Thanks for this guide. I just upgraded my base model 27” 2019 iMac to an i9-9900k, 2TB Fledging SSD and 64GB RAM. I was hesitant to replace the thermal paste on the VRAM, rather than re-using what was there because it was very thick, but I applied a thick layer of NT-H2 thermal compound (thicker than I would apply to a PC) to the GPU, GPU and VRAM. Apple had tons of paste on there from the factory, so I figured I’d do the same.
There were no problems upgrading from the i5-8500 to i9? Some people said they thought you couldn’t since the base has an 8th gen i5 and then i9 is a 9th gen

Mate, thanks! Your video was instrumental in getting this done... Just got my 2019 27inch iMac upgraded from i5 8500 to i9 9900 (non k) and 1TB Firecuda 520 nvme ssd. I am getting drive speeds (R/W) of about 2800 - 3100 MB/s, quite good but far away from the promised 5000 MB/s of this drive. Learnt heaps in the process and got a few adrenaline rushes... Guys (we are all guys aren't we?) ... why do we have to undergo so much pain? ;-) Cheers

2TB sounds find so long as it’s the right type (which I assume is SATA). If you find out the chipset you’re motherboard uses, you can find out which CPUs are supported. The 2019 for example used Q370 and with some research it says “8th and 9th generation Intel Core CPUs (LGA 1154).” So that means the Intel Core i9-9900K is the best CPU for that era. They’re already on their 10th generation and your’s will probably be the 5th generation. I hope that helps!
Couple questions. Was this the base model 2019? What did the NVMe SSD replace? The patriot replaced the Fusion drive (I'm assuming), and I'm confused now. Unless the Fusion drive is actually the HDD AND that stick you pulled off? Is that the "Fusion" part? I guess I just assumed they had created a drive with both inside one enclosure. Great video!

EnterBox I used iStat Menus to look at all 3 GPU temperature sensors, I assume that if the VRAM is running too hot, one of the nearby GPU sensors will warm up more than it should. Also I have noticed that running Cinebench R20 will manually set 100% fans through iStat Menus, my temperatures stay around 80C but my power consumption will jump to 115W then quickly drop down and stabilize at 80W,. However, other tests I’ve seen on iMacs built with the 9900K from the factory cycle between 115W, 80W, 115W, 80W, repeatedly. What are your Cinebench R20 and Geekbench 5 scores? My Cinebench is 3,950 and Geekbench is 1,275 single core and 7,700 multi core. The Cinebench numbers look fine, but it should get around 8,300 multi core though, 7,700 seems pretty low.
EnterBox I think the iMacs that are built with with i5-8500 from the factory have a power limit than ones that are built with the 9900K. So when you replace an 8500 with a 9900K, you have more cores but the CPU will not use very much power. Does this sound accurate based on your experience? Keep in mind i am running these tests within a couple hours of reinstalling macOS, so perhaps my multi core performance will improve later, but based on the 80W maximum sustained load wattage I suspect it is a power limitation issue

@@galeelraglen For that year I just know that the i7-7700 was the best you could get and was offered on the highest end iMac of that year. Since all iMac's of the same size use the same motherboard you can deduce what will work and what won't. Sure enough, if you follow that rule, it works!

@@galeelraglen That's exactly it! And the constraint actually due to the Intel chipset on the motherboard, rather than anything else. The chipset dictates the RAM speed, the peripherals through the "southbridge" (thunderbolt, wifi, ethernet, bluetooth, usb 3/3.1, etc.).

No, different motherboards, the best CPU your iMac can take is the i7-6700k

yes this is the base model as this has the 15-8600 which is only available in the base model

@@galeelraglen For that year I just know that the i7-7700 was the best you could get and was offered on the highest end iMac of that year. Since all iMac's of the same size use the same motherboard you can deduce what will work and what won't. Sure enough, if you follow that rule, it works!

@@galeelraglen That's exactly it! And the constraint actually due to the Intel chipset on the motherboard, rather than anything else. The chipset dictates the RAM speed, the peripherals through the "southbridge" (thunderbolt, wifi, ethernet, bluetooth, usb 3/3.1, etc.).

He cut the double-sided tape that bonds the screen to the aluminum iMac frame. Basically these screens are 'taped' in to the frame.
