NBA Referee Admits Missed Call And Bounces Back

- Tyler Ford missed a call on a Jayson Tatum drive and admits it to him before bouncing back by calling a great rest of the game. I also dive into what I have noticed from an officiating standpoint and wonder if these were the reasons that NBA officiating can be so poor at times. Stay tuned for more and like & subscribe if you enjoy content like this. I admit the thumbnail is clickbait lol

As a ref myself, I can tell that referees are taught to rotate after each shooting foul, especially if there are only 2 ref's at the game (more common in the lower level games)
This is a very important moment to refereeing, since you don't sit at one spot for the whole game. Each Ref has his own zones that he's responsible for, in those zones only he should call, this goes for out of bound lines, fouls, etc.
And refs are also told/trained to have the right distance to the action. Especially when you are under the basket and you are standing to close, it is likely to miss a call. Because of the limited field of view you will miss out on all the off ball stuff.
find the most random stuff to talk about but it's always enjoyable and informative! Nice to see some human interactions with refs as we often forget they're only human.
I love a ref that can admit that they fucked up. It happens, they’re humans. I only have an issue when refs straight up catch attitudes for their OWN mistakes. The latter happens more often than the former sadly. Good insight
Players deliberately lie and complain based on that lie all the time too. That is why players have no credibility to the refs.
@@abouttime2569 yes, but when they are right, like this instance, and the refs know it, there’s nothing wrong with admitting it. Replay is there for a reason. And he most likely looked at it during the TO
@@Lotus77King I was talking about general plays as you were too. Not this specific one.
@@abouttime2569 I wasn’t disagreeing, I just referred to this instance because it was what inspired the OP.
-- just also want to add that....players are ALSO trying to sell fouls too.
Refs have to differentiate between good/bad/missed calls. So I don't get too upset when a ref misses the (right) call -- unless you are T Donaghy whose deliberating manipulating games.
One of the problems with reffing... when it's done right you probably won't notice, but when it's done wrong it completely ruins the game and EVERYONE notices.
0:53 if you look the replay, Horford's fouling on Duarte's shooting arm.
Reffing basketball is pretty hard, even at the community comp levels. It’s just so easy to miss stuff. I think that the NBA should encourage the out of zone refs to call more on paint shooting fouls. It seems like the baseline ref has sole responsibility and it’s really easy to have your view blocked
I think being up close could actually lead to seeing less. The (very large NBA) players are closer to you and blocking everything behind them. In that last clip it looked like Robert Williams (a very large NBA player) was blocking the view a bit.
Unrelated, why is that one ref "Giannis' favorite ref"? I think the joke flew right by me.
search up ‘Giannis ref’ there’s a video where he calls him out to Richard Jefferson lmfao
"After Tatum Murders Nesmith..."
😂😂😂😂
Love your content Daniel! Always a pleasure to see a notification for you video pop up every once in a while. Very insightful and fun to watch.
i havent seen a ref admit a missed call in months. its so rare that its becoming ridiculous.
Glad to see your channel doing well. Been watching since 5k and the content was always high quality.
A moving ref may be distracted by his own move paces. It might be better if they only sit on chairs and move on certain tracks around the court (controlled by buttons or arms). In that case, they can always stick on the ball/players with no eye-lid moving.... My stupid suggestion
Would appreciate a reply, been wondering this for a while! Also keep up the awesome content!
Refs change positions on the court because they need to approach the scorer’s table to call out fouls. Instead of running back to your original position, you take the zone closest to you and rotate with your counterpart(s). You get screened by the action a lot as a ref, lots of arms flying and it’s easy to miss. Easier to catch skin to skin sounds in smaller/less noisy gyms.
00:53 Isn't that a foul? Horford grabbing Duarte's Elbow while he is already on shooting motion.
I'm guessing it's because his hand was already on his elbow when Duarte went in the shooting motion, so perhaps it was to prevent foul baiting?
@@Toothspace definitely a foul. What your talking about is the difference between a shooting foul (free throws) or non shooting foul(check the ball up).
LMAO love the SB choice for showing NFL officiating
I have an uncle who officiates semi pro games and they do rotate their places throught the game. They were taught to rotate but I didnt asked him why. Ill get back once I got the answer
Tyler Ford really improved his officiating compared to when he's starting. Can't say the same to the vets like Marc Davis and Tony Brothers, they are really terrible, often times rigging the game.
I kinda like it. It means the ref gets a new line of sight for every play. So they are constantly seeing a new angle for each possession.
Love this kinda shit man
YO THATS ERIC LEWIS 💀
Do you study basketball, like doing an undergraduate or like graduate school studying under a coach? Or do you just really like basketball? Or did you play basketball in college? Ur understanding of the is amazing!!
Basketball refs are taught to rotate on foul calls.
It allows the official that makes the call to walk over to the scorer's bench to report the foul call. At which point the other officials fill the other spots leaving the one closest the score bench for the ref reporting the foul.
Most sports have one main official on the field of play, and then sideline officials. And now days then someone watching the TV screens in the replay center
You missed the Horford foul. He makes the foul when he hangs on his arm as they go up, not when he shoots.
Add another ref to the game for a total of 4 with 2 refs on the baseline is the way to go.
Don't all NBA refs have the same role/title? Except for the lead/head ref.
I thought MLB/NFL refs all have a specific role/title and typically are assigned to that role as their are different aspects to monitor on much larger playing fields. Whereas the NBA court is smaller and all duties can be shared/rotated.
Refs set play😳
It should be like soccer. The refs should use the elbows of the court and their goal should be to reach the corner and stop from there so we have two refs consistently under the basket looking in.
The other two refs should focus on returning to the other half but also, crossing half so they are in front of the play on the sidelines. This way, the refs could theoretically rest in place and always have a full view of what’s going on in game.
Tyler Ford, absolute respect, let’s a player disagree without an immediate crime of assault ejected out of the country. It’s tough and passionate out there, it’s the highest level. Just admit you maybe missed a call even if you didn’t see it and move on. How refs should be.
The positions of referee are all wrong. I never heard about you can switch rotation with the ref I know the side ref would be the side ref while the baseline ref would be the top ref and vice versa. When switching Courtside.
That first clip was 1000% a foul, not a good example of bad officiating tbh
