    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Now's your chance to help others.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you and for parents of Deaf children. A donation (or a small monthly donation) from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now YOU can help out a kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, hard-working, and ... humble (heh) ASL teacher -- just go to the link below and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”
    www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G
    Thanks!
    - Dr. Bill
    p.s. You can have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95. See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at:
    lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm
    Take care and love to you all.
    :)

    Learning signs and watching people communicating in sign is so different. It is important for me to see communication in action, so thank you for your videos.

    I sincerely wish I had friends in the deaf community. But I’ve been practicing nonstop because if ever the day I encounter anyone from that community I want them to know they have a friend. I don’t have anyone in my family or close to me who’s deaf or hard of hearing, I just know I would want someone to make the effort for me. And quite honestly, SL is so lovely.

      Google: Deaf Events near me
      Chances are if you live in or near a city a few options will pop up for you to go visit and start making Deaf friends.

      Bill Vicars okay thank you! I’m just nervous they won’t want me there. I hope that’s not the case though, I just know how it feels to want people to actually try and give a crap

    Canadian Asl has a sign for style and my teacher showed us signs for 6 words the textbook was teaching us to finger spell. He said Canadian Asl has more signs and Americans fingerspell more. Thoughts?

    • @M_SC
      @M_SC 5 років тому

      (Not your sign for stylish)

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 років тому

      My thought is that you are fortunate to have a knowledgeable instructor. I have only positive things to say about Canada and Canadian ASL. Yes, it seems to me that Canadian and various European signed languages tend to have signs for things that ASL fingerspells. I'd enjoy knowing your list of six words that the textbook spells but for which your teacher knows signs.
      For what it is worth, we can use the sign "KIND / type of" to mean "style" (when the word style means a certain type of thing or condition).

  • @baudecordier
    @baudecordier 5 років тому

    Hey chief...yes I can't wait to show all my friends the versions of 'gross", but the nifty one you saved for the end, and said was derived from signed English, I didn't get the root etymology. Frankly my first thought was the [spoiler] the last shot from Carrie. But that wasn't gross, right? I would take that sign and polysemically with proper face to mean "scared the living shit out of me." But as I say, where does that sign come from?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 років тому

      Ha! That 4th version of "gross" (the joke sign / pun) is based on a compound of the Signed English sign for "GROW" and the fingerspelled letter "S." Thus it is a type of bilingual pun. You have to have an understanding of both ASL and English for it to be funny. Again -- it is a "joke" sign and should not be used in situations where people might not realize you are intentionally using it to be "witty or funny."

    • @baudecordier

      Grow-s. Ah. All I knew before was pasteurize and understand.

    What would you do with a student with dog allergies?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 років тому

      In the past I have indeed had students with dog allergies. The approach was:
      1. Consult with the student as to any prefered solutions.
      2. Put the dog in the garage with a bone, dog food, and fresh water.
      3. Sweep and mop the studio floor (we have no carpet in the studio).
      4. Use multiple HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) air-cleaners.
