This had me in tears. Hearing of their persecution and how the responded. It takes immense, real strength to respond to this kind of violence with dignity compassion.

@@flanigan_a-go-go I would think that the original question pertained to rages on a personal basis - domestic violence, road rage, fight between neighbors, etc. - where the law of the land is on everyone's side. For road rage, yes, it might work to stay quiet and let the flow of traffic move things along. For domestic violence, silence and love have limits.
There are laws. There are social helps. There are friends and family. Be realistic and reach out.
Thay's response pertained to experiences in a rather politically-charged time on a national and even international level. Yes, the teaching called for silence and love, and the reality was that he and the followers had no choice other than to stay silent and be disassembled. The same went for the rest of the country. There was no law. There was only suppression.
I admire him for that. Namo Buddhay.
His unshakable faith and belief on compassion is just out of this world. He's a true bodhisattva, and I'm so thankful for the youtube and internet to make it possible for millions of people like us to be touched by his words and love. Thank you Plumvillageonline for uploading these videos for us!
As a Vietnamese, I know there was such resistance towards Thay and other Viet who fled the country during war time. This happened with the old government, which are much more welcoming now. Really hope there would be a plum village in Vietnam soon, in Thay's hometown.
We had communism in Romania too. Half of the history of the country was spent under a communist regime. I think there fact that is banned worldwide is saying words. I hope Vietnam will experience a change of regime and have democracy (not perfect, though better than an illegal regime like communism). 👍🏻
You when wronged: "We do not hate those that have [insert injustice done unto you]. For we know they are victims of wrong perceptions that have given rise to fear and suspicion. We hope they will look and understand us better. Our intention is not to harm them, only to help..."
Such a difficult thing to do. To find those seeds in oneself that would respond in like to violence and transform them into acts of love. Thay is a model of being to reach for.
Once in a while, I come back to take refuge and courage in this marvelous testimony.
I have struggled with rage and I realize that it was just wrong perceptions and confusion. What I really was feeling is fear and knowing that makes me want to run and figure out the truth, stick with the facts and avoid my judgements. Also, once you start saying no to abuse, you'll learn who is really on the path. I think understanding is key and avoiding that kind of toxicity is key to a firm enlightened state.
I am so pleased to see him so healthy after his recent illness. Such wisdom and calm. We are so lucky to have his example to follow.

I think important thing is not to get involved with some one who is in rage. The most important thing is to learn calm your self down first. Some times our buttons get pushed so hard that we cannot avoid rage, the best thing to do at that time is to walk away in a room and scream out loud to ur self rather than having a go at some one else.

It is clear to me that dear Thich Nhat Hanh is truly an enlightened being. Nibbana is close for him. I am light years away from it but that is A-okay. I am on a journey. I am whole and great just as I am. I need to always be in the present; I need to be mindful; and I need to be filled with love and compassion. And may I see the emptiness of all phenomena. I sincerely wish love, peace and enlightenment to all.
Good for you knowing this! Yes you don't need fixed because your just as your supposed to be. Nothing wrong with you an you make adjustments when you see the need to.

This is a brilliant question of a teenager! I remember when I was an 18 year old, my private teacher whom I had crush on stepped outside of the room for couple of mins arguing with a parent; he came back raged with agony and was walking heavily with anger. I was paralyzed to talk to him. I didn’t know what to say or do. I just watched him talk, and walk. Still paralyzed and nodding. Couple of mins he was calm down. He sat and we start the session. It was 8 years ago, but I recall it to this day. That was a unique experience to see a stranger be calm down by me just being silent!

Perhaps the act of “waging peace” is much harder than “waging war” but, if the culture of peace takes hold; at least we will remove the suffering we create ourselves and be able to turn our attention to mitigating the suffering we already experience without wars.
Very educative. I love his videos. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.
There are many good ways we can deal with anyone who is in rage either in public or private situation effectively. Mindfulness practice daily in our lives automatically guiding us how to handle all sort of conflicts kindly and successfully🙏
Remember to breathe deeply before applying the five steps of conflict-solution strategies as such: acknowledge it/accept it/embrace it/transform it/letting it go🙏

Exactly! Outside of Chistian belief, there's the belief that Jesus was heavily influenced by Buddhism. Some Muslim sholars defend this, and there's some archaeological evidence of this in India too.

Oui, c'est en effet ça. De mon expérience, j'ai dû apprendre à me défendre, avec justesse et fermement. Avec des mots que la partie adverse comprends. Depuis l'enfance, j'avais toujours été dans la compassion, la pleine conscience et ayant une patience d'ange, celà m'a deservie plus d'une fois. Hélas. Et, ça m'avais même nuit. Des décenies de vie très dure et de maltraitences non recherchés, m'ont laissé des traces, car je n'ai pas mis le frein de suite, aux autres. Ni suis-je partie, très vite. (Ce n'était pas possible).
Donc, je dirais, que si l'on est déjà une personne bienveillante, aimante et gentille, faites attention de ne pas vous faire épuiser votre patience et votre compassion. Car, hélas, quand vous aurez trop subit, il n y aura plus beaucoup de patience ni de compassion. 🙏🕊

crazieeez correct. By slowing down, your mind is also invited to slow down, and to watch and notice your thoughts as you speak. Many unconscious people in "the world" speak at machine-gun pace, hardly ever taking a breath and not letting others speak. When the mind has been purified, everything begins to slow because time is no longer relevant or necessary. The slow speech of the Master has a certain vibration to it. Within that slow speech is also thoughts that are being watched and observed and allowed to reveal themselves. Thought and speech are connected. This doesn't mean he is a slow-thinker. But rather the opposite.

The irony for me is that he's talking about peacefully and effectively dealing with anger and violence, but my reaction to that sound is anger and violent impulses.

The tapping is rythmic and increases and decreases. Aiding you to listen more intently. It's an aid. You really think it's a coincidence it's there? Even the pauses in his speaking are helpful. Your mind wanders and then comes back to what he was, is and will say. It has semi hypnotic qualities too

Yes- that's my point. I don't mean to insult- it's just ironic because I was going to give you the same link. If you read his history here or elsewhere, nowhere is there mention that he fought the Khmer Rouge and survived them. He was in Vietnam not Cambodia. The section you posted is referring to politics with Cambodia and North Korea so I'm not sure your point. Again, there's not a section you can copy and paste from his history that indicates he survived the KR.

All the "victims" of today's culture should pay attention to the correct way to be a hard core victim: Forgive your attacker. Respond in silence with compassion. Bide your time and survive. And then later on... respond LOUDLY with compassion. And this coming from a person who really was a victim, and who organized against, real - fucking terrifying - multi-state sponsored military violence. Literally.. he fought the law... and the law lost.

bboyy 1871 spiritual teachers often refer to themself in the third person, or another kind of nomenclature (eg; "the parable of X - with X being their name - or "teacher says" or "in the story of X" and so on. This is because they are making a distinction between the Body-mind self or ego self (which has identity with a name and a past and a Story) to their true Self (capital S): the spirit that never left Reality or God. It is not "behaviouralism" as is suggested by a post below. It is a mindful way of assisting the listener or student to begin to unravel the false or wrong-minded self or ego by pointing to the working of the split mind. All advanced non-duality teachers tend to speak in this manner as a teaching / learning communication tool. It takes a great deal of parablising, allegory, examples and narrative for teachers to show students how tricky the ego mind is, and creating that distance between themself as master and themself as body-mind is paramount to good instruction.
