  • On June 18, 2021, Engine 1 responded to an unknown type fire located along the railroad tracks behind American Lumber Co. As they arrived on scene behind the business, they noticed an encampment fire had extended into the business' lumber storage racks. E1 Captain upgraded the incident to a commercial working structure fire and Engine 1 relocated to the front side of the business. The incident ultimately grew to 3-Alarms taxing the cities resources, requiring agencies from within and out of the county to respond for assistance on scene and for city coverage. Despite the challenging, fast growing fire, crews were able to save multiple buildings and product on the American Lumber property, including the offices and showroom.

    its incredible how fires that strong can just eat up all that water and keep on burning.

    Absolutely love all of your Incident Commanders ability to stay cool, calm and collected. Even in a large event such as this. Well done. Keep sending this great material.

    In a case like this, being the majority of the fire is outside, could a call to DNR to request a water drop or a few be warranted?

    If you're using ANY quick attack nozzle you should be using 3" hose not 2 1/2". The friction loss between the two is VERY substantial, 2 1/2" has around 3 TIMES more friction loss than 3" hose at 500gpm.

    • @donaldmorrison9940

      Do you guys use 70mm hose for initial attack? That's a lot of water and a lot of weight when you don't have a hydrant hooked up and you've got limited numbers.

    • @ffjsb
      @ffjsb 7 місяців тому

      @@donaldmorrison9940 45mm, or as known here as 1 3/4" hose is the standard fire attack hose for residences and smaller buildings. 65mm would be closer to the 2 1/2 inch hose used for heavy fire and commercial buildings. On average you're flowing about 330 gallons of water per minute, which is not a problem for most US engines which typically carry 750-1,000 gallons. That's up to three minutes of water, which will put out a LOT of fire, and give you plenty of time to hook up to a hydrant in most places. With this much fire on arrival, the first engine probably would stopped long enough for a firefighter to get out and pull off the 5" supply line, while the engine continues on laying out supply line to the fire. Another firefighter pulls the preconnected 2 1/2" line to begin the fire attack from the tank water. Usually this is enough time for the hydrant man to charge the supply line when the pump operator has broken down the line and connected it to the intake, resulting in an uninterrupted hose stream on the fire.
      76mm line offers much less friction loss, but is harder to move. It's primarily used to supply ground monitors or ladder pipes (usually in tandem)
