They were definitely playing a bit slower than usual and it sounds better
This was September 2015, which means it was one of the first shows since Colbert took over as host. Pearl Jam should have sung "Better Man" and changed the lyrics to "You are the host of the Late Show now/You replaced Letterman!"

I tend to agree with you on common chords and melody being completely different, however, to claim that Rocking in the Free World came 'ages' before Polly is not accurate. Polly and RITFW literally came in the same exact year. The fast version of Polly was recorded in 1989, RITFW was first played Feb 1989 and recorded in March 1989.
