play it’s like I’m being taken by the hand by someone I know into some place I’ve been before. I think I want to learn how to play jazz on guitar because it’s speaking to me.
Hello Rotem. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us and congrats for your music, I love it! This is quite an old post so I don’t expect you to answer but anyways… I’ll give it a try. Both 6th and 5th string voicings can be moved to the 5th and 6th respectively. I was curious to understand if they are used like that as well, as clearly the main difference between the shapes is that the 7th and 3rd are inverted. Thanks and do keep playing !!!
Thank You very much! I have jazz band rehearsal tommorow and there will be some songs that I never played or even listened to. Gonna use Your method and play them!
I never thought that my musical inspiration is going from pure Metallica to Hardcore to Djent/Deathmetal and finally you. Jazz. You’re amazing, after 14 years of guitar playing I’m still learning so much. Thank you!
I was playing these voicings with 4 notes simplifying to 3 opens up possibilities for motion and clarifies the harmonic structure thanks for a light bulb moment
Thank you so much for this video. Helped me a lot to understand the meaning of 7 chords. I realized something while I was training this. Why the shape of the 6th string is not the same of the 5th, it would work exactly the same way?
Might be the best video I've ever seen to bring lots of ideas together in cohesion. It can be a little difficult at times if one isnt a music student per se. The reference to numbers can be confusing - nuances like going from F to B in a chord progression ... I to the IV ... where as playing the root 3rd and 7th first and foremost and only occasionally flatten a 5th or 7th for effect. This can all be a little difficult for a layperson to follow but its starting to make sense
First of all great video. I just learned the drop 2 voicings and the inversions for those but I feel like there is more and this is the more. I would love to see your approach on harmonizing a melody on the spot. Like if you and your band are trying to write a song and someone comes up with a melody, how to make cool chords around that melody. Thanks man you're awesome 👍

Personally I feel that I owe Paul Davids for introducing me to you Rotem. Both of you stand out to be my favourite mentors online. Top class.
Oh man! Thanks Luis!
@@RotemSivanGuitar truly a hidden gem you are..thanks for the masterclass.
+1 Instant follow.
Also, check out Emanuel Hedberg. Awesome content. ua-cam.com/users/EmanuelHedberg
Paul David’s over edits his videos too much personally it’s hard for me to pay attention with all the jokes and stupid edits he makes.
Same here. Thanks to Paul Davids for helping me find your channel.

I'll try my best!

That clean tone cures corona virus, it’s just so good

True. It's that "go home, lie down and eat chicken soup" tone

Brilliant, why didn’t I know this? Thanks Rotem
🤘
Why does your guitar sound like a piano?
You are the best guitar teacher I've ever had. I love it. Thank you so very much.
Also, what is that 'jazz bible?'
Hi Rotem! This might be a silly question, but are there shell voicings you use for "normal" chords (ie. no 7th/chord extensions)
That is just a normal triad. Root-Third-fifth. You can remove the fifth of You want.
She’ll voicing means only the notes played that define the chord to make it what it is. A standard triad chord is already a shell pretty much.
Am new here, I knew you from a masterclass in PickUpMusic, and am glad I subscribed , am astonished by your playing, knowledge and your generosity of giving us such golden information, thank you sir, you're amazing!!

Chords 13,11 & 9 are..."shell less" ? :D
If I play 1,3,7,13 - it will be shell voicing or not?
I appreciate your insights. But it's confusing to speak in alpha note-names (A-B-C-D, etc). Music is based on 1-3-5-7, etc.
Wow this is great. Jazz guitar really is the opposite of rock guitar huh. Like rock guitar is "just play the root and the 5th", jazz is more like "play all the notes EXCEPT the 5th"
Interesting with shell voicing.
When always playing the root I fear some clash with the double bass. How to avoid.
Hello rotem! Thanks a lot for your work. Can you speak about jim hall voicing? It would be very cool ! 😀
Great lesson focused on simplifying the mystery of things.
thanks for everything as always!!!! love coming back to these videos after exploring the ideas that you bring to the table.
Big love
4:25 why do u use the shell chord for diminished which has 1 3 bb7 in half diminished as half diminished doesn't have that major 6th quality in it
There's something retro about the delivery and visual aspect of this video. Quite wholesome. You're a great teacher, no fancy gimmicks or edits; just straight to the point of the lesson. Thank you.
Freddie Green chords.

i just discovered you so thanks. but my question is rootless shell chords????? is this a thing?
thanks for sharing and communicating! thanks for sharing and communicating
Your channel will be big soon! Keep it simple and in steps! Keep it broken into small digestible chunks!
Thanks! i'm trying to be as clear as i can
Hi Rotem! Thank you lots for this masterclass! One question, what metronome/drums backtrack do you use to practise?
I use meronomics app & sometimes drum genius
Such a great guitarist but so few subscribers! When I’ve seen your channel, the 1st thing I’ve done was clicking on the bell!
🙏 thanks!
playing a seven chord on a beautiful clean tone is the best sound you can get out of a guitar.
your tone is immaculate.
12:00
For altered fifth chords, would you add the 5 and remove the 1?
I will try that... Simple is a clever way to start... Thanks
You can use the "dim" shell chord for:
Dim7
M7b5
m6
7 (2nd inversion)
what about 9th elenth and thirteenth chords ?? do they have that shell voicings ??

Thanks Sivan!
why dont you say you mute the fifth string while you strumming
Could you explain, why the Gm7b5 can be played with the 1 b3 6 shell while Gm7b5 contains the 7 instead of the 6? I don't get it :,/
I'm no expert but i assume it has something to do with the fact it contains G and it's minor third, and there it also contains a tritone, which is a characteristic of Gm7b5. So I think it just might be close enough in "vibe"
Clean and expressive sound ....inspiring.
I would like to see the 6th dim. (Barry Harris) minor and major harmonized scales.
Thank you.
Oh yea, that is a good one
What a great lesson! Answered a bunch of questions I had; thanks!
What she'll voicing should you player over a slash chord? E.g. E-7/A
The E-7 shell voicing or an A?
@8:00 or so he explains that when doing shell voicing you ignore inversions as well as extensions apart from the 7. The E7/A is just an E7 in second inversion so you’d just ignore the A in a shell voicing and read it as E7. You can just let the bass player put the A there.

He makes that "aahhhh" sound that paul davids makes lmao
Amazing and inspiring. I’m a musician and this gives me lots of fuel for the imagination, so thank you! 💜
Oh thanks so much Marina! Means a lot
awesome video dude. thank you.
Just cuz you begged for likes
What did you play in the intro there 😳😳😳
How dare you imply that minor chords aren't beautiful
Lol
Thanks for this lesson. Love jazz, but am a zero when it comes to playing it. Will subscribe!
🙏 thanks!
There’s another name: Drop 2 chord
What is that cork thing in your guitar? what is it for?
Whatever happened to that fretless?!
What a great video - thanks!
Dude, thanks for your videos. I came from Paul Davids channel, and I always quest myself everytime i see you playing. How you get that beautiful tone?
Why do you strap your head stock?
I was wondering what happened to my 1974 Real Book. Thought I left it at Berklee! A place called the Copy Cop used to sell’m for 10 bucks in Copley Sq!
The shell chord for half diminished chords is not the minor shell chord ?
Not really
@@RotemSivanGuitar But R b3 b7 are in m7 chords and in m7b5...
Really helpful video. In next video Can you talk about reharmonization technique from basic like happy birthday song to complex harmony. I mean in depth.
