  • Do members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have better, the same, or worse mental health when compared to members of other religions, or those of no religion? Despite some popular narratives, what does peer-reviewed academic research find? In this episode, professor Justin Dyer takes us into what the collective scholarly publications between 2005-2022 have to say on this important subject, and the reasons why more active Latter-day Saints tend to have better mental health.
Each year, Brigham Young University Religious Education professors produce hundreds of publications on subjects related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This podcast brings this research into one place to enlighten the everyday seeker of truth. Interviewing the author, we discuss why the study was done, why it matters, and why the professor chooses to be both a scholar and a disciple. This is Y Religion: Research to Enlighten Your Mind.
Y Religion podcast episodes are available every two weeks and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, and on the web at rsc.byu.edu/media/y-religion

I have complex PTSD, and I have a host of friends with the same, or similar problems. Most (but not all) of us are converts who came from non-LDS homes, and our relationships through the church and with Jesus Christ are the only things that see us through. I have 2 other friends, besides myself, who have been kept from suicide only because of our faith. Is our mental health good? Not so much. Is it better than before we joined the church? Oh my yes. It's made all the difference in the world.

I struggle with mental health problems and have voiced my problems to my Bishop and EQ Presidedent just because it can be an obstacle in handling my responsibilities within the church. Unfortunately they are not equipped to help and often I am alone. It's not anyone's fault. It's just the way it is.

Wish I were in your ward. I understand. I have an LDS psychoanalyst who's been a huge help to me, and my Bishop did help me find him. If you don't have a therapist, I would recommend getting one. My meds make a huge difference in my life, but coping with mental health problems is the pits, no matter who you are.
