Tell your brother, C , Em, and Am. Will work fine for what you're doing, the key is C major! On his guitar your bro went C major to B major, although B is in the key of C major it's diminished so vocals would be fine but the chord is off hence why you said "Is your guitar out of tune", was the right idea though and you guys did well.
