On May 22nd, 2023, a 5-year-old child, whom we will call Jimmy, and his 14-month-old sister, whom we will call Jill, were playing in their driveway. It was common to see the neighborhood children playing in the forest around the subdivision and Jimmy and Jill’s outdoor fun was just another day of laughter and fun for them. All around the children’s home, the trees pushed in very close to every house in their neighborhood, giving each one a feeling of privacy and isolation. The dense undergrowth not only granted the residents solitude, it also allowed wildlife to come within a few yards of homes in secrecy.
As the children played outside, their mother took care of chores and kept an eye out for the kids. Jimmy’s momma heard him crying out for her and emerged from the home to see a horrifying sight. A black bear had emerged from the brush near the home and had set its focus on her babies.
As she ran toward the bear, it fled leaving her children injured and bleeding, but alive. She quickly loaded them into the family vehicle and drove them to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital about 12 miles to the north as the crow flies. Once the children were admitted to the emergency room they were treated for bear bites and claw wounds. Though their injuries were not life-threatening, the incident was very concerning to residents and wildlife officials.
Authorities immediately knew they needed to make sure the citizens were safe. Based on the description of the bear from the children’s mother, they knew that they had no chance of differentiating the bear that had attacked the children from the others. They decided to set out two culvert traps around the subdivision to see if they could catch the bear before it could attack anyone else.
Jimmy and Jill’s clothing was swabbed for DNA from the bear’s saliva and the samples were rushed to Dr. Jane Huffman, of the Wildlife Genetics Institute at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. A profile was pulled from the samples and now the wildlife officers had to track down the bear that matched it.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission monitored the traps and captured a bear in each trap on the evening of May 27th. One of the bears was a boar and the other a sow, and both appeared healthy. DNA samples were pulled from both bears and rushed to Dr. Huffman for comparison to samples pulled from the clothing.
After a few days, the results were back. They revealed that the boar was not involved in the attack on the children, but the sow was involved. She was immediately euthanized and her remains were examined for rabies. The rabies test is done only after the animal is dead, so her euthanization was part of the investigation. She was not found to have the disease which allayed fears of officials as well as area residents.
The boar was relocated to a remote stretch of forest far from the subdivision in hopes it would establish itself there, away from people. The Pennsylvania Game Commission estimates that the state has a healthy population of 15,000 black bears. Statements were issued to the public citing that the reasons for the attack on the children were unknown, but could have been caused by the bear being cornered by the curious children. They stated that dogs may trigger attacks, but the children were not accompanied by a dog.
Black bear sightings in Pennsylvania have been rising, alarmingly around larger cities. They have been reported in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware, and Chester Counties, and have been caught on security cameras mounted at homes many times. Black bears have been observed in Highland Park and Hill District in the city of Pittsburgh, less than one mile from downtown. I could find no source that indicated any city in Pennsylvania has a bear hazing program to drive bears away from urban areas.
After reviewing the facts surrounding this episode, I have a few questions for you. Do you think development is encroaching on black bear habitat in Pennsylvania? Would a municipal hazing program receive your support if you lived there? Was this bear trying to eat the children or was it somehow cornered by them? Do you think the bear would have killed or severely injured Jimmy and Jill if it hadn’t been driven off? I will gladly read and reply to your thoughts, so please post them in the comments section below, and let’s talk about it!

I’m in central Washington state in the mountains, most of my neighbors are weekenders from the city. One weekend I noticed that my neighbors and their grandkids were over at their cabin below me. I was outside on my deck relaxing later that day when all of a sudden a black bear was running across my yard directly to where those children were playing. The kids were playing between their dirt driveway and a small area where the bear was headed, so that bear was going right to them. I jumped out of my chair and yelled BEAR, stay still kids so loud. The grandpa was right around the corner, the bear ran so fast by those kids thank God. I think my scream scared him. I’ll never forget that.

There is a reason why in the recent past, bears and other predators were killed on sight or even had bounties on them. That wasn't right, of course, but letting the pendulum swing too far into "touchy-feely" territory will get people hurt and killed and not be good for the wildlife either. All wildlife needs a healthy fear of people, their houses and roads.

I live in NE Pennsylvania and have personally seen four black bears in my local area. Never had any issues though. I live approximately 28 miles from the attack site in this video. Some of my co-workers also have black bears sniffing around their homes on a regular basis. Some of them are quite robust. One of these actually laid his ears back and popped his jaws when he saw my co-worker. This just happened on 5/5/24. He showed us pics of the bear he took with his phone. Nice size - probably around 350 pounds or more.

