von Steuben was kicked out of Prussia because he was strongly suspected to be gay. He first went to France, where he was recruited by the colonies. He trained the continental army, taking a loosely organized band of rabble and turning them into a formidable fighting force (as he was trained to do, in the Prussian tradition). If it weren't for him, the continental army might've been completely pasted by the British.
So the US has a (probably) gay man to thank for its existence. True, he might not have been driven out of Prussia if it weren't for homophobia, but that's all the more reason to preach tolerance. Prussia's loss was the US's gain, and probably allowed the nascent nation to survive.

The better trained and more experienced British troops and their ships would've mopped the floor with the cobbled together militias we had at the time. Instead, we had viable combat teams on land and in the sea that helped make it possible.

    • @05Matz
      @05Matz Рік тому +1

Because they've been told all their lives that people telling them they're wrong (or even suggesting they COULD be wrong) in their prejudices is an attack on, well, them _personally_ but also 'everything-that-is-good' (using some symbolic attachment like "American Values" or "Capitalism" or whatever). They bought it so heavily that they immediately consider anyone who makes them question things "not a Real American" and in fact is viewed as an outside attacker.
Unfortunately, I don't think most of them can be saved any more. They can only be... mitigated and removed. _Survived_ , I suppose.

For those who haven't looked up what log cabin republicans are:
The term “log cabin republicans” refers to a political organization of Republicans who support LGBT+ equality and civil rights. The name is inspired by Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president, who was born in a log cabin and who championed the emancipation of slaves and the preservation of the union.
The organization was founded in 1977 in California as a response to the Briggs Initiative, which attempted to ban homosexuals from teaching in public schools. The group received support from Ronald Reagan, who opposed the initiative and later became president.

The Log Cabin Republicans, in the 2000s, started endorsing anti-gay presidential candidates (Romney and GW Bush). They also stuck with their 2016 endorsement of Trump after he immediately started endorsing anti-gay initiatives.
The group's wavering on Liberty for LGBTQ people began during Obama's presidency. There were critical conservative principles to uphold, namely the preservation of wealth and privilege among Christian white people, and that directly conflicted with pro-gay liberal stance.

"Tailgunner Joe" was the first salvo in the republican war on sanity, education, and tolerance, and to be honest, even Ike is complicit seeing as how he built the industrial military complex he warned of, a "hey, thanks for the heads up, Dr. Frankenstein" moment if ever there was one. Funny how, at one time, some Republicans actually didn't have a problem with this. Of course, Goldwater was also a combat veteran and a "mind your own business" libertarian.
As for Reagan, he may have supported the Log Cabin Republicans, but he also bowed to political pressure from the Religious Right not to recognize the AIDS crisis because, after all, that disease is God's punishment on the gays. Only when Dr. C. Everett Koop recognized the threat to public health (outweighing Koop's own personal Christian conservatism) did the Reagan Administration take the disease seriously.

One of the difficult things about when a historical figure "rumored" to be LGBTQ is that, due to stigma (even in Ancient Greece and Rome, believe it or not) it was a very easy way to smear a political rival or someone you had personal beef with.
So sometimes it's accurate, and sometimes it isn't at all,
and we are just propagating the historical equivalent of an eighth grade bully calling someone the F word.
Sonetimes it is just a faulure to understand the culture of another time.
One Revolutionary figure who seems almost certainly to have been pretty "openly gay" by the standards of the time at least,
was von Steuben, the Prussian who came over, got the Army into shape to win the war, and spent the rest of his life here.
Look him up if you dont know him, dear reader, and you will see what I mean.
Prussians were elite military experts of the time, and his work was absolutely invaluable to the Revolution.
Someone else who would be LGBTQ+ adjacent, at least, depending on how one defines the acronym
(and also someone important to our national Independence whom we should absolutely know about)
    Is Casimir Pulaski,
a polish nobleman who was trained for the military from childhood, was an expert in cavalry and horsemanship, took part in a failed attempt to establish political change in Poland and had to leave his home as a result.
He went to Paris where he met Ben Franklin, who recruited him and sent him to the colonies.
He worked with George Washington establishing our first US cavalry,
And actually died fighting the war for Independence. He is buried here, and monuments and parks and streets are named for him.
He never married, and the only romantic relationship I know of involved letters back and forth with a young polish noblelady, but she later went on to marry someone else.
Casimir remained a bachelor for life.
But here's the thing. When his grave was excavated a few years ago, the researchers discovered that Casinir was actually intersexed from birth,
Meaning he had the XX chromosomes of a female, but had a biological and hormonal difference, most likely congenital adrenal hyperplasia, that caused him to develop like a hormonal male, in utero and for life.
So....Casimir was somewhat slight, had some bone structure details that are female, but was very masculine otherwise, had no breast development, a mustache, male pattern balding, the whole shebang.
He probably had reasonably male looking genitalia at birth, but they were likely noticeably "different".... and when he reached puberty, they were almost certainly not "functional" in the full sense of the word.
His family and he himself likely thought of him as a male with a birth defect of the genitals, rather than as a female,
And her certainly experienced male puberty and life in male hormonal terms.
And this is presumably why, even if he wanted to marry the woman he exchanged letters with, he opted to remain single and focus fully on his career.
( I am using "He" out of respect for the fact that Casimir used it, lived as and probably thought of himself as male.)

I was a medic in the Army in a time before "dont ask, dont tell" where some of the most talented soldiers i ever met lost their careers and were dishonorably discharged because of who they loved. One of my closest friends got caught off base kissing another guy by a horrible bigot in our unit. Rather than looking the other way he came back to base and screamed at everyone that would listen about how so and so was gay(not his word choice). Rather than go through the horror or article 15s and discharges and his family finding out, he went to the PX and bought as much Tylenol as he could get a hold of.
He died a painful, miserable death. He was one of the most dedicated soldiers we had and he chose death over shame. It haunts me to this day. It needs to stop. This soldier would have given his life to save others...but was forced by shame and bigotry into taking his own life before he was old enough to buy a beer.

Most of us Americans are nowhere near as wantonly ignorant as those in the party of bigoted idealism.
Indeed their entire party base at their most numerous ever in 2020 was less than 30% (74 million out of 255 million). That 30% does not represent the whole. So please do not lump the overwhelming 70%+ majority of Americans in with our bigots. No one that is not themselves a bigot deserves that.
That said, I'm sure you meant well and likely didn't mean to imply that all Americans are not educated in history. But it's the party of bigoted idealism that began destroying our public school system in 1981. It used to be #1 in the world before the 80's. Yes there is an alarmingly real problem, but one cannot correctly blame the students or the teachers for that destruction. Instead ask the question of the individual: _is it wanton ignorance, or simply ignorance?_
Not mad at you at all, just tired of people failing to use simple qualifiers, like _some, many, a large amount,_ etc.
