This and Glass were the last two movies that Bruce Willis was truly GREAT in. I wish nothing but the best for him now and hope his aphasia becomes more bearable.
I hope everything gets better for him. I truly feel bad for him because many people including myself thought he was coasting on easy parts or taking parts just for paycheck but never knowing what personal and physical struggle he has been going through, how hard it has been on him. Just goes to show you that you never know what someone is going through behind close doors and you don't know their truth.

I like the farm section. The film is pretty disciplined about telling its story and cutting away a lot of the world building you might expect in a sci-fi movie.
JGL might be one of the more underrated actors of the last decade or two. Premium Rush, Looper, 50/50, 500 Days of Summer, Inception, Dark Knight Rises, The Walk... Dude is legitimately fantastic.
I haven't seen that movie in a long time but I think it would be an interesting reaction from the crew if it's as good as I remember it and they haven't. seen it.

Giving me an excuse to watch it once more, thank you BW. I like how they don’t want to give too much details/depths to time travel, limits the “loopholes”. While the pace did drag at the farm and there was some things I wish it did better, I found the ending close to perfect as a way to close the movie.

No way....these guys never seen Looper? This movie is right up their alley, i figured they would've all seen it by now. Looper left a lasting impression on me...always wanted a sequel. Great movie.
When the talk moved to wishing the movie explored time travel and character interactions in greater length... Sounds like you guys need to watch the 12 Monkeys series. It's a solid four season Syfy show based on the movie. And the fourth season is written as the final season to wrap everything up, which is nice. You don't need to have seen the movie to watch the series, and ultimately, it might be better to skip the movie anyway if you're watching the series. The movie is great though too.
This is hands down the BEST movie that explores time travel for me! Highly recommend Rian Johnson's whole filmography. He tackles so many different genres with such craft and flair.
I may personally not be a huge fan of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars, but I do like his works outside of Star Wars. I’d like to see more original works from him. That said, I’m intrigued on what he has to offer for Knives Out 2.
I love Rian Johnson’s work. Brick is another favorite of mine from him. From 2005. JGL is in all his movies, whether it’s a starring role, cameo, or voice work.
I LOVE this movie. A personal favourite of mine and in my opinion really underrated. Although I do get that some people might not follow what’s going on with the time travel aspect.
Rian Johnson is actually a really good filmmaker with incredibly interesting ideas. Even if you set Star Wars movie aside, his entire body of work is strong. Looper is great, Knives Out is fantastic, The Brothers Bloom is interesting, and Brick (his debut) is actually just straight up one of my favorite films. Not to mention he's directed some of the best episodes of TV ever made. Also, I too, have been a big fan of the Kid Blue is Abe theory for a long time!
I still think The Last Jedi is one of the best Star Wars films in the franchise, however I understand why people have gripes with it given its very different tone. I maintain that I would *love* to see a Johnson directed trilogy, though one that stands on its own merits away from the Skywalker Saga. They probably shouldn't have ever had him come in to direct Episode VIII, and instead let Abrams do all of the sequel trilogy.

Lol, TLJ is filled inconsistencies and plot holes, there some convient stuff that happen to force to plot to work and even it really doesn't work. The characters and dialogue are also really awful. It was a terrible movie, Star Wars related or not.
There's a goof in the storyline of this movie, it's a paradox - in the future that bruce willis comes from, the rainmaker exists, but in bruce willis' past, he never met sarah and sid. So he didn't shoot sid in the face and he didn't kill sarah. Joseph Gordon Levitt only met sarah because he got the paper from Bruce Willis, and went to the address on the paper. So if the rainmaker existed in Bruce Willis' timeline, who originally shot sid in the face and killed sarah? because Bruce Willis was never there.
yeah it might look that way, but really with more analysis it can be determined Bruce Willis character made the Rainmaker. If he chose a different career there would be no Rainmaker or Sarah. Essentially he made his doomed reality, yet unlike movies you can change yourself to create a better future not kill yourself though it is symbolic and kind of the same thing. The BTTF trilogy does a great job of hiding the same wisdom. Doc made the clocktower, if he hadn't done that we wouldn't have the Trilogy, Doc realizes that the future is not set but it is whatever you make it.
That's known as a causal loop, and while it's easy to lump it in with other paradoxes, it technically isn't a paradox at all! The same phenomena can be seen in Interstellar.

