Thank you both once again. I come here to dream and watch people who are living their lives and going for it and you don't let me down. Loved it and more power to your elbow.
At my own home I have a long run of gutters on the back. The fellow who did the gutters managed to peak it slightly in the middle so that water flows to downspouts at each end. These are continuous gutters so no joints. They have worked flawlessly for over five years now. Good luck you two. Love the videos. Cheers from Vancouver Island.
My grandmother had a barn that was full of barn swallows, and while they’re pretty birds, they leave an awful mess underneath wherever they go. I don’t remember how, but eventually we were able to get them all to move out but almost immediately bats moved in. They are not as messy as the birds, but they do leave droppings everywhere, and the guano doesn’t smell nice. So you will have to seal everything very tightly because bats, like mice, can collapse their bodies and get in just about anywhere. Good luck!
Thank you both for the wonderful shout out loved the dream segment and as usual your video had me watching till the end. French people are so accommodating once meet a friendship blossom and you are friends for a long time as we know with our lovely French friends ❤❤xxx
Hi 👋, good luck with your project, Thank you for sharing your project, I am not telling you what to do, but it might be a good idea to put 2 props on your scaffolding each time, you move it and adjust it accordingly , stay safe, Phil from the moulin,
The reason the farmhouse can as you say "breathe" is more than likely that any render or mortar used would have been a lime mortar . Cement based mortars or renders don't work well with stone buildings as it traps any moisture which cannot escape hence damp in the walls
So glad you are saving the granite lintel for the door. Going to be heavy putting it in place but worth maintaining the symmetry of your lovely stone building. Rather envious of you. I simply love rural France

Good work...and well done on spending time relationship building/networking (Didn't Olivier do a lovely job at his) ...yours will be like that one day. I'm big on my recycling so love the arrangement you came to with Mnsr. Fenetre.
Regarding second hand building materials...have you found Emmaus yet. We had a holiday home near Lassay les Châteaux, so often went to the Alencon branch. Looking forward to following your progress. I'm sure it will be a beautiful home one day. I also love your background music selection for this video. Very relaxing to sit by my fire and watch you work on your lovely French homestead. Thank you.
I have been reading the comments on the website especially about the gutters being split to take the rain water to each end and maybe in the central portion of the run as you can build the height of the window and make dormers with the roof pitched and the water can flow onto the main section of the house roof. Then you can have a couple of outlets making it les of a problem to take the volume of heavy rain fall away much quicker. Dave❤
Lol! Bloke kept calling it the quagmire! And what a good scrabble word to remember! Thanks for watching and once we get the gutters running in the right direction I think we will be in really good shape! (Mrs. Bloke!)
I've just found your channel and have been binge watching.. I wish you both well super video's. We bought an old finca in the countryside in Spain, it didn't work out after 12 summers we flew from northern Ireland. We locked up and left for 9 months. Loved the house with it's cracked bathroom sink that didn't matter in 40 degrees heat. It was hard to find a house with a front and a back door that bothered me. But we found our dream house with two doors. Loved the Spanish people and had swiss neighbours in the next field. They are life long friends now we travelled around Spain together learning the culture and learning the history. Amazing time in our lives
Yes, winter is upon you in France 🇫🇷 but you are still making good progress with the building😊 Hot soup on a cold day, delicious and the wood fire looked nice. Keep up the good work ✔️
Yep, you explained the drainage solutions perfect Darren. I will stop worrying that your hard work would have been undermined further down the track. Gutters are perfect. The man with the windows…..Like attracts like. You’re that kind of people. Even considering how you were going to have to inconvenience mama bird and relocate her nest was honourable. This was ALL lovely to watch. Having Joseph come visit must have put your mind at ease that your work so far was done properly and you’re headed in the right direction. For some reason, I sit here writing and I’m very emotional….memories of Grandma’s farm and her lavender and lemon trees? Can smell it now. Greetings from Australia.
The scaffolding was put to good use ! Amazed how little snow you had (unless there has been some editing magic 😋) Another great week of progress with nice encounters 👍
I think I have just seen why the 'house' is a major issue, with chunks of the wall falling out. Fixing the gutters looks like a great first step that will make the whole plot work better. Thank you for the fuller explanation of your plans, I think they make sense to me, though what matters is that they make sense to you. Huge amounts of hard work ahead I suspect.. Great news about the windows, human relationships count for a great deal.
Great vlogs, binged watched to the last one. Very enjoyable. Although we live in UK, we have a place near Gorron. Owned it just over a year now. Keep them coming.