I grew up w/ them in British Columbia. There were tons of them on Vancouver Island and living w/ black bears was just part of life on the island. I counted 18 at one dump drop near Port McNeil when I was young in the 70's. My 15th birthday we went to a favourite river and had a bbq. Bear were fishing in the rapids, less than 20 feet from us. We didn't have to worry about them bothering us for our food at that time, as their favourite food was super plentiful then, and they just happily gorged on salmon. The country school bus used to have to stop for them to cross the gravel road. Yep, life w/ bears. Moving to Ontario, I know they are around, but have never had an encounter w/ one yet, not like the pretty regular occurrance it was back in BC.

I was chased by black bears numerous times growing up. As kids, we always leashed our dogs and took them into the woods with us. The dogs would alert us if a bear was in the area. A young girl was chased by a large wolf in our neighboring town last week. I’ve seen a black bear walk away on his hind feet carrying one young pig under each arm. What i didn't know was that they like worms and bugs. I heard a loud crash the other night and went to investigate what it was. I've been running hunting dogs for many years and have found animals, including dogs are drawn to small children's voices. It's a predatory instinct that all carnivores / omnivores have.
The reality is that bears have been hunted heavily until about 75 years ago. This hunting reduced aggressive bears.

That's what someone else was saying. Culling the population as need be, kept the bears more respectful and afraid of humans. Now it's all up to the wild life authorities and they only take them out if they pretty much hurt a human. Bears are losing that healthy fear of humans, and they are more plentiful than they used to be in certain areas.

I grew up in Alaska. Bears were everywhere and we became accustomed to being bear aware. Living in rural Alaska I never went out of the house without a big sidearm. Only had one occasion where I felt very threatened. I was standing in the middle of a small river fishing and just felt something was watching me. I looked to the side to see a large black bear standing watching me. That bear became very tasty bear sausage. Bears need to be hunted or they loose their natural fear of humans. If a black bear attacks he intends to eat you. Black bears and polar bears in my opinion are the most dangerous.

The ex special forces guy was so freaked out by the amount of black bears he slept in a tree. Nowhere else in the world did he refuse to sleep on the ground. I checked out the PA woods. There are signs of bears all over just feet into the woods. The woods there have this thick dark canopy that makes the hair on your neck stand up. It's creepy knowing bears are in there. Bears eat the young of big mammals. Absent adults, it doesn't take an expert to understand bears see opportunity.

All of PA is black bear country we have many in our neighborhood we don’t have sidewalks and small forested areas.
Edit: I live in Cumberland county which is near Harrisburg (the capital) the game commission doesn’t have a bear hazing policy instead they trap and release nuisance bears. Problems in our immediate area have been so rare that they really don’t need a hazing program. We had a huge black bear in our neighborhood a number of years ago who ended up getting hit by a truck on the road she was the only problem bear we’ve had in my 23 years living in this area. My mom didn’t even know black bears lived in the area she thought they were only in the nearby mountains 😂 as a biologist I had to inform her otherwise. I’m hoping one day to be able to work with the game commission on bears but not sure how likely that will be.

I live in PA too, south of Wilkes-Barre ~2 hours. It's a pretty straight shot up I-81 which is about 30 min away, (the on ramp to I-81).
I grew up aside the woods & have spent most of my life here, and many hours in the woods. I saw one black bear up close, it was up a tree in a neighbor's yard. No one was harmed and she called the game commission who dealt with the situation.
I was taught to handle firearms from a young age. I told my youngest adult son he should go with me to the gun club and learn to shoot. He didn't seem too interested until the other night.
He was outside around the time it got dark, and heard something large crashing through the woods across the back road from us. He got his butt inside fast 😂.
He knows there's black bears in the woods, but I think be believes me now, that they can show up anywhere. 😮
We do see plenty of wildlife here, but the deer who come down to feed in the fields and drink at the streams aside the road are usually very quiet, especially when approaching human residences. I don't think it was a deer.
We got to see our first gray fox hunting last year around this time or early summer. It was dark and my son spotted it from our porch and said, "What's that ?" I said, "It's probably a cat" and he said, "No, I don't think so". We got a bright light and sure enough it was a gray fox. I've seen a few red ones, even had a bobcat run across the road in front of me awhile back, on a road that goes over a ridge of the foothills of the Appalachians. But that was the first gray fox I've seen.
I love feeding my birds and small critters who come to eat the seeds and nuts that fall. But if I ever get a bear I will take them down until it moves away. My dad in a town about 15 min away, had black bears at his bird feeders, they destroyed them so he took them down for awhile til it moved on. He and his neighbors had bears at their feeders. They live right across the road from the woods too.
It pays to stay alert around black bear country for sure. I hope we get to hear your story, my older son has ADD/ADHD so I understand, when the time is right for you. 😊

Bear should only be permitted to live in areas that are not residential. Locally they have become common because of FWC wildlife commission is protecting them.
Residential areas have food and that is what attracts bears.

