Su's voice "...is like frosting over a big layer cake of metal sounds."
This is one of the best descriptions of Su's voice in Babymetal that I have ever heard. This is the difficulty anyone would have in trying to duplicate Babymetal's sound. Her voice is so rarely suited to both compliment and rise over the harsh metal sounds without being operatic. Wonderful analysis. Thank you! 🤘🦊🦊🦊🤘

I agree, she hit the nail in the head!! Overall, one of the best analytical reactions to Babymetal I've EVER seen. Everything she said about Su was spot on, and she even spotted and appreciated the "fun" element!

you talk about confidence. she has been known to take a nap before she goes out on stage. that is confidence, not nervous. she has awesome crowd control. and FYI Babymetal created kawaii metal which means cute metal. she is one of the top lead singers, male or female. on stage she is a queen. off stage she is shy and normal. for a girl basically 5 feet tall she is just awesome to watch and to experience in person is a joy.

Her acoustic version of this song, titled "Akatsuki (Unfinished Ver.)", where Su-metal sings with just a piano and I think some violins, is amazingly beautiful, and is known to make grown metalheads come to tears!

The unfinished version of Akatsuki is an important part of BabyMetal lore. The Fox God has revealed to Su on the day after her 16th birthday, that her destiny is to sacrifice her teen idol life so that she can be reborn as a Metal Goddess to lead the Metal Resistance. Su sings the song as a lament, a goodbye to the life she loves. Su sells it with a real tear.
The song that follows is BabyMetal Death.

The entire concept of Babymetal was created around her back in 2010, when she was 12, because even then, her talent and stage presence was obvious to their producer after he saw her performing in a J-Pop group when she was 10. This performance was actually from 2014, so Su-metal is going to be 23 this year.
A great solo performance I would recommend from more recent times is No Rain, No Rainbow from her 20th birthday concert - ua-cam.com/video/pDgqo6fcliY/v-deo.html It's simply a beautiful performance, and not really a metal song, more of a rock ballad style song, so she really gets to carry the song with her voice.
I would also recommend a song called Rondo of Nightmare - ua-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/v-deo.html It's a heavier, darker song, and from this same Budokan concert series in 2014.

That's our Queen Su-Metal , the stage is her playground and we the fans are her guardians.
this is nothing compare their other songs , 90% Babymetal songs are require a lot of movement. even today me still can't understand how she do that , dancing and jumping around on stage without messing her singing.

