Pete, I appreciate the perspective you give on the Q-Strip and how you can use it to define the instruments. I am coming off of about 10 years of total DAW writing and recording and I am shifting back to real instruments and using a parametric is a focus for me. My TASCAM DP-03SD is great but I need more EQ help. Not more cowbell, more EQ!!:-D Thank you, Pete!
Wow! Finally happy they made this product. I remember calling Tech 21's custom shop years ago begging them to make a DI-channel strip-in-a-box, to which the service rep said "in house we've been drawing up the specs and people are calling in all the time asking us to build custom one-offs, so be patient."
My bass is passive. I make sure to do +10dB switch and press the HPF and LPF. My high mids are higher. Gets it a really sweet punchy mix. Love my Q-strip. Thanks for your input so I know what to do with my guitars.
Pete, I LOVE the mid boost trick to drive the front of the input! I'm using that in many different sounds and it's such a cool way to get the sound you're looking for, I like it even better than using an overdrive pedal, thank you!
Over the last year or so I have "discovered" Tech 21...the SansAmp GT2...the Double Drive...the Comptortion...the XXL....and I can't get over how fantastic they all sound! The GT2 is insane!!! And now the Q-Strip! When you used it on your 335....damn it was soooooo sweet!!!! I think I need the Q-Strip.....just how to tell the wife.......HA! Thanks for all you do for opening up our minds and ears to cool sounds! ROCK ON MR. THORN!!!!!
It appears that you can turn a plain old Precision bass into a Chris Squire (Yes) sounding Rickenbacker. And you can reclaim your space in the mix as a guitarist without treble boosting or overdoing distortion. This stompbox is excellent. I swear by Tech21. And there is no one as fit as you to detail how it can be used. Bravo again, sir with another great video!
Love your demo's! You play so well and build and build to an explosive ending! I always learn what each effect can do and how I could use it! Thank you sir!
Another great video Pete... thanks! I really appreciate your in depth explanations and attention to detail...oh yeah, and that phenomenal playing and musicianship 👍🏻
I'm torn between these two. This is cheaper than a used empress but it's not fully parametric then again all the extra input/output options would make some interesting blends. Might just get a boss pq4 n keep it simple. What's making you consider this when you already own the empresses?
Lots of great knowledge being dropped here! Thanks again for freely sharing your experience. You really were getting the most out of each instrument to my ears. I was wondering, are you equalizing for the best tone of the guitar by itself or are you looking for the best tone with regards to the mix. I find sometimes those can be mutually exclusive and difficult to balance.
I had a feeling that was the case because all of your recordings allow me to focus on each separate instrument if I concentrate or just lay back and hear the totality of the composition. I tip my hat, good sir, that ain't as easy as it sounds!
Pete you have become a really good educator. You convey the information in a clear, concise and easily digestible manner. Really invaluable piece of gear. I wonder which one is better ? This, or the Empress Parametric unit ?
Pete I don't think you could make a bad demo. Informative and interesting at the same time and the exact opposite of that schill Rob Chapman, great video bro.
Hi Pete. Great video I'm just as to why you chose to put the pedal in between the amp and speaker. Using an IR I guess there wouldn't really be a way to run the pedal after speaker but wouldn't that be how a traditional recording desk would have been utilized? Essentially the eq after the amp has been mic'd? Does your way cause the eq to react differently?
Would you consider the Q-Strip as an insert for mixing in Logic? Say, for drums or something. Way cheaper than even any 500 series eq, could build a cool makeshift console out of that.
Angelo Boltini late reply! You might need some kind of reamp box, I asked a similar question to TECH21 and seems like they hadn’t had that application in mind.
Great music and sounds!! I'm not understanding how this is "fully parametric" when there are no Q controls - the mid-bands are semi-parametric, yes-no?
Hello Pete, I asked about how to how to connect my mic into my q-strip in your chase bliss reverb premiere. Still don't understand well. I have an SM7B with cloud lifter into my audio interface. Would like to use the q-strip and prolly a compressor pedal to process the mic. Should I plug the clud lifter into the pedals or route from the interface? Still don't know what mic/line level means in practical ways.
