SimMaster I guess so, given that both Bill Backer and the fictional Don Draper were both born in 1926. And Mr. Backer is still with us today (89 years young)!!
When the commercial was used in the series finale of Mad Men media outlets contacted Bill Backer and asked him if he was the basis for the Don Draper character Backer told the New York Times "I'm not Don Draper"
I believe the TV commercial was directed by Scott Lloyd-Davies, who may have also directed the re-union re-make of their classic Coke TV spot. Scott is a brilliant cinematographer & director.

Bill Backer and Billy Davis were the geniuses behind it. Me, The Empress , Jim Campbell, Arlere Martell, Ronnie Dante et al, sang it for them, I believe we are owed Money for this play.
Today is the 4th of July, 2016. I was really surprised to find this video. It was an honor to know and work with Bill Backer and Billy Davis and to work with all the singers that Linda mentions above. I got into the session singer business at the end of an era and I'll forever be grateful for how they brought me into the fold. It forever changed my life.
Despite hating Coke and everything it stands for; hence, I piss myself laughing at the cynicism of Cokes "Interracial" angle. I have to say I remember being a kid in the 70's and this ad was huge! I loved it! Hell, the Ad was made in 71' and I was born 75' and I clearly recall in NZ the ad was still running when I was 3! Was that the case in America? That's how good that jingle and concept was. It defined the soft drink genre, amazing.
+SMC01ful I was born in 75 as well in PA. The ad was still running in the 80s here. I remember in the 80s Coca Cola getting busted for including cocaine in their recipe. Now they just put aspartame in it. 44 years later the world is more divided than ever.
Journey, lets just buy the world a Coke and heal it! From NZ to Pennsylvania with love ROFL. God that is some cheese right there. I think Coke got rid of the coca way earlier than the 80's... but its rather fascinating all the same.
We must never kill the messenger. Kudos for the writer of this clever jingle, he certainly was visionary, creating this outstanding musical accompaniment for America's best choice for soda. I'll never know exactly why I post shit like this on my channel, often I puzzle myself and count the empty cans, trying to see which of us is right.Which way do you turn when all that is right, is left, and whatever is left is right? Confusing is it? Bill Backer interviewed about "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke"
I was 11 when this commercial first aired! I thought it was cool, but I was too young too understand the social comment it was making at the time (end the Vietnam war, stop racism, etc)!
Reminiscing about a commercial in my youth back in the early 70's. I'm here in 2021 when Coca-Cola is telling white people to be more white. This goes against everything this Coke commericial stood for and what the original song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" message was. Mr. Backer would be appalled.
I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Backer a very long time ago. A very talented, creative man. I think of him every time I hear the tune....
RIP, Bill. Most loved commercial ever. And, nobody likes commercials!

That's true. It was beautiful
When did he die?
Wow! An executive that's actually creative. This man is a treasure.
so this guy is Don Draper?
SimMaster Yep. It's pretty clear to me at least.

SimMaster Now the media speculations begins: news.nationalpost.com/arts/television/mad-men-finale-is-bill-backer-the-real-don-draper
LGranthamsHeir I wonder if his real name is Bill Bracker? Was he in the Korean War?

I would have liked to have heard him talk more about the creative process for coming up with the commercial.
***** That's great. Thanks.
I woke up today remembering this awesome man, God be with you my friend.
LOVE LOVE LOVE -- and how great that he can still play!

thank you for bringing such.. joy into our lives.. we have not forgotten

There are Two kind of answers here: before and after Mad Men finale
When the commercial was used in the series finale of Mad Men media outlets contacted Bill Backer and asked him if he was the basis for the Don Draper character Backer told the New York Times "I'm not Don Draper"
Bill Backer and Billy Davis were the geniuses behind it.

Coke quit putting cocaine in the drink around 1900. I doubt you can remember that far back since you were born in 1975.
Here because of mad men lol
Whenever it was aired, that ad always made me smile. We could use an updated version right now.
There is a newer version. Starts out as a sort of rap.
"I'd like to buy, the world a Coke..." -Bill Backer, Billy Davis, Roger Greenaway, & Roger Cook.
With additional assistance from Don Draper hehe
The commercial is for sure the most genius commercial of all time.
We must never kill the messenger. Kudos for the writer of this clever jingle, he certainly was visionary, creating this outstanding musical accompaniment for America's best choice for soda. I'll never know exactly why I

great song ! great cm
I wish there were a rendition of Bill Backer's version of the song from this video that I could buy. Anyone know if that's a possibility?
Wish he could afford to tune his piano.
its just me or the name bill backer is similar to don draper?
Popular right now??

I was 11 when this commercial first aired! I thought it was cool, but I was too young too understand the social comment it was making at the time (end the Vietnam war, stop racism, etc)!
It wasn’t making a social comment, it was trying to sell you something you don’t need.
He is now famous, Thanks to Don Draper..