Good reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. This performance was actually in March 2014 at the Budokan in Tokyo - a very prestigious venue. BABYMETAL are still the youngest female bad to headline there and they sold it out two nights running. They are currently aged 22 and 21.
You hit on one of Su-metal's solo songs (she is the lead vocalist and the whole idea and concept for BABYMETAL is based around and only exists because of her talents) The other two girls - Yuimetal and Moametal - provide backing vocals, harmonies and do most of the dancing - obviously you haven't seen them yet. They are more than just dancers - their role is key to what makes BABYMETAL unique. Su-metal rules the stage, Yuimetal and Moametal get the audience involved, they lead chants, when they sing the audience sing along to their parts, when they jump or make a particular move so does the audience.
The backing band are the Kami Band (Kami means god or spirit, so they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned - there is a lot of lore in what they do - to support BABYMETAL in all their live shows and they always used to wear the traditional burial robes and corpse face paint). More recently the robes are plack and the face paint has been replaced with masks - the fans for the most part do not like the masks, they like to see their expressions and that they are having a really good time too.
BABYMETAL formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin. SG had a school theme and was for about a dozen girls aged 10 to 15. As part of the school theme there were sub-units like after school clubs (cooking, tennis, science, baton etc) and as well as the main group's songs and dances the sub-units, with three or so of the girls in each one, would get their own themed songs and dances that they would perform at the Sakura Gakuin shows and Idol festivals.
One of the producers, Kei Kobayashi, was a life long metalhead, more used to working with bands, but J-pop Idol music was creating a bit of a monopoly of music in Japan and getting the vast majority of the air time on TV and radio, so to make a living he was working in the kids division with the Amuse Talent Agency who formed Sakura Gakuin.
Kobayashi had noticed a girl, Suzuka Nakamoto, a year or two earlier singing with her previous J-pop trio (Karen Girl's) and was struck by her unusually loud, powerful and full on no holds barred singing style and had the thought she would be wasted in pop and could even front a metal band ... she was only 10 at that time.
Suzuka joined Sakura Gakuin as a founder member along with one of her friends from the J-pop trio as that group ended when the anime they sang the songs for ended its run. Kobayashi proposed another sub-unit to be led by Suzuka - the Heavy Music Club - a fusion of metal with the J-pop style vocals and aesthetics. Amuse were not impressed with his idea - Sakura Gakuin was aimed at coaching the girls in all sorts of entertainment skills so they could go on after graduating when they were 15 to further their careers in their chosen field, but they still wanted to make a little money from the sale of records and so on and, given that the audience for metal in Japan at that time was shrinking, there was no real potential for a heavy music club to either make any money or to progress the girls any further.
However, under the umbrella of Sakura Gakuin, Amuse allowed Kobayashi his pet project - they thought he was mad, but they provided no extra budget (the money went to the more commercially viable sub-units) so there was no real risk involved. So Kobayashi asked Su to lead the sub-unit and the two youngest and smallest girls in Sakura Gakuin - Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi - to be her support. Their roles were defined as vocal and dance (Suzuka) scream and dance (Yui and Moa). At that time, in 2010, Su was 12, Yui and Moa are 18 months younger and were 11. They would perform under the name BABYMETAL - a pun based on the spelling in Japanese characters and pronunciation being virtually identical to Heavy Metal and it also indicated the birth of a new metal genre which they called Kawaii Metal (cute metal). Suzuka became Su-metal, Yui and Moa became Yuimetal and Moametal.
Against all expectations BABYMETAL started to grow in popularity and to gain their own fans and audience - even more than the other sub-units. It was decided that when Su was due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin after her 15th birthday BABYMETAL should separate from Sakura Gakuin to become an independent band in their own right. Up until then they had performed with a backing track and in a couple of small shows of their own they had a fake band dressed in skeleton suits and miming the instruments on stage with them - they were called Babybones. As part of the preparation for the split a live band was phased in playing at a couple of festivals and the encores in a couple of shows - they were the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians.
The separation was completed at the end of 2013 at a show called Legend 1997, the day after Su's 16th birthday (she was born in 1997). The Kami Band played the last 5 songs in that show and, starting with the shows at the Budokan, early in 2014 became the full time support for all live shows ... they have been with them ever since.
The Kami Band has core members, but they all have their own bands and projects so there are others who might step in depending on availability. In 2019 for the US tour and the European tour in 2020 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and supported BABYMETAL throughout those tours ... this was probably because (in part at least) these were the most extensive tours so far so the Kami Band of the East had some clashes in their own schedules that made being on tour for so long either very difficult or impractical.
In 2014 BABYMETAL's video for their song 'Gimme Chocolate' went viral just before they embarked on their first 'world' tour - their first venture outside of Asia (this was just after the Budokan shows where 'Akatsuki' was filmed). As a result they were moved from a small side stage or tent where they had been booked to play at Sonisphere festival in the UK and they were to open the main stage on the Saturday morning instead.
This was pretty much make or break - they took to the stage to be faced by about 55,000 UK metalheads, most of whom had never heard of them (plus a few who had threatened to throw bottles at this 'gimmick' band) and a few hundred of their own fans. They played 5 songs and left the crowd calling for more - their merch outsold all the other bands playing that weekend (there were big names among them like Iron Maiden and Metallica). Try 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' live at Sonisphere 2014 for your next reaction, it was the closing number from their set.
BABYMETAL have not looked back ever since, touring the world every year since then, winning over 20 of the 30+ awards they have been nominated for. They became the first Japanese band to headline Wembley Arena, they sold out the Tokyo Dome (55,000 people) two nights running and their third album was the first by any Asian band to hit number 1 in the Billboard Hard Rock charts.
Sadly Yui left the band in October 2018 for undisclosed health reasons - her last show was in October 2017. Su and Moa have continued as a duo and are supported by any one of 3 girls (the Avengers - Kano, Riho and Momoko) dancing in the third spot. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary today (10th October).
Apologies for the wall of text, but you did ask for some information about them.

