The memory of this nun repeating the question is impressive. in every video she impresses me. How does she manage to memorize everything and reformulate the question and its context to perfection? she doesn't even take notes. Incomprehensible.

@Omar Q coz your you still haven't transcended your ego self... if you've begun to understand it, You'll see that that "loan" was just you thinking it needed that piece of paper to justify your value in order to contribute back to society, fyi, thats not really a bad thing if you actually learnt anything from your degree program and are able to give value back to society, nation or world, and by doing so, you can and will clear that loan unless of course you don't intend to be of service...

Crazy beautiful ! I I’ve never hear anything like that. If If God is beyond duality we’re also God . Why is it so hard for our minds to realize this. I can imagine it but I don’t see it. I know the self is an illusion, and it really makes perfect sense in my mind, because I always had this feeling that something really big is obscure to our mind . but I can see it, only imagine it …

@@MrsBDatCreole hi ! I guess the this experience comes from the fact that you get more and more in touch with your awareness, it is the natural product of meditation. The self is constituted by multiples elements ( thoughts , feelings, body perceptions, memories , etc) and then you see that awareness is only one , without it you wouldn’t even know of the self . Is the only things that’s left . But don’t rationalize. You have to experience it . It will arise naturally from your meditation practice .

To practice the mindlessness is to deny the ideas of self, and replace the I for ego that in reality there may be an end to identifying where and why we are. Thank-You for the teaching

Very educative. I love his videos. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

By trying to conflate the two teachings into one you lose the essence of both. This spiritual egalitarianism is a symptom of the new age, where everyone wants to believe that everything is equal and valid. This view does not hold up to serious scholarship nor experiential truth.
Jesus and Buddha may have some crossover teachings in Sila (Moral virtue) but that is about where it ends. Buddha teaches cessation, Jesus teaches eternal life in Heaven and Atta (self) in the form of the soul and God. Buddha announced the truth of Anatta (non-self) and is the only teacher in historicity to do so.

Buddhism Hinduism some say even Judaism and Christianity were branches which grew out from the original Vedic teachings and traditions. Vedic teaching are that our center if we know how to reach it, is pure happiness i.e. bliss unity..they developed a way through meditation and yoga assanas and grace of the guru would relieve the mind of stress and suffering. but the purity of the teachings on how to reach that state got lost along the way through the eons and became teachings to believe in. Originally the teachings came second to the direct experience through meditation..the teachings weren't designed to provide the experience but to help make sense of what the student was experiencing for himself.

I hope this woman will come here to tell us if she has overcomed her problems or sufferings after listening to his answer. Her problem lies on her strong belief in God so much so that she must talk about it in her name as well as in her question, even believing that her sufferings are God's plan. If so, why don't she accept her sufferings and why study Buddhism ? I have seen many people suffered because of self-conflicting belief like her.

I can appreciate his statement that the self cannot die because there's no self in the first place. That is true. And yet there is abundant evidence of selfishness everywhere, so that saying the self must die can be useful too. Okay, the "self" is an illusion. But the point is that it's a very strong illusion, with both subtle and obvious consequences, many of which are destructive. So the illusion must die. Regardless of whether there's in fact a self or not, selfish tendencies remain, and it is those tendencies that must die. Selfish habits are extremely strong, and we use the word "self" in this instance as a convenient label for those habits. Simply saying "there is no self" doesn't remove or dissolve the problem because the habits usually prevail. Another way of putting it: you can say, as Thich does, that there is no self, but it must be the fruit of inquiry; it must be a genuine discovery. To those who are caught up in selfish tendencies, the statement has little value.

Mary Therese McCool , the Buddha didn't say he doesn't know if god exist or not. In one occasion he kept quiet as he knew the answer is not of any help to the person who asked. In Avamtasaka Sutra the Buddha stated universe and everything in it were created by mind and matter, no single creator god. Right upon enlightenment he used the word "house builder" to refer to the creator(s) which created this living body and he pointed it to our own mind again. In another occasion he also rebutted the notion of the existence of an omniscience, omnipotent , all merciful and all powerful god all creator when touching on the existence of good and evil in the world.

Basically ideas are not real, even the idea of "ideas are not being real" is an idea and too is not real, and so on. No statements can be taken as absolute, even the most obvious ones, even though they seem to work the way you expect. Once we see that no knowledge is worth the effort we get afraid as effort is what gives our lives meaning. We must learn to live without effort and not being afraid of inner emptiness. Of course now that I said this it is now an idea, so don't agree or disagree with me, find out for yourself.

Alan Watts covers this topic so well in The Book and many other writings...loves
tis all about 'giving', coming from 'giver instead of getter'...when the woman talked about 'getting' angry or anxious or depressed' she's really 'meaning' she 'contracts' depression (which is a good state preceding growth and further awakening's joys) and she 'contracts' (or creates for 'herself') anxiety etc....om

Even if they were all native speakers, when restating the question, the energy of the sangha listening is intentional and powerful. I use mindful meditation, but to me even the notion of religion and especially God ( how many religions besides Christianity say God) are great cause of suffering and egotistical assumptions. I'm so soothed by thich nhat hanhs voice, but I have to disagree with some of his philosophical pronouncements on the nature of reality. The self is clearly a real phenomenon, and to say it isn't is merely to verify for others that you refuse to acknowledge the phenomenon at hand. What is the self? It is a socially generated process that is continuously about the body - that is, its about regulation of feeling and being. From hunger, to thirst, to pride, to shame, to anger, each of us has a unique history of being wired by these feelings, which in turn speaks to a unique history of tensegrity with the environment around you. The self always exists and always interfaces between ourselves and the world, or between ourselves and our self experience. We cannot do or be without concepts. Thich talks as if his nihilistic epistemology isn't about regulating his feeling states as an organism. It is. This particular Buddhist conception relaxes his anxiety about life and reality, so he assumes without justification that its a true conception of things. But the fact is, the field of relations which make something what it is matters as much as first person experience. There is an intrinsic complementary here, and so, true objective understanding in the sense of a coherent and justifiable belief is one which consults first person perspectives with second and third person viewpoints. All together, it is clear that the individual self is a creation of spacetime configurations; and that we must acknowledge its ontological reality whilst recognizing it is subordinate to a totality - being, or God or Buddha consciousness - a unity which the part emerges from and is always intrinsically regulated by.

@@MrsBDatCreole nothing really to explain. When he speaks, he speaks as much to remind himself "what is true" as he intends to communicate something he feels to be meaningful to others.
Yes, obviously, the self is a real phenomenon. It may not be as fundamental as Nature, given that we come from it, or as real as Love, which generates the whole phenomenon of self to begin with, but to say it isn't real or doing anything is exactly equivalent to saying my head, arms or legs aren't real. Only someone who doesn't reflect very deeply would accept that.
Kudos to you for actually questioning this belief.

And the thing with Buddhism is--there is no Creator-God figure. It's a philosophy that can be practiced with Christianity, if you so desire. (You will find many of the teachings almost identical to the main teachings of Christ). In fact, there is a church called the Self Realization Fellowship that is a hybrid of Buddhism and Christianity. I know many members of this church. www.yogananda-srf.org/Aims_and_Ideals.aspx#.VXJ8yM9Viko
If you make your question more specific, maybe I can answer it better. I'm no expert on Buddhism--I am a secular humanist with an interest in philosophy.