Hi Pete! your vids are awesome, but I've wanted to make a suggestion for a long time: can you slow down the moving texts at the bottom? they're unreadable at normal speed
I thought it might have just been me, the scrolling text was quick, I was having trouble focusing on each word. Might need to visit an optometrist. I'm getting old :P
Pete Thorn, I didn't catch where the lows roll off on the acoustic guitar with the hi-pass filter. Also, if you were eq'ing live would it be the same setup? Our acoustic player is experiencing some boominess in FOH and monitors.
Pete, just curious on your opinion of EQ before IR vs After IR? To me it seems it would be more accurate (or more real word) to EQ post IR as the tone is then more like an actual amp vs the shrilly full frequency tone coming out of the SRL. Do you think you get the same result either way?
I hear a lot of engineers say to cut more often then boost. With that telecaster the boost seemed pretty drastic. What's your thoughts on the boost less cut more? Eq is so elusive to me as there are so many factors. Like, you could eq it by adjusting the mic or rolling the tone knob down. Or choosing a different amp. Is it 1. Get average tone per instrument, then 2 us eq to push each instrument to sit in the mix? That's what I usually do, but making the decisions before going into the a/d seems like just tons of experience.
There's truth in everything you say! I recommend cut before boost, as a general rule, especially when trying to make stuff "sit in the mix" and when clarifying things. But boost is needed to fatten things, make things cut, etc
Will this do what a Furman PQ3 does? Newbie here to recording gear, the red knobs on the Qstrip parametric EQ seems like a cool coincidence to the old Furman Rack EQs Dimebag and Warren DeMartini used... I’m not trying to pay 400-500 for a “vintage” janky old furman unit. So this would be cool.
Any engineer will say that you can do much more with analog EQ than plugin eq. Like some of the real console eq you can do almost anything you want and it won't ruin the sound, where with daw, its so easy to ruin whatever you're doing.
Awesome demo Pete...Are you still using the Ownhammer Blackback M IR? Do you think a tool like this would be good to help refine your sound with IRs and playing quietly at home or recording?
Sonicblue1922 I bought the OwnHammer Class A Duo pack last night, one of the few Celestion Gold IRs I've been able to find. Really dig it, sounds very close to my real Gold. Pete if I may ask what are you recording at, 44, 48, 96? Great demo as always!
Will this work on a Fender Deluxe Reverb at bedroom volume, like 95-99dB? Here's a discussion about this video twitter.com/MANOMACHINE/status/1352544320767860740
7:20 "It has a ash body that makes it sound kind of scooped" What? Did you hold the body of the Bass in front of the speaker? Come on, Pete! You can't possibly think the ash body is causing this? Maybe it's the pick ups or your rig. Or MANY possibilities throughout your rig. But the ash body? You're so intelligent and knowledgeable about all of this stuff, normally. I REALLY enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!
I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it! Listen man, your comment is sorta condescending- implying I'm not being intelligent. If what you are suggesting is that you don't think wood affects tone- you would be harboring a belief that is 100% polar opposite to mine, but also, for example, John Suhr. Also, Gil Yaron..Leo Scala and any number of builders out there. WOOD DEFINITELY AFFECTS TONE. 100%. Absofuckinglutely. And it has predictable qualities, depending on the species and variety of wood we are talking about. Now, for some audible proof- watch this vid at 4:15- can you hear the difference between the ash T and the alder T? All other things are equal. Identical guitars electronically, and identical setups. If you can't- then I don't know what to say. But, if l;ike probably most folks, you can- you'll notice some qualities typical of ash/maple- scooped mids and sparkling highs- and alder/rosewood- fuller mids overall. ua-cam.com/video/HOOpAw5fT3E/v-deo.html
Pete Thorn Yeah, I don't agree. In the sense that it would make such a difference that you would have to EQ one way or the other. It doesn't make sense to me that the wood in a solid body guitar could make that much difference. My stance on that debate is this: I DON'T CARE. If I find a guitar that sounds great, I buy it. If not, I don't. But I have never put ANY thought into species of wood, as far as it would effect my purchase or not purchase. I don't even want to get into this conversation... For the love of god, I have seen people become enemies over it! How about we agree to disagree and drop it. I really do like your channel. I think it's great!