I believe there is responsibility on both sides of this argument. We live in a highly forested area in Washington State and we have had Black Bears in our rather extensive yard…. beautiful to look at but huge caution and awareness is required but normally they do not as a consider you as food .
However, in Northern Washington, the Government is planning on releasing Grizzlies back into the wild. With Grizzlies, you are definitely on the menu and most likely we would not survive a Grizzly attack. The problem being, due to the huge forested areas in Washington State, the Grizzly Bear population could easily make it down to the highly populated residential areas in Southern Washington. On one hand, we can learn to deal with the Black Bear population but on the other, the reintroduction of the Grizzly Bear population will surely leak into the highly populated areas of the State. This is a disaster waiting to happen and it will eventually happen !

I know for fact that both wounded rabbits and scared bear cubs both sound EXACTLY like babies/toddlers screaming. It's that bone-chilling screaming. Kids playing and screaming would sound much the same. The screams and cries of young children has been known to even trigger dog attacks. It's just natural instinct, the "prey drive". Best to have dogs with very low prey-drive around children. Breeds used for hunting large game will have a high prey-drive, even a few of the smaller game breeds (ie: Terriers, Dachshunds), used for rabbit, badger, rat, hunting, etc., would also have a higher prey-drive.

Children are naturally attracted to bears.
Bears love the taste of children.
    It's a symbiotic relationship
    The bear depends on children
    For a meal.
    Sometimes a picnic basket.
The children depends on a bear for
    An exhibit at the zoo
Also for ball balancing at the circus
The bears fur is soft and warm
    It provides warmth and comfort
For the Manny parasites inhabiting it.
And it will also eat acorns.
    This does anger the squirrels.
Perhaps a cat would be better

    They are wild animals too.
    It's the circle of life🦁

A female bear with cubs, drop to the ground, fetal position covering my neck and head.
A bear cub can be startled, and call its mother, who will attack.
When people do the wrong thing around bears, they make themselves prey.
That's not a bears fault. They are animals. People have the knowledge to know what not to do around bears. Children should be taught.

I have seen black bears digging in trash for food but never of them attacking humans unless the bear is being teased by a person then I know they will attack the human at a dump site. It is not the human that pays the price but the bear is put down. The human should know better, he will never learn.

It was a female, might have had cubs near by, that the main time females attack to protect cubs. Because she didn’t see the kids as a food source, because if she did the mother of the children wouldn’t have scared her away, she’d attack. I agree either cubs or the kids got to close being curious, bear felt threatened and attacked

I don't understand why anyone would to live with potentially dangerous wild animals especially with kids evolved. its just to dangerous and not worth it at my family's expense. On the other if this is what you grew up around I can understand why you have no fear.

Who might be smart enough to allow any bear to mingle or be in the vicinity of any human? They are unpredictable creatures and seem to have no qualms whatsoever about killing somebody in a most gruesome way. It's hard for me to understand why this isn't plain as day. Perhaps there can be sections of land for bears only where humans are prohibited from entering, and traps must be set in human areas to euthanize bears that enter people zones. Bears are smart and could learn from this.

People want to move far away from the city, this is what they get. I live just outside Philadelphia. It isn't the wild animals that I worry about, but the wild humans.

If you can't or won't keep your kids in the yard then put them on a leash and teach them how to bark. Now a friend of Smokey is gone.

This is out near me, we are in black bear country and prob with PA is they are developing all over so what is wildlife supposed to do. There are no bear in Philadelphia but Luzerne County is a good 2 hrs from there. Also near Poconos mountains which is full of tourist and resorts, people do not respect wildlife and leave food everywhere. I think people are the problem in PA they need to respect wildlife and understand we are in their territory. Carry bear spray, parents need to watch their kids. I would never leave children playing on my property alone. I would be with them along with my bear spray.

I do believe humans are encroaching on Bear populations and I'm not sure what the answer is. I feel for the Sow Bear because the children couldve been killed easily however this was too close for comfort. Maybe in areas where new subdivisions are pushing into Bear areas should be sorounded by a 10ft steel fence to make sure that children/Humans are safe along with Bears also. Extra cost to Real Estate Co but its worth it.
