    You are the man! Thank you for giving us a good look at this QRP Xceiver. It is early indeed and Xiegu does not disappoint in that some things are not defined or missing. The radio does have some quirks as well and that internal noise thing was BAD! It sounded like feedback in the receiver or something. Wow. And output audio needs tweeking and some control over that. Probably Heil has that covered. Anyway thank your for the video!

    Appreciate the amount of time and effort you placed into this overview, Sean. For POTA/SOTA ops strictly using CW, I’ll acknowledge this radio presents some merit. Otherwise, as others on this thread have noted, there are too many limitations at this price point to find serious appeal here, especially when alternatives like the G90 offer far greater capability at only a slightly higher sales price (or, as you noted, a used example at roughly the same sales price). Thanks again !

    Once they announced the price I was out. I get that its a qrp rig... (I have three...) but the price for whats offered just isnt there for me. There are other radios that offer significantly more for just a bit more in price. I see 891s for 500 all the time. there are qrp rigs at the 5-600 dollar range that i believe offer more. I see some comments saying this is for people looking to get into HF. ..... PLEASE DONT. your frustration will kill your interest in my experience. I tried to go low cost hf to begin with and it was a disaster.

    Dude, unfortunately gut first impressions of product announcements are spot on. This is one of those times. Thanks for the hands-on confirmation. In other Xiegu news, they’ve announced a new connection box for the G90 et al rigs with the XPA125B.

    So far, I'm enjoying mine. Like many have said though, if you're not into QRP don't buy as your first, second or third radio until you have mastered the techniques of QRP.
    Most of what I do is digital from PSK31, FT8, SSTV, Olivia, at al and am really amazed how well it works with the DE19 interface. NOTE: As of now, you really have to remember to select iCOM 7000 in your communications program to make it work on digital.

    2:45 Interesting about the power cable shielding. The thin double shielded one on my G90 wore through the positive after 11 months on the desk, like an inch from the radio.
    Perhaps the weight of the ferrite helped where it bends and it might hang off the desk edge. I think it felt like thin like silicone etc.

    Hi, thanks for the review. I have experience with the Xiegu G-1m 4 band 5 w. qrp transceiver. The G-106 is really just a 9 band version of the G-1m(same firmware, display, and buttons)! For me the big advantage of the G-1m and probably G-106 is size and weight, a lot smaller and lighter than G-90 easy to pack. If you use resonant antenna, it does what you need, particularly for CW where 5 watts is adequate. One problem I have had with G1-m that may also affect G-106 is there are no bandpass filters which makes overload from AM broadcast an issue. For the G-1m, I installed a small broadcast filter (there is room in the G-1m case). Time will tell if this is a problem with G-106. Thanks again. John N0JT

    Dude, I also suck at CW, but the difference between Iambic A and B relates to the last dit or dah sent. Iambic A finishes as soon as you release the pads, Iambic B ends always with a dit.

    • @KD0RC
      @KD0RC 2 роки тому

      Close... Iambic B leaves with the opposite element of the last one sent. It is all about release timing. To fully understand the difference, send a 'C' at 5 WPM in each mode. If you are in B and have the dot key engaged when you start the last dash, then release the dot and the dash, you will get a trailing dot. In mode A, the dot paddle has to be engaged at the time the dot starts or you don't get the last dot.
      Note that if you are in mode B, but key it the way you would in mode A, it will work like mode A and you won't hear any difference. Do this test at 5 WPM so that you have time to discern the difference.

    Sure you aren't confusing "shield" with "sheath"? The cable you're showing has a sheath - an insulation layer - around the inner (presumably positive) conductor; it uses the braided shield as the other conductor. The risk is that if the sheath - not the shield - were to break then the inner conductor could short to the outer shield. That's another reason for your excellent recommendation of a fused cable insert - thanks.
    Those two manufacturing decisions alone would stop me from ever taking this thing seriously. In a fairly expensive piece of kit they're pure penny-pinching.

    • @HAMRADIODUDE
      @HAMRADIODUDE  2 роки тому

      Thank you! That sounds more reasonable. "The sheath for the inner conductor" would be a good way to say it? Yes, the center conductor is positive, if I recall correctly. Hard to take the radio seriously. Thanks for the suggestion/comment.

  • @W4BIN
    @W4BIN 2 роки тому

    Iambic keyer modes A & B are different in one subtle area. It is in regard of how some characters are finished. (all Japanese radios are only type "B") The difference is reveled when you send the character. "C" Type "B" self completes the dash (not long) and type "A" does not. Anyone that can send at 20 or more wpm that is accustomed to type "B" cannot
    send a "C" properly with a type "A" keyer. Type "B" is preferred by higher speed operators.
    They are not called short and long, they are called dots and dashes. Ron W4BIN

    Great show of a new product. This might be a good contender for those on low budget that want to get in HF.
    Still a great show of a new product. It has been made clear that my opinion of what might be a good contender for those on a low budget (that don’t mind dealing with potential issues or challenges) that want to get into HF, was initially inadequately worded and completely false.
    I do appreciate the community reaching out to correct me in an effort to prevent others from potentially dealing with frustration.
    So to change my comment to better reflect what might be more acceptable…
    It’s a crap product that is cheaper than most other things to get initially and if you don’t like to be challenged and just want to wait to save up the extra few bucks for possibly less frustration, move along. However, if you are a junkie for things that are cheap and challenge you, then this MIGHT be a good contender for you.

Used 891s, 450ds, used 7300s would be a better use of cash imo. 100 watts really helps when you are new. And there are better qrp rigs if you want that, though they do cost substantially more.

    It is ready to rock, looks wise. Dummy loads are overrated, and in line with an swr meter, all kinds of not actual radiating happening, and alot of options for it to return through ground. Needs to be on air with legit antenna. A not calibration, during every transmission activated swr meter is needed. AM transmission denied is them clearly stating it is not a hackable ham rig.
    It just needs an SWR Meter, and maybe a kickstand to angle radio face up. An external, 5 or 6 led, no calibration swr meter would go great with this, but does not exist. Swr meters are always bulky, and designed to be looked at from 20 feet away. They could release a batch without special order, and under 5 watt triggered autotuner, and swr with impedence and wattage on the display to make a solid combo of stuff they make already.
