This...this is just beautiful. For the first time in the day, I just stopped, completely. I wasn't thinking or doing, nothing. I was completely captivated by your harmonies and felt so very alive. I would truly love for you to perform this live on your Voyage tour at some point.
Edit: after listening to this on loop for the past few days, imma just say it, Nantucket officially has a competitor

You beat me to it! Specifically went looking for other versions of this song besides The Corries (who often set the gold standard for any song they performed) and was pleasantly surprised to see The Longest Johns had covered it. This is an obscure one (based on a real person, fisher and folk singer Sam Larner!) and a lot of this old folk music is slowly disappearing. The Longest Johns are doing important work introducing it to new generations.

I’ve only just discovered this song but already I love it. As a teenager growing up in the age of the internet and seeing many conflicting viewpoints, ideologies, and generally watching people fight over the smallest and most trivial of things, this harkens back to a simpler time. One where these folks just had to worry about doing their jobs, and getting back home to their loved ones. It almost, in a way, makes me nostalgic for a time that I never lived in. I really like this and Little Pot Stove for that reason.

Well put. Couldn't agree more. I'm in my mid 20s now and I feel much the same way about how our world is today and how technology impacts everyone's lives. I'm thankful we are still free to enjoy simple things... family, music, working with our hands. Be well, Nick 😊

So I grew up in a town outside of Glasgow, Scotland called Airdrie, where I still reside today at 27 years of age. Never fitted in, very negative and hateful place where people will have a go at you like for glancing near them. Cell phone zombies.
My high-school friend has recently moved to a very small coastal town/village called Carnoustie, in between Dundee and Aberdee. Place is so quiet, locals are so friendly, I've sat and shared a coffee with a couple of pentioners that live here and listened to their stories. There are still small bands of rebellious teens that are just as violent as the ones back home however this town is bliss. So simple, quiet, peaceful, first place I've truly felt at home and I don't even live here. This is my 3rd visit in 4 months to get away (I also sell some of my crafts in a board game themes cafe in dundee so they keep the shelf stocked for me when I send them my products) thinking of moving here, get away from all the negativity, continue leatherworking, wood working and take back up writing. Feel like I've finally found a my piece of heaven where I actually belong

@@theirrationalgamer8174 Wow! That is interesting. Thank you so much for sharing some of your life-story. I truly hope you are able to move, if that's at all possible. I can't imagine living in a place that made me unhappy. I live in a small town in the eastern US and I can't imagine moving, except maybe to another small (smallish) town. Different strokes for different folks of course but I can confidently say I have no interest in living in a densely populated city or an unfriendly place like you described. I truly wish you well. Thanks again for sharing. :)

@@ProfesoraNutI'm much the same way, I live in Georgia, my house sits in a little bowl at the base of a mountain in the northern part of the state. I love that I can walk out on my front porch and have mountain and forest behind me and open fields in front of me, perfect for sitting and drinking a cup of coffee while the sun comes up. Just down from the house is a creek that you can hear from the porch, no close neighbors either, can't even see another house from ours. That's my heaven.

With the nets and gear we're faring
On the wild and wasteful ocean
It's there in the deep we harvest and reap our bread
As we hunt the bonny shoals of herring
Oh, it was a fine and a pleasant day
Out of Yarmouth harbour I was faring
As a cabin boy on a sailing lugger
For to go and hunt the shoals of herring
Oh, the work was hard and the hours long
And the treatment, sure it took some bearing
There was little kindness and the kicks were many
As we hunted for the shoals of herring
Oh, we fished the Swarte and the Broken Bank
    I was cook and I'd a quarter-sharing
And I used to sleep standing on my feet
And I'd dream about the shoals of herring
Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman
You can swear and show a manly bearing
Take your turn on watch with the other fellas
While you're searching for the shoals of herring
In the stormy seas and the living gales
Just to earn your daily bread you're daring
From the Dover Straits to the Faroe Islands
As you're following the shoals of herring
Oh, I earned my keep and I paid my way
And I earned the gear that I was wearing
Sailed a million miles, caught ten million fishes
We were sailing after shoals of herring

A song written by Ewan MacColl. It's a bit of a shame that artists who have sung this song are more well known than the composer. Ewan was one of my first forays into UK traditional music. For those that aren't familiar with him, it might be worth searching out his music to see what they think. Can also recommend A.L. Lloyd. These aren't shanty singers, just old folk singers. :-)

Although both Ewan and A.L. sang shanties (wonderfully). Blow Boys Blow is an album (cd) that they did together. Highly recommend!

I think the music I had from them didn't include shanties (and I also had an album that they did together!) and I was just worried I'd send shanty fans to them and someone would be disappointed. I love you guys but Ewan MacColl is the god of the Shoals of Herring. I can’t wait to see you in May in Chicago.
