I asked a woman at work why she wanted to buy a new suv. She didn't even want to trade her older volvo in. She told me, "So I can put my kids in it." I told her that she could put her kids in the volvo...She only has 2 children. She then started to get mad at me. Smh, some people are just destined for bad outcomes.

You did it the smart way. So how did u trick out your car?
*****- I basically bought some carbon fiber wrap heated it over the hood and the trunk. It's not actually carbon fiber, it's actually just a sticker that's been heated on and it makes the car look cool. I've got a lot of compliments and one stranger wanted to buy it on the spot when he saw it. I also tinted the windows, and put some custom halogen front lights on it to make it look newer. On the inside I installed a radio with a flip screen and back camera with blue tooth and DVD. Then I installed some lights inside the car for effects. All of that might've costed a little over $2,500. But hey, I had the money with my $1,000 emergency fund saved in the bank. Now that I think about it, I could've invested in that money but I'm doing that now. So it's all good.

+Davis Kayumba I got a 2004 hyundai sonata .. it's a decent car for the prize. The most important thing about having a car is to make sure you maintain it. A $2500 car can last you a good while if you take care of it.
After I got out of the Navy and was unemployed for 7 months, I rode a bicycle for a year until I could pay $2500 for a 1986 Toyota Corolla in 1994. Riding that bike wasn't exactly sexy, but it kept me in pretty good physical shape.

I took public transportation for years, from childhood to early adulthood. My adult son would rather be bankrupt and drive illegally (license suspended and too many accidents). When I suggested public trans, he whined about having to walk one mile! SMH

I have a 97 f150 in almost mint condition with the latest gadgets audio and Bluetooth upgrades it's clean and I get decent fuel economy full coverage insurance isn't much it's never let me down once registration is cheap. Yet I purchased two new vehicles years ago both of witch broke down due to recall issues. I have stuck with the older f150 and will never finance nor buy a new vehicle again

Today's vehicles depend too much on electronics for me. If you have a reliable older vehicle keep it until it quits running. Among other things you don't have to buy collision or comprehensive insurance which are very expensive where I live.

I have a 18 year old truck, paid $1200. Runs fine until it doesn't. Fix it and continue on. Even if the repair bills add up to $1000 in a year, I am still a head by 1/2 in comparison to the cost of a new car payment.

I got into an argument with a friend who believes that everyone is entitled to a new car and new house. He thinks that ever person at any full time job should be able to support a family and have these things. Its completely ridiculous. Not surprisingly he is going nowhere in life.

I’m 20 years old making 32k a year. I like cars. But I like money more. I found Dave Ramsey’s videos while searching up “how to negotiate for a new car”. Thanks to Dave (and myself), I did not purchase a $25,000 car. Prevented myself from going broke. I currently drive a 07 Civic SI and it is going strong. Thanks Dave for opening my eyes.

This is the battle going on in my head every time I hear about somebody's "struggle" with debt and how expensive their car payment is ... I don't get it. I still drive the car I owned when I was 16 and am now 25. My next car will be my "new to me" mommy van in 3 years!
Legit. A van is awesome. I low key want to buy a used Honda van. A few years back, when I worked my second job, I helped load customers vehicle with furniture . And a lot had those vans. Wow . Everything lays flat. There's an immense amount of empty space . Plus the chairs are super comfy. I'm a big guy (255)and that was just amazing.

I agree. I still ride the bus. I'm on the cusp with being debit free And having babystep 1 at just about the same time!! Then I plan to get a USED car, and go on like Dave says, snowball over and over.
There is a legitimate concern about those who work far from the bus route, though. However, people have creative solutions to this, like carpooling and van shuttle services. Borrowing money for a car is not the only option at all.
MarnaCOG7 I don't think the problem is with this person buying a car, but rather buying a NEW car. I have never owned a new car in my life. There is no sense in it. In fact I haven't paid over $5000 for a car. It's possible to find a reliable used car for much, much less than a new car would cost.
Call Me Mom I was so stupid, my last semester of college I got an awesome internship offer but it was far out of town and I needed a car. The dealer told me I didn't qualify for a used car so I "had" to buy new. Stupid tax!

I paid $700 for a 1986 chevy. It's old enough to qualify for classic plates, no longer is required to get emissions tests, and still runs great.

my 2006 Nissan Altima is 10 years old, I'm trying to keep it for another several years in lieu of buying a new car.
+ir10031981 mine is 10 years old with 123,000 miles on it. I do most of the maintenance myself. keep the oil fresh, and the fluids full and it'll run forever.