(btw, Your time stamp leads back to this video and not this goo.gl/F7r6Ku as intended) What if you were subconsciously picking with more attack to bring out the brightness you expect to come from the ash vs the alder? Too many variables there. ;) Jokes aside, I feel like the difference in wood is negligible and the difference it does make comes down to how it feels resonating in your hands. That is what I pick a guitar on. The rest can be tweaked by strings, pickups and picks (not to mention everything between the guitar jack and speaker cone to room you're listening in) to the point that the wood doesn't even matter at that point. I had a mahogany strat that sounded just like.. a strat. The fact that it has to be discussed, tested, argued or proved just means there isn't a big enough difference in the first place to bother. Old habits die hard and every industry has it's snake oil. Great review on the pedal though!
Everything matters. You're talking to a guy here that has a signature amp, guitar, pickups- I think about basically nothing else than this stuff. Maybe to my detriment- but I have a 1 track mind- for 35+ years. And I can tell you, unequivocally that wood affects tone. Suhr- one of the legends in this biz- I mean, he's one of the greatest guitar builders EVER. He will sit and talk about this stuff- and then walk you through his factory and literally show you- the differences in tone. Why he selects certain woods for certain qualities and why he thinks others are BS or deficient. My black Suhr, the pronto for my sig model- I picked between about 10 fingerboard blanks, and part of the process was, yes- tone tapping them and listening. Did you listen to the video? Can you hear the difference between the 2 guitars? Because they are identical other than the wood. If u can't hear it then, ok, maybe you shouldn't care. I can hear it as clear as a bell and no I didn't play different to influence the tone. If you don't believe me, fine but I've never met a guitarist I consider great or a builder that doesn't think wood affects tone- it's absurd honestly. Sorry.
Manual says it has a Q of 1? Q is not adjustable. I think I would prefer something more surgical. As loaded with features as it is, it's a shame the Q is so wide. Thanks for the video though. Good luck at Guitcon.
I have that EQ built in to my GT-100. And its shit. Not the EQ, GT-100 is. Making good sound on that junk is imossible. Changing a litle setting is not just turning a knob. I have to go through a hell of menus to find it first, and then choose a knob in the menu i want to turn then turn it.. Thats shit. Thats actually the worst shit BOSS ever made GT-100 and GT1000. What a fucking junk. Why didnt they just throw a small EQ on the board instead of building it in to software menu.
Pete, I appreciate the perspective you give on the Q-Strip and how you can use it to define the instruments. I can't go anywhere without my Q/strip. Such a powerful tool for tone shaping
That 335 is the best sounding guitar I've ever heard. Love it when you bring it out.
An eq pedal like this should be the first thing on your pedalboard.
It can transform your rig into anything (almost).
Great informative video Pete!
How about putting it on the very end of signal chain as global eq???
@@RadityoPramAdi Even better, Radityo.
About time the 335 returns !!!
Steve Sterlacci the 335 sound in this video is DELICIOUS! The pedal really enhanced it.
Yeah...whenever the 335 appears it just sounds killer.
Really informative video on EQing, not just a pedal demo. Brilliant stuff.
Thanks!!!
Pete always turns in a great and detailed review! Sounds great. The Q strip is now on my radar.
My bass is passive. I make sure to do +10dB switch and press the HPF and LPF. My high mids are higher. Gets it a really sweet punchy mix. Love my Q-strip. Thanks for your input so I know what to do with my guitars.

Thanks for saying, and watching/listening!
Pete Thorn ...I really learn a lot from your videos too! Always look forward to new ones 👍
Pete Thorn gonna buy it for my studio. Great demo. Looks like the pedal sticks to tape well. :)
Gosh I love the intro jams Pete.....just awesome!
Thanks!!!
"The Management"... Plays well with guitars and is funny! Good stuff, Pete.
15:35 I love that Friedman's style bend! Thanks for the video.
The best demos Pete, always so informative. I learn a great deal about "how" to use equipment and pickup some great licks along the way. Thanks!
One of the most informative videos I have seen in ages - no surprise I suppose, but thanks for putting this video together. Extremely helpful !
