Selfie Dysmorphia: How social media filters are distorting beauty 🤳🏽

- "Selfie culture" has thrived with the rise of smartphones, with many people striving to capture every exciting (and some not so exciting) life moment to share on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.
But these ambitions have led to some celebrities, social influencers and regular users relying on filters and other apps to amplify their photos and exaggerate reality - even going as far to significantly augment their own appearance in order to share their "best self."
These habits can lead to serious physical and mental health issues, termed "selfie dysmorphia." The phenomena was coined by a UK cosmetic surgeon who saw a rise in patients seeking treatments that would distort their natural features to reflect the appearance they could achieve with apps like Facetune.
What drives a young person to turn their digital-self into reality through surgery? Aalia Adam explains the common pressure to look perfect on social media and the concerns around selfie dysmorphia.

Social media has people losing their minds! I, personally, do not think I look good in photos, so I rarely post any on social media; however, I believe the mirror and I'm satisfied with my appearance, offline...lol!
i believe the mirror also it’s closer to how we actually look because it’s 3d and we’re constantly moving on the other hand, photos aren’t 3d and it can’t capture just like how the human eye perceive things, the mirror is correct but we could still be flipped. i took a picture of my cousins and the camera made their faces look more darker and showed more detail i never noticed on their faces before
Same sis
@Stevenson 💀💀💀
Same!
When your whole face is a fraud!!!
Not everyone is beautiful. As a society, we need to become okay with that. I don't recognize anybody nowadays. No bueno.
I'm seeing a lot of comments along the lines of 'well this is just women being women' and it's honestly gross, this is about how this technology can literally give you unhealthy expectations for the way you look.
It really does. It’ll have you scrolling back in your camera roll and forgetting that those pictures had a filter on them. You start to gas yourself up “reminiscing”about how “cute” you were… Creating distorted memories with baseless inflation of the ego. Then it all hits you when you look in the mirror and convince yourself you need to spend BIG$$ on expensive “self care” creams.
When in reality all you needed to do in the first place was love yourself enough to not even joke around with filters (even if you don’t share them) and do the real work on self care on the inside not the easy way out with makeup365 & filters.
(Btw my avatar is a SC filter 😅)
My favourites are those who filter the photo so much they are almost unrecognisable, then insist it is a 100% natural photo.
Same with these 'no makeup' selfies where they are wearing a ton of makeup it's just skin tone makeup lol.
It's just so bizarre.
This Is So True When I Use Filters Faces On My Snapchat My Skin Looks So Clear And Smooth Its So Creepy!!!.
Yeah Kylie Jenner put black peoples lips into beauty trend! Lol aagh they make me sick that they get to pick apart our bodies and likeness and it's beauty when it's on them but it's "ugly, ghetto and ratchet" on us
It's amazing how many people feel the need follow and validate one another's personal lives constantly. Some social media serve really progressive purposes, while others...
Another filter for the ugly yet painful truth.
This was well researched, produced and narrated
One day the jenner/kardashian will turn out like Pete Burn and i will rejoice
How come when its videos like this, there are little to no views at all? And hardly any comments as well.
I was just thinking the same thing. Says a lot about what majority of people are choosing to focus on 🤔💭
@@bellanoire2271 HUGE facts.
This is even affecting relationships. Guys expecting women to look like these filtered versions of beauty and with botox and other so called beauty modifications; sometimes they think that it is natural!
Find a guy who does not care about social media.
Exactly! Makes me bless to be single. Too many narcissistic folks out there.
Ladies who use these filters to look 'better'. It's nothing to do with men. It's women looking up to other female celebrities that add the pressure to look 'perfect'. It's dangerous and I'm so glad I'm off IG, Facebook and Snapchat.
This is totally the other way around, men by nature are far more realistic than the average female. Men don’t have the luxury of just being able to just inject abs, muscles, height, larger wood, bigger bank accounts etc so we tend to accept life for how it is. most men would take an average female, we don’t have male entertainers telling us in every song that “I woke up like this”, flawless, independent n don’t need a man, etc.. feminism bs..I mean how many men use filters? your comment really only validated this video, because a man would date a female who has less and share his resources, rarely do you see women who would reciprocate that same level of energy.
@@Dwayne3007 facts, I stay far away from social media as possible. I’ve been off for a year now.
Oof I came here in June 2021 Bc I have noticed I don’t take selfies without filters anymore and they have gone from fun concepts to straight up airbrushing/beautifying us… and I don’t like it
6:15
If you use Snapchat/Instagram you know that is very untrue nowadays. The filters just make you look better they don’t serve any theme
Women have no problem telling men to 'man up'. Well I think its high time for women to 'women up' and gain some self confidence and realize looks are only temporary. You can't use filters forever..
This app would perfect for narcissist 😄. Good grief this is pathetic.
Lol clowns
You're not so different.