One guy got on me for tricking out my Grand AM. I payed a few hundred. Later on in the year, he buys a car for $40,000. and has a car note of almost $600.
I make $90K a year, and I drive a 20 year old truck which i bought for $4000 cash. sometimes I think a newer car would be nice, then I sit down, pencil out how much my monthly payments would be, plus insurance, registration, and maintenance... then I would say no. I spend $60 a week in gas, $600 insurance a year... and $60 insurance. life is good when you can live with less. cheers!
Why not just pay cash for a new car, that’s what I did, best decision I ever made! There is absolutely nothing like a new car and if you go through your life driving trash box vehicles then your not really living

When I was making 24k I was eager to buy a new car, it felt like the most important thing in my life. Now I’m making 250k and I can’t justify such an expensive purchase. I’m still driving my old car I bought when I was making 24k. Your money priorities start to change when the things you wanted suddenly become available to you and you realized you don’t want them anymore.
I drive a 4k car, 2007, my coworkers most of them drive a 2017 and up, I make almost double of what they make, on mondays they asking me for $20 to put gas on their new car. Funny part on fridays they laugh about my old car. What they dont know is that I almost have my 3rd new house finish and paid off.

you can be laid off /fired with no notice at most jobs..remember that. i drive a 92 chevy work van i paid $800 for and it runs great. you have to be ready for that unexpected financial downturn. you dont have to be a super cheapskate but.. use common sense.

1998 that's like new, I have a 1988 Honda Accord. If I taped a nickel to it, it would double in value. Good little car though.

Honestly if you do the math, the cheapest long term answer to buying a car is to get a brand new version of a very cheap/reliable model like a corrola or elantra. It's only the cheapest option if you can afford to not finance it. You will pay virtually nothing for gas, insurance, or repairs, and even though you get a lower return on resale because of the depreciation, the exchange is that you get to keep the car longer with no issues. When I did the math on my ownership of a 10+ old car, I found that the amount I spent on repairs was greater than the cost of depreciation on a new car. And don't forget the only expense worse than repairing a car is replacing a car. The longer you put that off the better off you are.

Bought my 1st car when I was 30! That too a 10 year old one. I was using public transport before that. At times I have waited for hours for a bus. I know for sure that it is doable. I agree with Dave. The new smell of a new car wears off far too quickly. That smell really costs you a few thousand dollars though.

A relative of mine recently paid off the last of his payday loans. Then he financed a new car for 5 years. He’s 70. When I asked him why he did that, he said he hadn’t had a new car in a long time and that he didn’t want to take any chances on a used car. Some people really don’t want to stay out of debt. They’d rather take the easy way out.
Thats why you buy a good used car! Our family bought a 1998 malibu with 80k miles for around $2k. This car is in perfect shape and will last a long time, and it gets 28mpg. You dont need a "new" car.
The problem with buying a $3000 car is that you end up paying $500 a month on repairs!

That is the stupidest thing I have heard all day. I bought a car certified and etested for $1400 CAD over 4 years ago and have only spent a total of $1500 in repairs. This includes the cost of new tires, which was about $500. The biggest repair was replacing the 2 front wheel bearings which was about $500.

Amen to this! We have NEVER bought a new car and my wife and I are in our 40s and well off. It makes absolutely no sense. We only financed one car ever, a 7 y/o van that ended up being a TOTAL money pit. We just paid cash for a second vehicle and will NEVER NEVER finance a car again. Our stepdaughter on the other hand bought a new $20K car 5 seconds out of college and will likely never pay it off before she trades in to a new one in 5 years. Sad sad sad that people think they need to buy a "nice reliable new automobile" to get to work to pay for the automobile. Makes no sense.

My sister financed a £16000 car 1 year ago and decided that she was too good for the car because it was the type of car that young idiots in call centres would spend their whole years pay on and shes a nurse earning £23000 a year (18000 after tax and NI) so shes financed a mercedes A class for £26000 over 4 years so she can look better than other people. She is 25 and has no savings after putting down the deposit.
After interest on the car loan it will cost £30000 and mercedes only gave her £10000 for the 1 year old car so over 5 years she will have spent £36000 on cars which is double her current take home pay.
Hows that for stupidity?
I always thought of the UK as a very public transportation friendly place. Was a car even necessary for her to get around? I have only been to London so I don't know much about transportation outside of there.

inkey2 she got a large nail through the tyre after a few months and it cost £180 for a single 18 inch low profile tyre.
As a comparison a tyre for my clio costs £40
Its not really a good comparison because the A class has went from a horrible looking box to a nice looking hatchback but you can buy one for £6000 with 20000 miles on the clock and 3 years old.
For the decent model the cheapest with decent mileage is 14000 with 30000 miles.
If you dont care about looking better than people then you can get nice cars for waaaay less.
The best depreciation in the uk is for a vauxhall insignia which is a decent saloon but there is so many of them there is a huge list of them at £6000-8000 that have low mileage. When they are new the decent spec models are 20000+.

good advice! I got my first car used (borrowed the money from my parents) and paid them back within a year, and it still runs 10 years later! Fingers crossed for another 10 years!