One of the biggest things about Rian Johnson's films (Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper, The Last Jedi, Knives Out) are ALL written in a way where the way the narrative details unfold feels _totally_ different when you're rewatching them a second time. There are a lot of little hints about how information gets seeded around with Blue and others. The best part is that because Rian Johnson not only writes but he also storyboards all of his films, the shots and minor details are all intentionally set up, even if they're not fully expanded upon directly.
@@Pir-o Looper actually emphasizes a lot about why watching that film and The Last Jedi a second time are really important for Rian Johnson's movies. In both films - the most important parts of the stories are _the setting itself._ The main character is learning how to be a hero by focusing on how the seemingly unchanging parts of THAT SETTING needs to change. It also shows how only looking at their own personal suffering is just going to ensure that the cycle never changes, even though they ALL need it to. The Last Jedi builds its setting and tensions off of the same elements that inspired the original trilogy of Star Wars - war films & Japanese cinema. TLJ is especially drawing from Apocalypse Now, Twelve O'Clock High, Letter Never Sent, & Rashomon for it's story, on top of the elements Rian Johnson is already known for in the other films mentioned in my OP (with the exception of Knives Out which he made later). In Looper, (which was made before he was ever chosen to direct a Star Wars film), the whole film is using time-travel as a way to show how small events in your life can drastically reshape you decades later - both physically AND psychologically. The themes with the Rainmaker are all focused around the tiny little differences in life experience that will change the future of a kid with exceptional supernatural powers. The elements of the physical and psychological transformation all have some pretty clear links to the same changes linked to how Anakin became Darth Vader. The issues Anakin was facing as a former slave kid upon being taken from his home were; his father figure Qui-Gon dying, his brother Obi-Wan having to raise & mentor him, and his actual mother dying. On top of that, he fell in love with & married the princess who rescued him, while belonging to the Jedi Order where attachments like that are forbidden. Anakin losing the attachments to those he loved are central to his suffering in the same way that the end of Looper lays out why the Rainmaker turns into a monster. Darth Vader as a tool to preserve the Empire is just as critical as the Rainmaker creating the world of Loopers as assassins fated to murder themselves to keep that syndicate in power in the future. That's why Anakin's pain was manipulated by Palpatine into a fear of loss that blinded him to what he had become. Looper follows the same threads on the pains, losses, and lack of critical family figures that cause the Rainmaker to become a monster in the future. The key element is that it's about a cycle that locks itself into repeating, just like The First Order bringing back the Empire in The Force Awakens. Looper is all about breaking that cycle for someone ELSE rather than for yourself and so is TLJ. That's following the same themes in RotJ of Luke having to save his father Anakin rather than killing Vader OR saving himself from the Emperor. In The Last Jedi, those themes are at the core of why war profiteering fueling both sides is a conflict that causes governments to ignore the suffering of children outside of the immediate scope of either side's jurisdiction. The Old Republic wasn't helping slave kids like Anakin on worlds ruled by syndicates like the Hutts on Tatooine, and the New Republic still didn't help the slave kids on Cantonica where Canto Bight was fueled by the money from ensuring that conflict kept people looking elsewhere. Those who weren't busy with their own issues were rich enough to ignore the obvious exploitation, unaffected enough to not care, or to feel their own safety was too much to risk helping them - which is why it's up to Finn & Rose to tear down that facade that no one else will. In war OR peace, the issues that lead to the child Anakin eventually becoming Darth Vader were still unresolved in the Galaxy _regardless of who was in charge._ That's why the identity of Rey's family doesn't matter there, because she has the power to help those who need it and grew up as a deserted nobody like her, which is all that matters for WHY she needs to do something. The old Jedi Council forbidding attachments out of fear of the Dark Side is why Kylo Ren severs attachments as a means to embrace the Dark Side by refusing to care about people he loves like his parents. Ben struggles to kill Han AND his mother because his attachments are a strength to the good in him, not a weakness. Thus, Rey has to hold on to those attachments to save what matters, while also refusing to join Ben, no matter how much he desperately needs someone else. She can't let that attachment pull her to darkness, she needs to use their connection to ensure Ben isn't lost forever. That's why TLJ ends by giving that same hope of being a heroic Jedi to a slave kid through the legend of Luke Skywalker using non-violent resistance to save the people he cares about. Luke's legacy follows the same lessons Yoda taught for how he beat the Emperor - using the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER attack. That was spread throughout the Galaxy in a way that detached the Jedi from being beholden to the sterile and dogmatic approach of the Jedi Council that lead to Darth Vader. That understanding and the old texts gave Rey everything she needed to succeed in bringing hope to others by ensuring that Luke wasn't The Last Jedi. *Those are all perspectives that you don't have until you've **_already_** seen the end of the films.* That's exactly how ALL Rian Johnson's films are laid out, and why they're all not only worth watching twice, but are a VERY different experience the second time, because you know to focus on something TOTALLY different as being the most important part of the story from what you assume at the beginning.