Pete you're such a knowledgable guy! I always learn something I don't know from your video. Thanks!
PETE !!! you da man ! Thanks for this... every time I watch one of your videos your hair is different.
Must take hours to put these vids together Pete, Thanks, definitely makes understanding how to record guitar tone easier (and bass for that matter)

That was amazing what it did for the 335!! Cool demo...Thx!
Loved the intro song! Great tones! Also enjoyed the lesson on the equalizer. Thanks!
Empress paraeq and qstrip it's time to compare those two. I owned empressparaeq and it sound sweet.
Yes! Do know the benefits of the equipment vs a jhs cover preamp? I'm stumped in this area
How much did the Empress eq cost? Which one is better?

Killer Sounds and Tones!
Great work Pete! Thank You.
Love the 335 part!
I just don't know how u do it pete, always new songs and Lead lines. I alway wind up play the same shit. As always very impressive.
Very informative video Pete!
Was thinking of a Benson preamp to fatten up my quilter amp, but this is interesting. Anyone opinions appreciated.
Pete is amazing - love the demos!
Great sounding pedal.---Gotta get it !!!
Hey Pete, many thanks for the video! As I can see you used HPF on bass and electric guitar too, but forgot to mention it :)
Sounds like just the box I've been looking for to shape up my 12 strings.

Killer opening song!
As always, a brilliant demonstration. Thank you :-)
thanks!
How did you go into from the acoustic guitar mic into the q strip? The q strip only has 1/4 inch inputs?
Oh ok from the preamp. Nevermind
The 355 sounds killer in the mix.
Nice seeing the 335 again
Great tones!
Nice video - really liked it. Im contemplating getting one of these boxes - just curious; Are the knobs metal?
Awesome Pete. Is that an updated PT amp behind you in silver, or simply a faceplate option?

Hi Pete! your vids are awesome, but I've wanted to make a suggestion for a long time:
can you slow down the moving texts at the bottom? they're unreadable at normal speed
Pause the video occasionally ?
that's precisely my point! pausing ruins the experience IMHO ;)
I thought it might have just been me, the scrolling text was quick, I was having trouble focusing on each word. Might need to visit an optometrist. I'm getting old :P
OK! Good advice! I do think about it but everyone's different when it comes to reading that stuff comfortably- I will slow it down in future videos
Thanks a lot!!
color = Neve 1073. If it comes close I'm all in.
cool, thanks. Can this be run through the effects loop as a constant EQ for the amp?
Pete Thorn, I didn't catch where the lows roll off on the acoustic guitar with the hi-pass filter. Also, if you were eq'ing live would it be the same setup? Our acoustic player is experiencing some boominess in FOH and monitors.
So informative! Thanks Pete!
Question: Are you always going out of your amp into a torpedo live? (When you use an amp).
BakerImageGroup I think said Suhr reactive load box and IR in the software for this.
Thanks Tim, yes, I guess my question should have been, "Do you mic amps anymore?".
Gteat idea, would be awesome if it could be used as a hardware insert in a DAW.
Pete, just curious on your opinion of EQ before IR vs After IR? To me it seems it would be more accurate (or more real word) to EQ post IR as the tone is then more like an actual amp vs the shrilly full frequency tone coming out of the SRL. Do you think you get the same result either way?
how do you deal with original music/content protection for this channel? any suggestions or can you do a video?
Really wish it was parametric and not semi parametric. I’m trying to notch out a spikey high mid freq in my vintage 30s. (Fx loop of amp)
I hear a lot of engineers say to cut more often then boost. With that telecaster the boost seemed pretty drastic. What's your thoughts on the boost less cut more? wonder about that as well, but basically I would say yes, considering it works also like a booster / preamp like the furman does
I clicked on the link above and it said "page not found" OK so how much does this eq cost?
damn son nice guitarring!
Have you tried using a Jazz Bass to get a more mid present tone?
buying 8 of it and making a "analog mixer" :)
Is there a box like the Q-Strip that has all that plus storable presets?
So the low and high knobs don't control the High pass and low pass filters?

This video is the very definition of tweaking your tone.
The word you were searching for is "tactile", as opposed to the virtual world i.e. plug-ins.
That's it!
