I got so used to the silent videos that hearing sound now is weird!
I muted the sound on my phone so it was normal 😂😂
i actually really like the sound for me (hearing), because it helps to notice some of the little things im not familiar with yet, ALSO, my endless curiosity wonders how much sound some people put into things. i wonder when the class laughs, if he makes sounds when he laughs, what his voice sounds like (vocal cords, not necessarily 'speaking'). im just curious about everything. also it helps a little with context for signs that 'touch', do they do so gently without sound, or with a 'pop'/ sound (noting amount of pressure, etc). just curious little things. i can never get enough of the sound of laughing though, so since bill has a great sense of humor, i would love to hear all the laughs if possible. always easier to turn off volume than find ways to get the ringing out of your ears. :/
I always watch with no sound in a quiet room for no distractions-but Bill is so funny he makes me laugh out loud and I startle myself with my own laughing 😂
At 4:44 Claudia responds to the question "Do you have a favorite movie?" with fingerspelling "IT" which was a recent horror movie at that time.
Bill signs "again" and she fingerspells "IT" again.
Bill fingerspells "IT" and then does a dramatic sign for "FEAR". Claudia laughs, then Bill fingerspells "IT" two more times.
I’ve been trying to teach myself sign language for a while now and came across your videos. As I have no deaf acquaintances, your videos have really helped me learn to understand signs without reading subtitles or hearing what is being signed. I get so excited to watch a new video every night to learn and understand more! Thank you!

I LOVE how you have to figure out the signs without sound!!! This one, for some reason, went really fast. I had to back track more often than in other videos. Still... I have watched all videos atleast 2x so that I have a better grasp of it. Thank you soooo much for putting this out here to learn with. Your humor makes it fun!!!

Im glad the volume isnt muted. I know there is no sound anyway but its kind of weird without the white noise and people laughing and stuff
that's why I always play Christmas music or nature sounds when I'm watching his other videos without audio
at 9:30 Bill asks Claudia what her favorite internet site is. She thinks about it. Bill suggests Lifeprint (his own website) and signs the namesign "LP", and smiles. Claudia shakes her head and Bill signs "Don't have?" and she shakes her head again. Bill asks her to think hard by signing "THINK". Claudia then fingerspells "UA-cam". Bill signs "COOL" and then shows us the namesign for "UA-cam" at 9:48. There were several variations. The last was simply fingerspelling "YT". Bill prefers the first namesign he used.

I've taught ASL for a long time.
For many years students would ask me what my mom did and she was alive so I'd tell them.
Then as happens with the circle of life there came a day when a student asked me that question and I realized the answer had changed significantly.
Thank you so much for making these videos! I feel so grateful to learn this way since I am unable to afford in person classes and want to communicate with my friend in ASL better 💖

When he asked her favorite movie, it was funny she responded with "Star Wars" because I was thinking the same thing! I also noticed she has the rebellion symbol on her sleeve.
hmm... I couldn't figure out what she first signed, it looked like S-T - is that fs for "Star Wars"? But when Bill asked her to sign again, she fs I-T, to which he pantomimed fear; so I figured "It".

Hey Bill, can you explain to me why it's so important to use your dominant hand when signing? What if you are ambidextrous? As someone who uses both hands equally I have the hardest time with this.

Switching back and forth between hand dominance would be the equivalent of having a voiced conversation and changing the tone of your voice randomly throughout the conversation. The other person will almost certainly still understand you and will almost certainly find it at least slightly annoying.
Tip: Pick a hand to call your dominant hand and then do a portion of your studies sitting on your non-dominant hand while just making the signs with your dominant hand best you can. AFTER you've gotten into the habit of using your dominant hand you can add your (chosen) non-dominant hand back into your practice.

This one felt harder than the others I've watched so far, like I'd missed a lesson. I've looked, and I haven't missed any yet, but it felt that way. I think the problem is that I need more practice, but I don't have anyone to practice with. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on practicing ASL?

