Just ran into this after it's worked faithfully for years. Just replaced the black... all I need is the black. Yellow and Magenta are empty but who cares right... RIIIGHT? I'm about this close from going full "Office Space" on this printer.
I've spoken to one of the companies that remanufactures cartridges and they say that Epson has included in their latest firmware updates the inability to use the printer with any ink made by any other manufacturer. My printer is now disabled if I use anything but original Epson print cartridges. The remanufacturer is refunding my purchase as there is no work around to fix this. I've used remanufactured ink for years, but can't any more. I heard there was a class action suit be brought against Epson around this.

Honestly the best option right now would probably be for everyone to dump there printers at the Epson main office and purchase a different brand. That way they can deal with the e-waste themselves. Even if you don't buy there products they really won't care until they go out of business and have to deal with the actual trash they are selling to people.
It would seem that you have to cancel the Auto Updates in the printer settings so I've read. When first setting up the printer in the latest models because in the the Auto Updates Epson include this feature to lock you in to buying their Ink. It's not only Epson but Canon and HP are doing the same thing, so I believe. This type of sneaky practice needs investigating by a Monopoly Commission.
Not one of these methods worked at all. What should I do now? It's not recognizing the yellow ink cartridge. Could it be that the cartridge is just completely empty, bone dry?
@@jkalberer Yes, it was aftermarket ink I was using. It turns out that the yellow cartridge's metal contacts were dead, and not being recognized by the printer. I got some new cartridges (after market again), and it's working fine. I got the usual message that I wasn't using genuine Epson ink, but I was able to bypass that. Yea, I know they try to prevent the user from using non-genuine inks, but I have been using EasyINK remanufactured cartridges for years with very few problems.
None of this works. My black cartridge has a few marks on the contacts and I am hoping that it can be solved with a new (cheap, aftermarket) cartridge, bought at my friendly local suppliers. What gets me is I only really need the scanner.
When turning the printer off the cartridges container will get back to its place and can't be open when the printer is turned off. How can I perform method 3?

In method 3, I can't reinstall the cartridges before plugging the power cord back in, because when I turn off the printer, the ink cradle returns to default position which makes it inaccessible.

I have a $50 epson with only black ink. I can’t print in black and white. Epson customer support said I NEED all the colors because the printer uses ALL the colors to print in black ink. I asked her is that sounds kinda dumb… she paused and said her opinion on my situation isn’t relevant and can’t comment on my situation. Basically, “it is what it is”

Printer is a disaster. This thing with the ink is intentional to get people to come back to buy ink constantly. I could not locate a Maintenance tool on the menu or on my pc printer preferences menu. Epson website very poor. This is one of those bottle type inks.

Is it aftermarket ink? Epson sends out regular firmware updates that prevent using non-epson ink. I'm finding that out right now.

Some body said laser is better but the printers cost more. All the ink printers work the same way.

Open the cover door above the cartridges and they can be removed.

Are you running windows nt or something? Windows 10 looks nothing like this and those options don't exist.