@@mrbloke yes, we had some steaks from there. Bbq'd them, very nice. We are between Gorron and Passais le Conception (D21), just of the road. Feel free to pop in if passing
Hello to the both of you, wow doesn't your rental and your farmstead look so majestic in the light dusting of snow, but also good to see you keeping warm. Your farmhouse is beautiful now and I so can't wait to see what you do with it as I know it's going to be awesome, especially as you love to recycle things, the doors you were able to salvage are absolutely beautiful too. Take care and keep warm 😃👌🤟
Ha Ha! At least with the freeze you do not have mud! Get the wood burner installed as soon as possible. You should be using the tractor bucket to move all the heavy bits, once you break the stickiness you can lift them much easier!
I've not read all the previous comments so I may be repeating something already mentioned. If you use cement/concrete to build or apply to the walls you will almost certainly end up with damp issues. Cement traps moisture which you will inevitably get regardless of your moisture barriers which will slow things down but won't stop it completely. Really, you should consider using lime mortar which allows the walls to breathe. Your mate Budo should be able to give you much more advice, they have used lime mortar in the re-pointing of their walls which Tracey made a really good job of.
We are getting such conflicting advise!!....We think it makes sense to put cement render and bitumen below the floor level and lime render on the outside wall? More research is necessary!!
Bitumen will provide a barrier against moisture. Definitely get more advice with regards to cement render. There are plenty of you tube videos by people removing cement render in order to solve damp problems and replace it with lime. And cement render can be a real pain in the arse to remove if you have to. As I mentioned before, your mate Budo is probably your best place to start. @@mrbloke
I am so happy for you to be building relationships. The doors and windows... well... that is just fantastic!! I am the same way. I would rather buy and used and old one with history and beauty than a prefab one. It will save you money to spend on other needs. That would be so great to have an extra hand. Rest easier now, things are going to be just fine. Best. good about the eavestrogh and the drainage aground the house. Its happening!!!
Great blog It’s so nice to see the sun shining for you at long last even though it's cold. Much prefer cold and sunny to wet, cold and cloudy. It lifts the spirits. Great that you're starting to make local connections.
Perhaps you can establish a second hand market for the windows and doors from the man you developed the relationship regarding the old doors and window's. In a partnership with him, could help you with funding, there must be others in France looking to do the same as you, preserving heritage and charm in renovations.
Sunshine! How does one invite the swallows to vacate the premises? An herb garden sounds wonderful. I would love to grow and dry herbs for my kitchen. France has a lot of "yard sale" type brocantes. I guess you can buy darned near anything if you know where to look. Is bitumen the same thing as tar? It's a great waterproofing for walls at or below ground level, especially for brick. Good job on the gutters and the scrubbing! Hopefully, you'll get one of those weird breaks in the weather. We call it a false Spring. Temps go up to nearly 70° for no apparent reason and everyone runs out and preps gardens before the next snowfall! Have a good week! Blessed Be!
Love to know the name and location of the window place you mentioned. We are in the process of buying a little place in Normandy and we will need a few windows and doors. And I'm sure could repurpose some of those old windows. My first thought was a cold frame. Much better to re-use and re-purpose rather than sending to landfill.
Not sure what you’re looking forward to the most but I look forward to the day when you’re not knee deep in mud - it just makes everything so much more difficult.
7:58 I’m guessing that the owner will have done more research on this chest, but I wonder what makes him think it’s a ship’s carpenter’s tool chest specifically: I’ve seen a few old tool boxes over the years, and they’re all similar in layout - at first glance, could have belonged to any type of woodworker. Very nice piece.
I think it was the side handles that indicated that it was for the ship - but I am not sure. Budo at @FrenchFarmhouseDiaries would be the go to for this info! He is full of knowledge! Thanks for watching! ❤️ (Mrs. Bloke)
Just found your channel, and we think it's great. we are doing the same as you, and our property is not far from you, but we are still living in the UK at the moment so we cam only get over in work holidays keep up the great work and videos ❤❤
I’m not sure about the cost of gravel, but have you thought about getting a load dumped near the entrance to the property since you have the tractor you could easily spread it and then in future when you have deliveries, they could pull right in.
Hi see you are wearing gloves while you are working, may I make a suggestion invest in a two wheel wheel barrow with inflatable tyres this will make life so much easier. As a qualified joiner site manager on fit outs and pre accident joinery business Owner with a lot a staff (approximately 30-40 depending on season) weaning out the bad and keeping the good. A lot of my time would be taken up with heath and safety ? so please stop climbing up on the outside of your tower to get too the platform which a looks a little on the Lowe side as it’s best to be working at chest level with a cross bar central of your back and if you can buy out rigger’s to attach to the scaffold you have this would make me so happier to see you working at height’s Enough with me being an ares keep up your hard work and I look forward to your future work. (Sorry for going on but when you have worked in construction from an early age to 60+ you have seen it all )you are such lovely people I would like to see you complete your project to the end God bless and good luck.
I know this will be of little consolation, but at 7:30 a.m., it is 50 (F) in up-country Kauai. As a hard-won reward for your work, I suggest you lay in a stock of Domaine Faiveley "Clos Des Myglands". Best wishes and much aloha.