I really enjoy how Rian Johnson designs his films' stories, that's plenty sufficient a reason to write about it. There are a lot of interesting things to discover from other people by reading & engaging with reaction channels' comments (especially the Blindwave viewers). Learning things from other people's experienced point of view is a great way to spend time and gain new perspectives that might change how you think about other things you like. I have really detailed conversations in YT comments about things like this with other people… all the time - because I take the time to write things worth reading. The type of people who DO take that time to read it are the ones who share value by making replies equally worth reading. You reap what you sow, as it were. That's why you & I have totally different experiences in what we usually get from YT comments, based solely on the comments we make and how we interact with them. You just _think_ no one reads that stuff because you don't take the time to ever try. Dismissing that experience outright by ignoring what I wrote is… only your loss not mine. That's ok though, as my previous comment is still around for anyone who wants to read it, and I made sure it's worth the time to. So, if you or anyone else who's thinking about Looper and scanning through these comments wants to discuss or learn things they didn't consider about how Rian Johnson's storytelling is laid out they can! That's a win-win situation for me, (as is the ability to casually write and post online while relaxing outside, since the weather's great!)
I like how the movie explicitly tells you not to think about the mechanics of time travel because the rules for it don't make a whole lot of sense. They won't kill the young version of a looper on the run because 'it would mess things up' but disfiguring and amputating them won't? Certainly the guy's life is going to be significantly different over the next 30 years without his arms and legs. I enjoyed the movie, but it seems tailor made to give certain types of plot focused nerds aneurysms.
You know, when starting this reaction, I was not expecting to see them go into a tangent about removing tree trunks. Blind Wave seems to always finds a way to turn inconsequential moments into entertaining talking points.
I had a very similar reaction when I first watched it. I liked it but something was off. But didn't know what. Watching your reaction made me realize what it was: the setup and Bruce Willis' casting makes you anticipate an action movie where both Joes team up and beat the bad guys. Instead, you get a more complex, less conventional second half that's great, but a lot less fun. The fact that these two never see eye-to-eye or connect with each other on any level whatsoever, is a bold and an unexpected choice, that feels unsatisfying, especially because you don't even realize right away that there is a payoff missing from the movie.
I would disagree it being "a lot less fun" That's the same argument I've heard towards Attack on Titan "oh they just talked that episode, that's a lot less fun" It's such a shallow way of looking at things. Action is fun, absolutely. But character interaction, growth, opposing ideals etc also are fun. I don't think this movie would've benefited from a standard "oh they team up and beat the bad guys", it'd just be another cookie cutter standard action movie. Instead we get one that to this day still gets talked about and theorized about because it dared to do something different. I also don't see how it's unsatisfying? The pay-off is that he realizes how to beat the loop, how to beat time itself, you know, the theme of the entire movie? That our actions have layered consequences?

