This past April, my mother passed away from alcohol related issues.
We are, Apache Native Americans, so alcoholism runs in our families.
It was such a horrible process to see what she went through but sadly she was never able to stop despite doctors telling her numerous times. It had even caused her to lose a couple of really good jobs.
I like a good drink every once in a while, but I use her as an example to not let it control me.

The vast damage that alcohol causes is so substantial, its crazy how culturally ingrained it is.

Hey, I've been sober for 6 months after being a high functioning alcoholic for 20+ years (the kind where no-one questions your drinking because you can hold down a job and keep your appointments, etc).
After living in fear of never having enough booze for decades I just got to the point where the negatives vastly outweighed any perceived benefit.
Quitting can be a tough road, but so far it has totally been worth it.

As a recovering alcoholic that started drinking since 15 (34 now) alcohol has never brought me anything good in my life and it was a constant struggle to leave since I was always chasing that first time high. Im lucky to not of hurt anybody and not of end up dead through all the stupid things ive gone thru because of alcohol. Its just straight up poison in my eyes and many horrible things have been linked to it (fatal accidents, domestic violence, child abuse, assault, liver disease, cancer... list goes on). I was an alcoholic throughout my 20's and early 30's, and my life was an absolute wreck. My house was filthy, I was driving drunk, buying entire bottles of wine/liquor or huge packs of beer after work. I'd even plan out my evening to make the buzz last all night. It was pathetic. I finally hit rock bottom when my rental sold out from under me and I was faced with cleaning it out. It was horrific, and I couldn't believe how I let it get that bad. Bottles and trash everywhere. I looked in the mirror and I was toeing the scale at nearly 200lbs from all the booze and junk food. I didn't recognize myself. I managed to quit cold turkey then and there, even though it was extremely rough. I just took it one day at a time, and forgave myself for days where I slipped up and had a drink. I've been completely sober for 3 years now, and after joining a gym last year, I've lost 40lbs so far! Here's to another sober, healthy year 😊

My husband lost his uncle to alcoholism.
8 years ago a friend of ours lost her soon to be ex husband to alcoholism. The reason for the divorce was his drinking. He was supposed to pick up their 6 year old daughter from school but never showed up. 2 days later his mom went to check up on him and found him dead.
If you still want to drink and are ok with all the damage it does to your body, all I can say is “it’s your body, your choice, your health. Just don’t hurt anyone in the process ie drunk driving.” My brother happens to be a private practice defense attorney who specializes in DUIs. He charges $200 an hour.

I have no bitterness though, because when as a young adult, I finally spent a few weeks with him, and after seeing what his alcoholism was like, I was grateful that I grew up not with him, but in the home I had.

Although I do occasionally drink from time to time, I tend to avoid it due to the effects not exactly being the most desirable to me. I really don’t like the feeling of being tipsy, especially when it makes me feel uncomfortably dissociated from myself. (That is the reason I don’t even dare try to drink to get drunk.) That is why when I do drink, I make sure the beverage is something tasty or enjoyable so any side effects I feel afterwards are more worth it.