I've had a gameplay of Spyro 2 playing on another tab for the purpose of white noise, and there were some points where the game had popping sounds that synced up perfectly with the hands making contact, making it sound like actual clapping! This happened several times! XD
I should hire someone to insert whooshing sounds when I move my hands around. Then when I make contact they could insert "thoom" sounds -- like in comic books and super-hero movies!*

Is ASL used in Canada cause I live in Quebec and I feel like learning might not be the best idea because it might not even be the one people use

I have that book. The content is mostly the same as the ASL used here in the U.S. I like that book because it also includes many Canadian geography-related signs (provinces, places, etc.).
Quebec French speakers use LSQ. It's different.

What did he sign at the very beginning after he signed Claudia's name and before he signed how are you?
I started to spell her name, restarted, did a "thumb-up"
Is Claudia already familiar with some of the new signs introduced this lesson, or did I miss some vocab in previous videos? Things like FROM, DRIVE, WITH, WALK were new to me but not to her. Similarly, is the vocab significantly different between the (version) and older lessons? I switched partway without realizing it, whoops.
You might want to consider going to the actual lesson page and clicking on the individual vocabulary links and then reading through the explanations and examples.

The think to realize here is that the UA-cam instructional videos are not "the" lessons.
The UA-cam videos are part of an overall curriculum based mainly at Lifeprint.com.
That curriculum (the ASL University curriculum) simply makes use of UA-cam for free storage and streaming of the massive video files.

If you said "My mom works in communications," would you just use the sign for communicate? As in communications in local government.
A great place to ask that sort of question is the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group:

Well, let's be honest here: Telling someone that your mom works in communications doesn't really do much to improve their understanding of what you mom does. That goes for both Hearing English speakers and particularly so for the Deaf. I state that as someone who has a Bachelor of Arts degree in "Communication" from Weber State University. (My doctorate was in Deaf Education but I'll always be grateful for my undergraduate work in Communication.)
If for some reason you feel that word "communications" is really important to convey to your conversation partner or audience then sure, go ahead and sign COMMUNICATE and then maybe fingerspell "communications" (while really emphasizing the "S") -- but realize that to most people that means nothing since most people don't know the differences between "communicate" and "communications."
"Communications" has more to do with the systems, technology, media, and tactics involved with communicating with the masses (or individuals in targeted groups) to achieve specific business or societal goals.
"Communications" is a nebulous (cloudy or hazy) term to most people.
(Note: The CAPS below are not yelling -- they are ASL gloss).
So, sure, feel free to use the sign "COMMUNICATE" in the context of "MY MOM LINE--OF-WORK COMMUNICATE. SHE ... (and then list off some of her specific duties)."

I can tell you that as someone who has worked in university settings for 30 years the sign COMMUNICATE is routinely used by interpreters and Deaf academics to refer to "communications," "the Communication Department" or "She is majoring in Communication."
It is also fairly common to see the folks at NAD (National Association of the Deaf) and others use the sign COMMUNICATE when expanding the acronym FCC as "Federal Communications Commission."
(For example: "FCC, FEDERAL COMMUNICATE COMMITTEE")

I-When he signed “my mom is dead” I was so shocked, I’m sure he used the sign die/dead because it’s simple, but jeez it came across very harsh and I’m so sorry for your loss if you’re reading this. Is there a different sign for a euphemism to death like passing away or is the connotation based on facial expression???
Edit: I’m stupid and didn’t watch after he said that phrase until after making the comment. I don’t know what he said thought so I still don’t know if she’s dead or not. Either way my condolences.
In Deaf Culture we are often more direct than in Hearing culture . It is called "Deaf Blunt." If you invest enough time in the Deaf World you get used to it.
Yes, my mother has (to use a Hearing World euphemism) "passed away."
Some Deaf "do" use euphemisms when discussing death. The most common euphemism is probably the sign for "gone." However I've seen some people sign "pass" and spell "away." ASL purists will start finger-wagging and call that "Signed English" -- but I think that is a myopic view. ASL is complex and full of signs or phrases "borrowed" from other languages and cultures. However, "borrowed" is the wrong word. A more accurate word is "adopted" or the words "incorporated from." After a phrase has been adopted into ASL it is no longer foreign -- it becomes part of ASL. That is how living languages work, succeed -- and keep living.