ISHOWSPEED, this song changed my life. My entire view of everything that exists in this world, in fact, even in the entire universe. I can never look at anything I know the same way again. This song represents emotions that most humans could never understand. But I can. Thanks to this song I was awakened to many things previously considered unimaginable. Thank you for this exquisite song even though I now hate my mother how can she relate to this song

Why do I look ugly in all these instagram filters? I dont put make up in real life.
okay????
Me too 😆😆😆😆I like how I look normally I don't understand the hype of making yourself look like a doggy 👁️👄👁️

I got rid of most of my social media a couple years ago, especially anything that relied heavily on photos (instagram, twitter etc) I pretty much NEVER take pictures of myself because I just don’t ever feel comfortable in them. Social media and beauty standards on the internet became way too overwhelming for me and heavily contributed to my body image issues, i forever feel like I’m not up to par with society’s idea of beautiful. I know so many other women who feel this way that are genuinely GORGEOUS and just don’t see it because everything seems to be about perfection these days.
1:07 Terrifies me
why would a 26 y ears old do botox. I do not get It!!!!
It's probably because they want to look perfect
Well it cant b helped since everyone wants to look good in a camera or videos, but using it to get money in a white lie is not a nice thing, if its just for fun why not. Anyway to those out there tht depend on beauty filter to live, " love yourselves, just the way u looks" coz honestly, i dont think all people cared of the beauty standards based on looks alone😊 theres many ppl with bigger hearts out there tht accept u just they way u are🙏😉
Filters on photos are a HUGE turn off... Everytime I see a woman using it i just skip... It's like they don't have self-confidence. You are wayyyyyy more beautiful without filters girls...
This is why I don't use filters😂What you see is what you get🤣
Its why i give big ups and praise to make up tutorials. Make up is the only way to get that near perfect face. The best tutorials r ones where they play with the lighting. Its all lighting people. Its angles lights and make up. Colors and shapes you create using make up and lighting.
No need for drastic procedures. Even filters are doing what make up would do in an extreme way, it also plays with lighting.
Youre more beautiful than you perceive yourself. ❤
5:03 hold on... you feel insecure because you watch others' image which is not even real?
Fascinating creatures
I have had dysphoria and have had it since I was very young, if I used a filter I would never be the same again as it would damage me even more greatly.
It has come to the point that we can't believe what we see anymore. 😏
This is why I don't use filters but I also hate my face as is
What's why I don't bother no more
📝💯
Megaheftigkrasses Video 👍🦧
Man I hate this.
Thinking about myself at 14... How terrible this would have been to be 14 now :-(
What's wrong with that "influencer's" lips?
This is like the next Photoshop, only it's more obvious because people can just apply it to themselves. Yet they do just that, somehow people don't realize that looking like a digital alien is really not what beauty is. And it can actually get very uncanny and creepy sometimes.
It's amazing how many sad little people you can find in the internet. 🧐
i guess the metaverse is already here; everyone is using avatar
This sounds no different than the use of make-up and cosmetics. The main difference is that one (make-up/cosmetics) has become normalized and culturally accepted without question.
Make-up is basically just paints and powders. Plastic surgery is permanent, has risks, and can affect one’s health.
Instagram is fun until you just take it in fun way not serious.
Gutes Video
So true!

According to one spiritual master, thick lips are a sign which shows that the "animal" part of that person has a strong presence. Lips should be neither too thick nor too thin.