The movie isn't really strictly ALL about time travel. It uses time travel as a thematic and literary device to give the characters choices to make and lessons to learn from your future self or your past self. The title and the ending somewhat give off the idea that the story is a loop but the director leaves the story as a linear plot. *Spoiler* This is shown when both Joe's die at the end. If you watch the trailer it advertises as a time travel/ action movie. But the fact that it strays from that and tries to develope EVERY character and gives it a more natural built world makes it more of an actual story telling movie than a boring sci Fi action flick we're probably seen a bunch of fucking times. I commend this film for trying to be original in a world where people would rather see 2 hours of straight action time bending mind fuckery. The whole telekinesis plot line is shown in the beginning. Then slightly towards the end. Then at the climatic ending. This movie is about telekinesis as much as it is about time travel. Barely. And that's what makes it Great and Original. Life and THIS movie is about "men tryna figure out how to keep what's theirs, it's the only kind of man there is". Plus the music/ special effects/ acting/ and set design are all great. The fact there's as little cgi as possible makes it even better. Edit: grammer
@@blinkachu5275 I think, ultimately, it is a better and a much more interesting choice to not have them come together, but the screenplay should've done a better job making the audience realize that it was doing that and should've explored that idea in more detail. They could've given us a few moments where they do get along, bond over shared experiences and empathize with each other's situations before realizing that they are at odds with each other or that they don't like each other. That way you still get the payoff and the conflict they have feels earned, because in the movie, they are being rude and condescending to each other right out of the gate without a clear reason.

I like the theory of the loop still going because he's angry over his mom's death. Cause that's what set him off in the first place, so therefore nothing changed since he didn't believe Blunts character was his mom and he ends up being the Rainmaker anyway. It's a decent theory but I can't remember exactly how it works so I might have it a bit wrong.
Its a very very good thing that tree stumps grow back, guys! Trees are good. We NEED them. It's messed up that humans cut them down for aesthetic reasons. Unless a tree is diseased, dying or brittle & could fall on your house, let them be! - end of tree hugging rant 😁
I had a similar feeling about the movie overall, however, I still think the movie is well made and that leaves me with a positive view of it as a whole.
Looper is one of my favorite movies. I've watched it so many times and made everyone I know (practically) watch it. Maybe I don't notice the issues with pacing because I love Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt so much.
This movie is a prime example of why I rarely like time travel movies. They typically don‘t make sense once you stop for even a minute to think about it and question the internal logic of the movie (there are exceptions). The ending is usually the worst part, where for some reason Hollywood writers love to suddenly change the logic of their time travel setup, in order to catch viewers by surprise. Well no shit it‘s a surprise, you just broke the rules you established before 😂
Joe didn’t need to go back kill the other kid because Old Joe got the memories when Sid killed that guy and Present Joe saw. He just knew that would be the Rainmaker.
This movie’s dope. Solid. I have a rule I try to abide by when I experience stories that involve time-travel: don’t think about it because it won’t make sense. We, as humans, have no idea how time works and therefore time-travel. There are several theories and when you sit down and think about them…they’re contradictory. For example (kinda): How did the Rainmaker become bad? What was the catalyst? Was it Old Joe’s actions? Can’t be because we see how his story plays out and he kills his older self and the Rainmaker is bad anyway. Rainmaker kills his wife which might be a spiteful thing because Old Joe would’ve killed his mom. Eye for an eye. Doesn’t make sense unless it was something else entirely. Maybe the one (that was supposed to be him to end his loop) Old Joe killed wasn’t him, but someone his future self sent in his place; we never saw his face. Then Old Joe comes back and does the deed and makes the Rainmaker. 🤷🏽♂️
theres only so many levels deep of questions that people will ask in a time travel scenario movie, if you can answer all of them...well you did your job. if you cant or dont even try leave time travel alone... But you should ask questions about whatever you are watching, i believe.

These guys are easily the best reactors on UA-cam. Their analysis of the film techniques used as well as the storytelling devices and pacing is really just unmatched when compared to other reactors. Even if I disagree with their opinions I can almost always see why they felt a certain way about a movie