We were just discussing this, and we need to do more research - we think lime may be more breathable? We will hit UA-cam university tomorrow! Probably (for the sake of time) do the cement/sand for under the sub floor wall area, but for the outside, the lime - all ongoing discussions! Thanks for watching! (Mrs. Bloke)
Hi if you're looking for second hand stuff Emmaus is quite good for it or have a look in la brocante wich is a bit more expensive but could find nice extraordinary pieces, good luck,
Thanks! We have hit 2 Emmaus in the area, we got some nice dishes and will go back for sinks and things of that nature! Thanks for watching! (Mrs. Bloke!)
When you are looking out your front door or window, you guys are on a very sloped ground. It may not be visible now but in the future it looks like you guys need to do some terraces. It will help to keep water off the house and if you put French drains around the house to lower ground like a pond? you might be able to have the runoff go it.
I have been enjoying your channel up to now and even occasionally try to leave useful comments. Sorry guys 8 minutes in and had to stop watching. The music is very disconcerting. Volume going up & down and drifting across spoken parts. I have Misophonia and have great difficulty trying to sort out music & speech and quickly changing levels. Oh well. ATB regards from the UK
We completely agree - too much this week :/ and we had already started the 20 hour upload process and therefore no more edit, and there wasn't too much we could do about it. We made a note to steer clear of this in the future. The show is about the property and the place and the change and the beautification, not us! Stay tuned!!! Thanks for watching! ❤️ (Mrs. Bloke)

@@mrbloke Yes, could be: they look like they might slot into something in order to secure the chest on a ship, something like that.
Just found your channel, and we think it's great. we are doing the same as you, and our property is not far from you, but we are still living in the UK at the moment so we cam only get over in work holidays keep up the great work and videos ❤❤
Thank you so much❤️Best of luck with your remodel
I’m not sure about the cost of gravel, but have you thought about getting a load dumped near the entrance to the property since you have the tractor you could easily spread it and then in future when you have deliveries, they could pull right in.
We definitely need gravel!
So which house did you buy ? I would kindly suggest more cheerful music. Gif bless you and your project ❣️🥰💕🙏🏻💕🏡
Thanks for the tips Dave. We will be very careful❤️
I know this will be of little consolation, but at 7:30 a.m., it is 50 (F) in up-country Kauai. As a hard-won reward for your work, I suggest you lay in a stock of Domaine Faiveley "Clos Des Myglands". Best wishes and much aloha.
The Mrs absolutely deserves that bottle. ❤️
150 quid 20 years ago, still using it
Any history from WW2 you’ve learned of as yet ? . That was a VERY busy area after June 6th 1944 . Loving the series , so nicely put together .
Actually yes, and I would like to include it in next weeks video - Olivier was so knowledgable and had some interesting facts we want to share about the war! Stay tuned and thanks for watching!! (Mrs. Bloke!)
@@mrbloke Thanks ‘MrsBloke’ :) we will be in Normandy around the 6th of June , LOADS of us going over from the uk with our ww2 vehicles to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D Day , look out for a Willys MB jeep ‘Bella’
Oh wow, so cool!! Please keep us informed!
I'm in A new subscriber 🙌 just watched nearly all your videos 👌🇺🇸🇬🇧🍷
Wow! Thank you...Welcome!
j'ai bien aime regarder.....tres rafraichissant....
Merci beaucoup❤️
How about a greenhouse at the end of the house where it gets alot of sun ?
Have you thought of lime render instead of cement render?
We're doing French drains to a soak away👍
Here in the States we use Dri-Lock for extra moisture protection on block walls. Is that appropriate in France?
Thank you. I will look into it👍
To my knowledge, swallows use the same nesting site repeatedly, just build upon existing site! I could be wrong mind you. 😉🤷♀️
How did they charge for the fire wood? Weigh the car before & after? (Like they do here in Ireland at the dump)
We loaded the car and the owner came and measured - so by meters square. It cost about 80 Euros for that load, thanks for watching! (Mrs. Bloke)
You need a trailer, I built an empire a trailer😂
Yes we do!!! (Mrs. Bloke!)
I would say remove the nest now because birds nest in the spring. It will be harder to move it with eggs in.
Nice video, but the music was a distraction and depressing.
Noted!
It's nice music but more for getting a massage. 🙂
Is Energetics a word?😂
?....I believe it is yeah!!
Sorry to hear that. Will drop the background music even more in future videos. Thanks for the intel...Best wishes.
We hear you - we are learning, and we will work on this for our future videos🙏😉 (Mrs. Bloke!)
Please dont go down the road of so many channels, in front of camera talking.
For the most part your films are good.
❤️ (Mrs. Bloke)
@@mrbloke Thank you.
@@mrblokeI thought it was a good mix. Front facing allows us to get to know you better!
Love what you did with the fence and love the blue doors from @chubbsinfrance
Thank you
