  • This video, subtitled in French, is an extract of a film from 1975 about CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) control system. It shows the first use of a touchscreen invented by Bent Stumpe.
Bent Stumpe is talking about his touchscreen invention in an event on Friday 26 September "From Physics to Daily Life", available via webcast in English and French: cern.ch/webcast/. (His talk is scheduled from 14:40 - 15:00 CEST). For a full programme of the talks see: / 1530277660517523
Bent Stumpe is also one of the CERN researchers participating in "Pop Science" for European Researchers' Night 2014 on Friday 26 September. For more details see: / 1516967148546755 and www.pop-science...
In 2014, CERN is celebrating 60 years of science for peace. Find out about the celebrations and events being organised for #CERN60 via cern.ch/CERN60

I love watching these old type films, unmolested by technology and getting into the roots of what has brought us to where we are now. The 8-bit sounds, the use of a trackball/mouse, the brutal simplicity of the components used (without getting into the beam-related stuff) makes me appreciate the technology we have now even more.

This is not fake.. look up Wikipedia for touchscreen technology and you will find the names of Frank Beck (computer scientist, 1930-2020) and his colleague Bent Stumpe (electronic engineer, born 1938) to have first come up with the working model of the touchscreen.