Great Reaction! I been subscribed to you guys for a long time. I recommend you guys to watch the movie called Prisoners. The main cast is Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano, Terrance Howard, Viola Davis, and some more good actors. The movie is based on kidnapping. The Director is Denis Villeneuve.
So I seen a video where a guy cut down a tree and left the branches and leaves dry then he put a bottomless burn barrel around the stump and burned all the branches and leaves, probably took 12 hours but afterwards even the roots were gone because the ground was lower. Probably really good for the soil as well
12 Monkey's the TV show should be on the schedule. It is vastly better then a lot of stuff they'd watched like the MoU etc. It would provide some opportunity for real speculating and trying to figure out time and how it all pieces together, as well as the themes of family, brotherhood, mother's/father's what they would do for their children etc. Looper touches on some of this but 12 Monkey's expands upon this.
All I can think about is how Joe falls and dies in the beginning and everything restarts, yet 1: he's somehow able to stop that from happening, and 2: he kills himself at the end and things don't restart or change.
Other great (possibly unknown by you guys?) time travel movies: - Primer (2004) This is like the GRADUATE level/Master Class of time travel movies. You'll definitely need to watch it more than once. :D - TimeCrimes (CronoCrimenes)(2007) Just a small, down and dirty, "What if time travel fucked up your life?" It is in Spanish.

Great fucking movie. When the guy is having limbs n shit removed while on the way to the warehouse, is one of the most brutal examples of time travel/manipulation (or whatever lol) I have ever seen.
Even when I watched this on the big screen in the theatres, I didn't notice the CGI for Gordon-Levitz' face, blending his with Willis' face. But, I also wasn't expecting that to be possible (I might also have watched it in 3D). I think they may have blended their voices a bit, too. Once Eric mentioned something weird about the face, it became obvious.

I’m currently watching through the first Pokémon randomizer on this channel. Hearing Aaron tell his story of the tree that won’t die feels like justice for all the cheating he did in that Pokémon play through 😂
John Wick, The Matrix, and Bill and Ted, all referenced -- apparently this movie has some Keanu Reeves vibes. I definitely got the vibe that there was a subplot that got cut about the gun-twirling guy being Jeff Daniels' character's younger self, too. Maybe they just wanted it to be implied / a possibility to spur viewers to theorize about it, though.
Old Joe didn’t go back to kill that second kid because he saw the new memory of the TK kid before he got captured! So he knew that kid was the rainmaker!

When the talk moved to wishing the movie explored time travel and character interactions in greater length... Sounds like you guys need to watch the 12 Monkeys series. It's a solid four season Syfy show based on the movie. And the fourth season is written as the final season to wrap everything up, which is nice. You don't need to have seen the movie to watch the series, and ultimately, it might be better to skip the movie anyway if you're watching the series. The movie is great though too.

This is hands down the BEST movie that explores time travel for me! Highly recommend Rian Johnson's whole filmography. He tackles so many different genres with such craft and flair.
I don't want to ruin your world view but for time travel, watch Primer, and as far as Riann Johnson goes, he is an okay director at best.

I may personally not be a huge fan of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars, but I do like his works outside of Star Wars. I’d like to see more original works from him. That said, I’m intrigued on what he has to offer for Knives Out 2.
I love Rian Johnson’s work. Brick is another favorite of mine from him. From 2005. JGL is in all his movies, whether it’s a starring role, cameo, or voice work.

Rian Johnson is actually a really good filmmaker with incredibly interesting ideas. Even if you set Star Wars movie aside, his entire body of work is strong. Looper is great, Knives Out is fantastic, The Brothers Bloom is interesting, and Brick (his debut) is actually just straight up one of my favorite films. Not to mention he's directed some of the best episodes of TV ever made.
Also, I too, have been a big fan of the Kid Blue is Abe theory for a long time!
I still think The Last Jedi is one of the best Star Wars films in the franchise, however I understand why people have gripes with it given its very different tone. I maintain that I would *love* to see a Johnson directed trilogy, though one that stands on its own merits away from the Skywalker Saga. They probably shouldn't have ever had him come in to direct Episode VIII, and instead let Abrams do all of the sequel trilogy.

There's a goof in the storyline of this movie, it's a paradox - in the future that bruce willis comes from, the rainmaker exists, but in bruce willis' past, he never met sarah and sid. So he didn't shoot sid in the face and he didn't kill sarah. Joseph Gordon Levitt only met sarah because he got the paper from Bruce Willis, and went to the address on the paper. So if the rainmaker existed in Bruce Willis' timeline, who originally shot sid in the face and killed sarah? because Bruce Willis was never there.
yeah it might look that way, but really with more analysis it can be determined Bruce Willis character made the Rainmaker. If he chose a different career there would be no Rainmaker or Sarah. Essentially he made his doomed reality, yet unlike movies you can change yourself to create a better future not kill yourself though it is symbolic and kind of the same thing. The BTTF trilogy does a great job of hiding the same wisdom. Doc made the clocktower, if he hadn't done that we wouldn't have the Trilogy, Doc realizes that the future is not set but it is whatever you make it.
That's known as a causal loop, and while it's easy to lump it in with other paradoxes, it technically isn't a paradox at all! The same phenomena can be seen in Interstellar.