Yep Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) is incredible, not only as a singer but as a performer, because she was trained to be an actress. She was 16 here (this was 2014) but she had already been on stages for already close to ten years, and she had a national hit while in a children's band when she was younger. And has not stopped to improve her skills to this day.
Yep if Babymetal has some gimmick as some people say, it's not the girls, but the dissonance that creates between the dark metal and the joyful girls, and it merges so well and creates a really heartwarming feeling when everything meshes together.
Actually the band is not only her, she is usually accompanied by two dancers, but she has some solo songs like this one where her voice gets more protagonism. So for you it was a great start with the band. More solo songs from Su are : Rondo of Nightmare (pretty dark song), Amore (classic power metal) and No Rain, No Rainbow (a metal ballad).
But maybe you want to meet some of the more bread and butter stuff of the band with the three girls in, then you could watch songs like Megitsune, Headbanger or Road of Resistance, that are kinda classic metal.
Or some of their more poppy and mainstream metal music: Pa Pa Ya, Gimme Chocolate...
If you continue to delve into the fox hole (how fans call the people that get engaged with the band), you'll see that even inside the metal genre, they are not tied to any subgenre. Every song is pretty different from each other.
Thank you for the video, really interesting, hope you continue to do some Babymetal from time to time.

BABYMETAL is based on a fusion of JPop/Idol with Metal, so it's fine to acknowledge the Pop element.
That's one of the things that make them so interesting.
Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or just Su) is the lead singer and was featured in that solo song.
BABYMETAL's producer Koba, a long time Metal fan, became aware of this promising young singer in the Amuse, Inc. Kid's division when she was 10 years old.
At that time she was in the JPop trio Karen Girl's.
He was impressed with her "no-holds-back" singing, and began to wonder what would happen if she was backed with Metal music.
Which was either a crazy or genius idea. I lean towards the latter.
2016 may have been when that video of 'Akatsuki' was uploaded, but the Budokan Black Night performance it's clipped from was March 2nd, 2014.
Su was 16 then. She's 22 now, 23 in December.
I'd love to see your reaction to 'Rondo of Nightmare' from that same concert:
This Black Night Budokan performance is legendary: ua-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/v-deo.html

BABYMETAL are all about the contrast. I agree with you that Su‘s voice sits nicely on the Metal groundwork, and I think the combination brings a breath of fresh air into Metal. Many of their songs are more playful than this one, incorporating more poppy tunes and influences from other genres as well. Furthermore, this is one of a few Su solos, usually there are two backing vocalists and dancers accompanying her, which also adds to the playful and fun atmosphere.

The singer, Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal), had been in the entertainment industry for about 10 years by the time Babymetal performed at this show. She was model, took acting classes, and sang professionally at age 10 in a J-Pop group called Karen Girl's for about a year. She joined another J-Pop group called Sakura Gakuin, that is also a school for girls who want careers in the entertainment industry. Babymetal was a sub-unit, like an after school club, in SG. By the time she graduated from there at age 15, Babymetal had already amassed a large following, so she stayed in the club, and shortly afterwards it became it's own separate group.
Now, 10 years later, Babymetal have had several world tours, three albums(the last of which debuted in the Billboard top 40, the first Japanese band to do that in over 50 years), won numerous awards around the world, and toured with some of the biggest rock/metal bands on the planet. They are the real deal.
I hope you'll check out more of their performances, especially the live performances where Su really shines. This small, cute, Japanese girl totally commands these huge crowds at concerts, better than a lot of performers many years, or decades her senior. It's just a treat to behold.

SG is an idol group. The school thing is their gimmick. If you want to give credit to a school (which i don't think you really should) then it should be the Acting School of Hiroshima not Sakura Gakuin. SG only pretended to be a school when the cameras were on. ASH was a real school for performers that Su went to full time.

