  • Vintage trumpet mutes including the Bobby Shew Soloist, harmon cup mute, AP&M Buzz, and an update to the Soulo Harmon mute.
The Soloist harmon was created by Bobby Shew and it's one of the most sought after harmon mutes that there is. It has a very unique sound and is geared towards playing on a close mic.
The AP&M Aristocrat Buzz mute is by far the best buzz mute I've ever played - what a unique sound.
The last vintage mute I discuss in this video is a rare 1930s Harmon brand Cup Mute. Very cool, and a nice sounding mute. A big thanks to Harmon for lending me this mute to review!
Finally, an update on the Soulo harmon mute! Since I got mine at the ITG conference in Anaheim 3 years ago (2017) they have tweaked a few things, including replacing the cork with foam, an updated stem, and an insert which really gives the mute another dimension.

I love the sound of that old cup mute! That Yardbird Suite phrase sounded so authentic. Maybe you could record yourself playing some Fats Navarro solos on it!

Thanks, Alex! Well, that's the right era for that sound. I love playing these old mutes when I'm doing bebop gigs, I find it fun to use mutes from the time the music was created. Fats solos ... that would be a fun experiment. I'll think if there is a way to incorporate something like that into a future video. Perhaps a comparison playing an old solo using different vintage and modern mutes. That would take some serious planning.

Thanks! Unfortunately it was just on loan ... a really great sounding cup mute. It's got that classic sound.

There is a nice recording of Ella and Louis, The Nearness of You, Louis does some nice mute work. Which mute would you use to recreate the trumpet part; true to the recording as possible?

I'd probably go with a Shastock straight mute, an old one with the label that says made in Cleveland, not one that was after Micro products bought them. An old Nuss mute (if you can find one) would also be great. Also may want to consider an old Ray Robinson straight, one without rivets. Those are also fantastic.

I just purchased a Soulo Harmon mute from BrassWinds Woodwinds. It didn’t come with the small tube. I can’t find a description of the small tube coming with the mute. Do you know if it comes just in a select few? And to your followers, did the small tube come with your mute?

Hey Reid, I believe they had sent that to me with an updated harmon stem. The small inner tube was sent with it, at the time it sounded like it was a new addition. Perhaps try reaching out to soulo?? They are all great people.

I really like the sound of the Soulo Harmon with the insert. When Soulo updated the Harmon, did they change the model number? If I order one, how will I know if I'm getting the new or old version?

Hey Rob, thanks for checking out the video! That I don't know ... Safest bet is to reach out to Soulo via their website or Facebook page and ask!