One of the biggest things about Rian Johnson's films (Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper, The Last Jedi, Knives Out) are ALL written in a way where the way the narrative details unfold feels _totally_ different when you're rewatching them a second time.
There are a lot of little hints about how information gets seeded around with Blue and others. The best part is that because Rian Johnson not only writes but he also storyboards all of his films, the shots and minor details are all intentionally set up, even if they're not fully expanded upon directly.
Oh yeah, TLJ feels totally different! You hate it even more the second time around. Assuming you would be brave enough to do that to yourself again
@@Pir-o Looper actually emphasizes a lot about why watching that film and The Last Jedi a second time are really important for Rian Johnson's movies. In both films - the most important parts of the stories are _the setting itself._
The main character is learning how to be a hero by focusing on how the seemingly unchanging parts of THAT SETTING needs to change. It also shows how only looking at their own personal suffering is just going to ensure that the cycle never changes, even though they ALL need it to.
The Last Jedi builds its setting and tensions off of the same elements that inspired the original trilogy of Star Wars - war films & Japanese cinema. TLJ is especially drawing from Apocalypse Now, Twelve O'Clock High, Letter Never Sent, & Rashomon for it's story, on top of the elements Rian Johnson is already known for in the other films mentioned in my OP (with the exception of Knives Out which he made later).
In Looper, (which was made before he was ever chosen to direct a Star Wars film), the whole film is using time-travel as a way to show how small events in your life can drastically reshape you decades later - both physically AND psychologically. The themes with the Rainmaker are all focused around the tiny little differences in life experience that will change the future of a kid with exceptional supernatural powers. The elements of the physical and psychological transformation all have some pretty clear links to the same changes linked to how Anakin became Darth Vader.
The issues Anakin was facing as a former slave kid upon being taken from his home were; his father figure Qui-Gon dying, his brother Obi-Wan having to raise & mentor him, and his actual mother dying. On top of that, he fell in love with & married the princess who rescued him, while belonging to the Jedi Order where attachments like that are forbidden. Anakin losing the attachments to those he loved are central to his suffering in the same way that the end of Looper lays out why the Rainmaker turns into a monster. Darth Vader as a tool to preserve the Empire is just as critical as the Rainmaker creating the world of Loopers as assassins fated to murder themselves to keep that syndicate in power in the future.
That's why Anakin's pain was manipulated by Palpatine into a fear of loss that blinded him to what he had become. Looper follows the same threads on the pains, losses, and lack of critical family figures that cause the Rainmaker to become a monster in the future. The key element is that it's about a cycle that locks itself into repeating, just like The First Order bringing back the Empire in The Force Awakens. Looper is all about breaking that cycle for someone ELSE rather than for yourself and so is TLJ. That's following the same themes in RotJ of Luke having to save his father Anakin rather than killing Vader OR saving himself from the Emperor.
In The Last Jedi, those themes are at the core of why war profiteering fueling both sides is a conflict that causes governments to ignore the suffering of children outside of the immediate scope of either side's jurisdiction. The Old Republic wasn't helping slave kids like Anakin on worlds ruled by syndicates like the Hutts on Tatooine, and the New Republic still didn't help the slave kids on Cantonica where Canto Bight was fueled by the money from ensuring that conflict kept people looking elsewhere. Those who weren't busy with their own issues were rich enough to ignore the obvious exploitation, unaffected enough to not care, or to feel their own safety was too much to risk helping them - which is why it's up to Finn & Rose to tear down that facade that no one else will.
In war OR peace, the issues that lead to the child Anakin eventually becoming Darth Vader were still unresolved in the Galaxy _regardless of who was in charge._ That's why the identity of Rey's family doesn't matter there, because she has the power to help those who need it and grew up as a deserted nobody like her, which is all that matters for WHY she needs to do something.
The old Jedi Council forbidding attachments out of fear of the Dark Side is why Kylo Ren severs attachments as a means to embrace the Dark Side by refusing to care about people he loves like his parents. Ben struggles to kill Han AND his mother because his attachments are a strength to the good in him, not a weakness. Thus, Rey has to hold on to those attachments to save what matters, while also refusing to join Ben, no matter how much he desperately needs someone else. She can't let that attachment pull her to darkness, she needs to use their connection to ensure Ben isn't lost forever.
That's why TLJ ends by giving that same hope of being a heroic Jedi to a slave kid through the legend of Luke Skywalker using non-violent resistance to save the people he cares about.
Luke's legacy follows the same lessons Yoda taught for how he beat the Emperor - using the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER attack. That was spread throughout the Galaxy in a way that detached the Jedi from being beholden to the sterile and dogmatic approach of the Jedi Council that lead to Darth Vader.
That understanding and the old texts gave Rey everything she needed to succeed in bringing hope to others by ensuring that Luke wasn't The Last Jedi.
*Those are all perspectives that you don't have until you've **_already_** seen the end of the films.*
That's exactly how ALL Rian Johnson's films are laid out, and why they're all not only worth watching twice, but are a VERY different experience the second time, because you know to focus on something TOTALLY different as being the most important part of the story from what you assume at the beginning.