One thing you might want to add Kitsune Sama is that the band was actually formed around Su-metal. When she was discovered by Kobametal, he felt her voice was too powerful to be used as a jpop singer, so he decided to create an experimental Jpop/metal type band with her as the lead vocalist. Thus Babymetal was formed with her as the nucleus.

This is more a visual treat and solo type performance for me. Kimi Anime, Syncopation, even current buzz Kingslayer make me realize how unreal that voice cuts through Marshall amps driven by guitars equiped with double-coil "hum-bucker" pickups further occupying the sonic space with compression and saturation. LoL (Everyone knows this, but anyway: Guitar and vocal compete for same hz, bass and drum can be complimentary; different hz, different sonic space).
She was asked to sing in class one day and even on video audio I could tell it was loud. With the other girls close by actions too I could tell it was loud. LoL! I understand Suzuka practices singing on treadmill (not exclusively I'm sure).

Great reaction, it was Su-Metal there doing one of her solos, one thing you need to know that BabyMetal consist 3 girls, and they includes dancing choreographies in it. The other 2 girls were resting while Su-Metal doing the solos in this video, they deserve the rest as the 2 girls (Yui-Metal and Moa-Metal) mainly do the scream and dancing,

      @mudshark351 3 роки тому +2

@@VocalSplendorStudios A great song for you to watch would be this: ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html It's the last song of the show where they really got their big break, the 2014 Sonisphere Festival in the UK. They were supposed to play on one of the small stages with an audience of about 3000 people but at the last minute were put on the main stage with about 60,000 people waiting to see true established metal bands like Iron Maiden, Anthrax etc. The girls were scared to death but the crowd loved them and they turned out to be the number one sellers of merchandise at the event.
Another interesting thing is that the girls and the band do not really have much input in the songs. I equate them to the concept of Trans Siberian Orchestra where Paul O'Neil is the mastermind and responsible for everything. The mastermind of Babymetal is Kei Kobayashi and he is responsible for the writing of the songs and the whole concept and show. An interesting note to that is that in the beginning (2010 -2013) they played with no band, and then progressed to a "fake" band who just acted like they were playing because basically there was not a lot of money to be spent on them. When the studio musicians who actually played the music (who are called the Kami Band) started to play live on stage with them in 2013 is when people really started to take them seriously. Basically because these serious musicians were putting their reputations on the line and it made people take notice.

Yeah, i think you're exactly right. Su is a very good singer but it's her performance that really sets her apart. She's fine on the albums but she really shines in live performances. You should check out their very first single 'Doki Doki Morning'. It's not much to react to vocally but it has all 3 of the girls and they are super young and cute. This song only had Su but there are 3 girls in Babymetal. And something recent. I'd recommend 'No Rain No Rainbow' it's a ballad that Su performs solo on her 20th birthday. The official live version. Or any single off the new album. Papaya or elevator girl or da da dance whatever.
She sounds a lot better in her solo songs because there isn't dance choreography. In the songs with all 3 girls she dances a lot and it's tough for her to sing quite as well as the solo songs. And the songs where she dances the vocals are designed to be sung while dancing. Su is the lead singer and the other 2 girls Moa and Yui do most of the dancing and crowd interaction and supporting vocals. Some of their songs are way cuter and more poppy than Akatsuki.

But they didn't write it. It's only a song:) ua-cam.com/video/gcFb--b6vGE/v-deo.html It's with only the two other girls who weren't in the video you watched and they aren't really singing live but it's super cute and they're dancing their butts off.

You can say it - "popish." Babymetal basically created their own sub-genre of metal that fuses metal and J-Pop. They call it Kawaii metal, or cute metal in English.
Su-Metal's voice has definitely matured in the 10 years Babymetal has been around (Su-Metal was 12 when they began). Singing vibrato and operatic isn't the style she uses (thankfully...one of the things I hate about Western pop music is all the overly unnecessary vocal "decorations" all over everything - even simple Christmas songs are ruined with pop stars feeling the need to throw in tons of unnecessary scaling and vibrato that ruins the simple beauty of these songs.) She uses strength of projection and clear tones to elevate her voice above the pounding riffs, which I think suits the sound of this band very well. Babymetal does however have songs where Su really shines. I would suggest "Brand New Day" for example - a simple but amazing vocal performance.
As for the story behind this band....there is A LOT of it - they have a very interesting and storied career. I'll let other fans fill you in though since this comment is already getting long.