I just recently did a voluntary repo/return and honestly it was actually a relief. It was so stressful trying to keep up with something I couldn't afford. I can actually breath a little and even have extra money for my household. Thank God my wife and I have another vehicle we can share. I hate that that I lost the car but i consider it as just a hard lesson. My next car will definitely be paid for in cash!
If it’s your money then you’re entitled to buy whatever you want. But there will be consequences.
Husband & I just bought our first new car, only took 36 years! Always bought used and kept them til they died. This car (Toyota Camry) will be with us for at least 10 - 15 years. We were able to retire early because we Always lived below our means. If you can't pay your credit card off in full each month then you are buying things you Can't Afford! Don't do it. The couples we know who are broke: eat fast food often, shop a lot, and always had new cars. They will be working forever and have no future to look forward to. Don't be that person. Don't try to impress others or try to make yourself (or your kids) happy by buying things you can't afford. You'll also be teaching your kids how to be broke too. ( I''ve seen that too.) Then who will take care of you when you're too old to work and you have no money in the bank? Start today on a new path!

Dave's afterburners let off at 4:00 min....I WANT a new truck but DON'T have the cash..I will have to keep driving my 97 E 350 Ford I bought in 99 with 43k on it , which now has 362k.... Still runnin strong. Other things to Invest in other than cars. Like my family's future.

I was doing Dave Ramsey at age 19 in the Army...then I THOUGHT that my paid off car with 70,000 miles wouldn't get me home to see my girlfriend 9 hrs. away. Was scared I'd break down along the way, so I financed a car much like the article at 18% interest. Dumb...dumb...dumb. Then I got married and had a baby, and needed a bigger car. Rolled negative equity into a new SUV...and the cycle just continued. So stupid.

I work with a guy who borrowed money off family and took out loans to buy a sport car because it was worth 60K and he got it for the bargain price of 50K.

Honestly, a 1990 4Runner is a much cooler car than a new Honda CRV. A 1994 Civic is way cooler than a new Ford Focus. New cars are pretty lame for the most part. There’s comes a pride of keeping an old car going.

I have used a bicycle for transport at many times in life. When I was in college and working full time I rode my bike across town 5-6 days/week to get to work. I also used a bike to commute to work for over 5 years because work was less than 2 miles from my house and though I made $70k/yr it made no sense to drive. If you are truly broke, not owning a car is a GREAT way to save money. The only catch is you should consider getting a living situation near your employment if that is feasible.
I get why people want new cars these days, saftey is one for a start. The safety side of cars, especially European models like Audi/BMW are absolutely fantastic!!

Find a car auction in your area, if you or you have a friend that has mechanical skills that's a plus. Brought one new car in my life, been there done that.

Everyone forgets owner expense plus taxes attached: Personal property tax, Registration + tax, License fees + tax, Inspection + tax, Insurance + tax, Mechanical Maintenance +tax (parts, labor & environmental fluid disposal fees), Tolls/Parking Fees +tax & Gas+tax. New 28-42 % value is annual owner expense used 10-28% value after 10 yrs old. Owning expense if have tools, knowledge & maintain self reducing cost then close to lower end owning. Every aspect owning is tax revenue based. Old car expect tax for insufficient fuel economy or smog (clean air - environmental tax). The latter tax suppose increase development public transport -- last looked that hasn't occur in 25 yrs but auto industry bailouts did!
I know a real estate millionaire who is such a tightwad, he doesn't even own a car any more. he also wanted me to do work for him for substantially less than I charged everyone else. I stopped returning his phone calls.

I really think you have to hate making car payments. Which I do. My husband and I had a brand new car when we were first married and we did not make the money that we should to afford the car. Every time I would roll up to the bank to make the payment I got a sinking feeling in my stomach looking at that coupon book and all of those coupons left to pay. We never did it again. The problem with buying things you can’t afford is that I put you in crisis mode. You continue making poor financial decisions because you run out of options. I hope some newly married people reading this might benefit from hearing this. Fortunately we learned our lessons and we’ve been married almost 25 years now.
Dave Ramsey has that attitude of if you’re any something in life you gotta work for it. The world doesn’t owe you anything. That was the way of life when I was growing up and I still live by that motto. This new entitled generation is what pisses me off. I work full time and go to school full time. I have no time for anything fun of course but I know if you work hard in life it generally pays off in the long run. I drive a rusted old car that I payed $1400 for and it drives and runs just fine. I love not having to worry about car payments and gas. Especially in school I can’t afford it. I couldn’t care less what people think as long as I can get to where I need to be I’m fine.

I'm sure this will show up in Dave's study as well, but the millionaire study they did 20 years ago showed that most millionaires either bought used or standard new cars: Ford, GM, Toyota. Not expensive ones.