There are a lot of interesting things to discover from other people by reading & engaging with reaction channels' comments (especially the Blindwave viewers). Learning things from other people's experienced point of view is a great way to spend time and gain new perspectives that might change how you think about other things you like.
I have really detailed conversations in YT comments about things like this with other people… all the time - because I take the time to write things worth reading. The type of people who DO take that time to read it are the ones who share value by making replies equally worth reading. You reap what you sow, as it were.
That's why you & I have totally different experiences in what we usually get from YT comments, based solely on the comments we make and how we interact with them. You just _think_ no one reads that stuff because you don't take the time to ever try. Dismissing that experience outright by ignoring what I wrote is… only your loss not mine.

I like how the movie explicitly tells you not to think about the mechanics of time travel because the rules for it don't make a whole lot of sense. They won't kill the young version of a looper on the run because 'it would mess things up' but disfiguring and amputating them won't? Certainly the guy's life is going to be significantly different over the next 30 years without his arms and legs.
I enjoyed the movie, but it seems tailor made to give certain types of plot focused nerds aneurysms.

I had a very similar reaction when I first watched it. I liked it but something was off. But didn't know what. Watching your reaction made me realize what it was: the setup and Bruce Willis' casting makes you anticipate an action movie where both Joes team up and beat the bad guys. Instead, you get a more complex, less conventional second half that's great, but a lot less fun. The fact that these two never see eye-to-eye or connect with each other on any level whatsoever, is a bold and an unexpected choice, that feels unsatisfying, especially because you don't even realize right away that there is a payoff missing from the movie.

It's such a shallow way of looking at things. Action is fun, absolutely. But character interaction, growth, opposing ideals etc also are fun. I don't think this movie would've benefited from a standard "oh they team up and beat the bad guys", it'd just be another cookie cutter standard action movie. Instead we get one that to this day still gets talked about and theorized about because it dared to do something different.
I also don't see how it's unsatisfying? The pay-off is that he realizes how to beat the loop, how to beat time itself, you know, the theme of the entire movie? That our actions have layered consequences?

The movie isn't really strictly ALL about time travel. It uses time travel as a thematic and literary device to give the characters choices to make and lessons to learn from your future self or your past self. The title and the ending somewhat give off the idea that the story is a loop but the director leaves the story as a linear plot. *Spoiler* This is shown when both Joe's die at the end. If you watch the trailer it advertises as a time travel/ action movie. But the fact that it strays from that and tries to develope EVERY character and gives it a more natural built world makes it more of an actual story telling movie than a boring sci Fi action flick we're probably seen a bunch of fucking times. I commend this film for trying to be original in a world where people would rather see 2 hours of straight action time bending mind fuckery. The whole telekinesis plot line is shown in the beginning. Then slightly towards the end. Then at the climatic ending. This movie is about telekinesis as much as it is about time travel. Barely. And that's what makes it Great and Original. Life and THIS movie is about "men tryna figure out how to keep what's theirs, it's the only kind of man there is".
Plus the music/ special effects/ acting/ and set design are all great. The fact there's as little cgi as possible makes it even better.

