I noticed that if Homelander doesn't focus on what he wants to hear then he just won't, or if he's preoccupied. It's the same flaw with the spidey sense, if Spider-man doesn't anticipate a threat then when it tingles, he sometimes fails to dodge away because it just doesn't make sense for something to be there. Same in HL and Hughie's case, he just didn't expect someone to be in the vents.

Might have been difficult to pan between homelander and hugh quickly but likely he ran the moment the sweat drop on homelander, in this case every second counted for Hughie and then close to being caught and killed a train saved him. Don’t really see the plot armor but I do see luck

I assume since they're industrial and keep a massive ice rink cooled that maybe it makes more sense lorewise.
They are called "Return Air Vents". They tend to be larger than supply air vents because they collect warm expanded air from multiple rooms. In a large ass auditorium like this that has a lot of people generating heat you're going to want an effective method of pulling all the heat away from the ice rink.
TBH the returns may even be too small. Even if it is in a corridor like that.

My speculation is that these air vents work by pulling air from inside so it's quite impossible for Hughie's smell to reach homelander's nose.

The character development within this series is astounding. Notice homelander’s hair from beginning to current season 4. It literally tells the tale of a man going from fresh vitality to endearing mid life crisis. No struggle, to continuous struggle. Pure brilliance.

i love how when he flies through the vent, the metal just folds like paper as he turns to look. he didn’t have to try at all to bend it, it was like some tinfoil was in his way

It's interesting to see his hair go from a right-handed man 's swoop to the side to straight back. There's a common visual element in media where the way of hair is parted is indicative of whether or not you're a villain and has he descends further into being more obvious. It becomes more slick back which is alien not even at the slick to the other side

I always thought homelander could've heard hughie or at least his heartbeat in the vent. Maybe it would've been realistic if the vent was on, therefore overshadowing his noises and smell. Unless homelander's enhanced senses are turned on and off rather than being passive. Could be that he didn't use them because he thought he didn't need them at the time. But this being a show, there's always some plot conveniences lol
I'd like to think its controlled in a way, he pays attention to singular sounds earlier in the show "her hearts pounding like a rabbit". If he just heard every little tiny sound all the time it would probably make it very hard to do so. If he did, he'd probably be able to tell there was an extra heartbeat but that also makes me think he has to actively pay attention for him to hear THAT kind of stuff vs very loud sounds being audible from miles away

I think the point of this is to explain why his lasers were missing. If he can't see hughie directly, he has to guess where he is. If he was behind concrete, homelander would have hit him first try

we were shown in the first season just like superman he has to focus his hearing. he doesn’t just hear everything when he wants to or else he’d just be getting bashed with noises. it’s not that hard to understand

Duct is a lot of times made out of galvanized steel. Galvanization is a protective ZINC coating (the coating is on the inside and outside). So makes sense that he couldn’t see him. But the Hollywood part is being able to crawl through ducts at all, and the fact that it was quiet in the duct, that shit is loud AF when you are messing around with it.