I love your comparison of the layers and varied themes of their show. One thing I never really thought about is how Suzuka has to kind of compete with the band. As in...she is singing with the sound of 4 grown men that are all highly experienced professional musicians with top tier equipment and skill...most 16 year olds would get swallowed up by that level of production and sound behind them but Su manages to not only match it but do it without seeming like she is having to push to do so. A lot of teenagers can have similar singing talent as Su but would get overwhelmed by the scenario and fail to sing at their actual potential, but she does it like its no big deal.

What might be a very interesting topic is how the human and especially female body changes when it comes to singing, because Suzuka/Su-metal has been singing some of the same songs for all this time from her very early teens (12 ! in 2010 for their very first song) all the way to in her 20s now. Because I'm pretty certain she had to relearn how to perform the same songs so they don't sound all that different even though her 'vocal instrument' has changed.

Su is so intense on stage. Her choreagropher says "Su is crazy. She l;earns the steps by intuition. She feels the music." Her death stare is a trademark. It's not an act. Su talks about meeting her other self on stage, the persona is so different than her personality, which is kind of goofy. This was in fact a struggle for her until she met Metallica, who showed her how to seperate on stage and off stage personalities.
For Su you would have to check out different songs as she can do many styles. No Rain No Rainbow, Legend S from 2018 for a more pop/rock sound, Shanti Shanti Shanti is a recent song with South Asian influences, and BxMxC. Rondo of Nightmare is another good choice, but it's from the same concert, which was 2014. Karate from Download Festival 2016 is another good choice, shows some of her physicality.
I have seen many concerts in my life, and there aren't many bands who have as much fun on stage as Babymetal. Their joy in musc comes through.

Akatsuki is so fun to follow just this one song because SU's singing style and voice changes with age.
I especially like about 15-7 years old. But of course I like the voice and the way he sings now. I also recommend these areas on UA-cam.
Only the "LEGEND 1997" one in particular is a ballad song.

akatsuki is written as 紅月. The meaning is the red moon.
    紅(aka) = Bright red.
    月(tsuki)= moon
The Japanese lyrics are made up of just a few old words, so the nuances may be a little off if translated directly into English.
I hope you continue to enjoy your BABYMETAL.

I know it will sound like blasphemy to many ... but Suzuka's ability to sing and command any crowd actually really reminds me of Freddie Mercury. I have high hopes for her in the future.

Suzuka Nakamoto’s remarkable voice started emerging in the fall of 2007. It’s been emerging since and getting better ever since. Other solos include The One, Amore, and Arcadia. Amore is totally deferent than the older song of the same name. She also performs with to younger girls songs like Yava, Awadama Feve, and Catch Me if You Can. Recently, she did a rap battle version of BxMxC. Probably the most remarkable thing about Miss Nakamoto is her ability to sing while dancing energetically.

The One and Arkadia have the trio formation though, only Su solos are Akatsuki, Rondo Of Nightmare, Amore and No Rain No Rainbow

I really recommend No Rain No Rainbow from Babymetal. Is is CRIMINALLY undervalued from reactors and really shows off her singing ability.
I suggest Rondo of Nightmares (with mischief of gods intro) if you like to hear more of the band AND singing her in kind of a different place.
I suggest Road of Resistance as the most popular (and most epic) performance.
Really enjoy your reactions! thank you!
Edit: Oh right and if you just want to laugh and have fun Give Me Chocolate! How could I forget

Thanks! You should react to their song - No Rain No Rainbow from Legend S. She was 20 in that performance, it would be fun to hear a professional opinion of the way her voice changed as she transitioned from a kid to a young adult.

One thing Japan has that we do NOT is network of "band factories" think school of rock but each one for one band.