@@blinkachu5275 I think, ultimately, it is a better and a much more interesting choice to not have them come together, but the screenplay should've done a better job making the audience realize that it was doing that and should've explored that idea in more detail. They could've given us a few moments where they do get along, bond over shared experiences and empathize with each other's situations before realizing that they are at odds with each other or that they don't like each other. That way you still get the payoff and the conflict they have feels earned, because in the movie, they are being rude and condescending to each other right out of the gate without a clear reason.

Cause that's what set him off in the first place, so therefore nothing changed since he didn't believe Blunts character was his mom and he ends up being the Rainmaker anyway.

This movie is a prime example of why I rarely like time travel movies. They typically don‘t make sense once you stop for even a minute to think about it and question the internal logic of the movie (there are exceptions). The ending is usually the worst part, where for some reason Hollywood writers love to suddenly change the logic of their time travel setup, in order to catch viewers by surprise. Well no shit it‘s a surprise, you just broke the rules you established before 😂

I have a rule I try to abide by when I experience stories that involve time-travel: don’t think about it because it won’t make sense. We, as humans, have no idea how time works and therefore time-travel. There are several theories and when you sit down and think about them…they’re contradictory.
For example (kinda): How did the Rainmaker become bad? What was the catalyst? Was it Old Joe’s actions? Can’t be because we see how his story plays out and he kills his older self and the Rainmaker is bad anyway. Rainmaker kills his wife which might be a spiteful thing because Old Joe would’ve killed his mom. Eye for an eye. Doesn’t make sense unless it was something else entirely. Maybe the one (that was supposed to be him to end his loop) Old Joe killed wasn’t him, but someone his future self sent in his place; we never saw his face. Then Old Joe comes back and does the deed and makes the Rainmaker. 🤷🏽♂️

theres only so many levels deep of questions that people will ask in a time travel scenario movie, if you can answer all of them...well you did your job. if you cant or dont even try leave time travel alone... But you should ask questions about whatever you are watching, i believe.

The main cast is Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano, Terrance Howard, Viola Davis, and some more good actors. The movie is based on kidnapping. The Director is Denis Villeneuve.
So I seen a video where a guy cut down a tree and left the branches and leaves dry then he put a bottomless burn barrel around the stump and burned all the branches and leaves, probably took 12 hours but afterwards even the roots were gone because the ground was lower. Probably really good for the soil as well

The time torture scene shock me the first time I saw it
12 Monkey's the TV show should be on the schedule. It is vastly better then a lot of stuff they'd watched like the MoU etc. It would provide some opportunity for real speculating and trying to figure out time and how it all pieces together, as well as the themes of family, brotherhood, mother's/father's what they would do for their children etc. Looper touches on some of this but 12 Monkey's expands upon this.
All I can think about is how Joe falls and dies in the beginning and everything restarts, yet 1: he's somehow able to stop that from happening, and 2: he kills himself at the end and things don't restart or change.
At the end loop continues because she got all the silver and gold and created loopers. Loop with loops within loops. Just like 12monkeys TV SERIES

Even when I watched this on the big screen in the theatres, I didn't notice the CGI for Gordon-Levitz' face, blending his with Willis' face.
But, I also wasn't expecting that to be possible (I might also have watched it in 3D). I think they may have blended their voices a bit, too.
Once Eric mentioned something weird about the face, it became obvious.
I think it was prostetics, so he can resemble Bruce Willis in his youth more.

I definitely got the vibe that there was a subplot that got cut about the gun-twirling guy being Jeff Daniels' character's younger self, too. Maybe they just wanted it to be implied / a possibility to spur viewers to theorize about it, though.

Old Joe didn’t go back to kill that second kid because he saw the new memory of the TK kid before he got captured! So he knew that kid was the rainmaker!
In the end he did save his wife though by never meeting her.
