It showed a great generational divide here. From what I remember it was a staff member for our mayor at the time who recognized that they were Mooninites cause not a lot of people over the age of like, 40 at the time was watching adult swim so had 0 idea what they were while my classmates (14 at the time) all knew what it was and thought this was awesome.
You can kind of tell, looking back, just how bitter a lot of the news stations/reporters were at this whole thing, and how they clearly blamed CN and the marketing campaign for "making them look like paranoid conspiracy theorists," when talking about it like they were actual bombs. Just the level of actual anger being thrown around in the reports that it was a failed marketing campaign.

They probably thought they were telling breaking news about some new big terror threat only to find out they were just promotional material for a cheap animated movie for teenagers
It is actually very dumb and bothersome how Cartoon Network and Adult Swim were blamed for all this when it was the news media that should have at least some blame! Seeing how this changed Cartoon Network more then anything else and news only lived on until other things got on their case. It is really just frustrating.
Do you know what I feel is the funniest part about this dumb fiasco? It's 110% in-character for Ignignokt and Err to pull a stunt like this. Like, no joke, they've probably laughed their butts off over the prospect that they are so high above the human race that their mere presence in Boston was able to spread panic, make national news and almost brought Adult Swim and Cartoon Network down to its knees. Seriously, I can't imagine their reaction being anything else!
I honestly think it was stuff like this that eased the main media networks into the mindset where they had absolute confidence that they could straight up maliciously lie and cause panic as long as they had a reasonable enough scapegoat for the majority of the public that's too naive and trusting of them to blindly rely on them for accurate information. Early-mid 2000s just seems like the point where the American world started rolling downhill imo.
This topic has obviously been covered extensively, but this video is the best I've seen about it. The additional context of the "yes era mystery billboards" clarified why cartoon network / turner broadcasting would even attempt this kind of campaign in the first place and I've never seen that aspect discussed before. Great job.
Wikipedia: "On February 27, 2007, a month after the incident, the Boston police bomb squad detonated another suspected bomb, which turned out to be a city-owned traffic counter."
When you realize that the 2nd Circuit Court ruled in ~2000 that it was legal for Police departments to discriminate against people with an IQ they deemed "too high", it all starts to make sense
This biggest part that people miss: Why does Boston have all these explosives of their own, and people trained to use them, but are afraid of Lite Brites? How is it not scary for such idiots to have access to actual bombs?
this situation is weird to me because i vaguely remember this happening but had no clue what an “adult swim” was besides “oh no king of the hill is on i gotta go to bed”
I was 16 at the time and I not only had been watching the show and Adult Swim itself since the beginning when I was 10, but now had the Internet to hear people talking about it. I knew instantly how silly it was, but didn't know the marketers got "punished" for it until now because I forgot about it assuming everyone would laugh it off
This incident was absolutely absurd. The one thing you didn't mention here that probably deserves to be mentioned: the devices had been in place for about 2 weeks when the incident occurred. I don't know either to mock Bostonians for being so slow to react to a 'threat' or just mock them that light bright advertisements are a threat. The most hurtful labeling was calling the ads "terrorism", "terrorism hoax", or "PR stunt". They were ads marketing a product. They had no intention to be anything more than that and any reasonable person would immediately understand that. All these media characters, politicians, and police trying to save face by saying "this was the reaction they were trying to create" are not only wrong, but lying because they were either trying to blame someone else for their own incompetence or repeating the incompetent's lie. Boston police was rightly mocked for their stupidity and we should never forget how they tried to legally blame innocent people for their own incompetence.
I mean, logic dictates that if you were the _only_ city in America to react this way, then the problem must be you. Honestly, who sees something shiny, obviously directing attention to itself, and thinks *_"That must be a discreetly placed bomb!"_*
Its weird how the people who put up electronic images of cartoon charactors were punished because a bunch of jingoistic 50 year olds were too paranoid and though it was a bomb, somehow

Yeah. Tho, it's sad that this cause the entire animation industry to stop making the thick-line style in traditional animation (not counting indie internet animation). Sadly, the only hand-drawn animated series that still used thick-lines after that situation were SpongeBob/The Patrick Show (both less frequently, tho), Butch Hartman's work (until Bunsen is a Beast) and OK KO. I remember seeing this on the news. It was the funniest and also saddest thing ever that Cartoon Network got in trouble. I remember people from Boston were taking these down and selling these on eBay.
I remember when this all went down! I’ll never forget! I hear a reporter saying “aqua teen hunger force” like she was saying a foreign word she’d never seen before. And I thought, oh, they called in a bomb threat. Oh that sounds like them. They’re insane. Well, of course that’s NOT what happened, and the light bright mooninites were in many other cities and none of them went insane!
I remember seeing this as a young lad back in 07. I remember seeing Err, and thinking how stupid they were to not instantly recognize it as an ATHF advertisement. Was a great formative experience for me about how fucking stupid the media is.
It takes an impressive amount of mental gymnastics to never once wonder why someone wanting to blow up a city with a bomb would cover it with neon lights so everyone can see it easily?

Do you know what I feel is the funniest part about this dumb fiasco? It's 110% in-character for Ignignokt and Err to pull a stunt like this.
Like, no joke, they've probably laughed their butts off over the prospect that they are so high above the human race that their mere presence in Boston was able to spread panic, make national news and almost brought Adult Swim and Cartoon Network down to its knees. Seriously, I can't imagine their reaction being anything else!
crazy how turner got punished for it when the only ones spreading terror where the news and the city of boston.
That's what The State does; stick a twig in its own bicycle spokes then send police to kidnap or murder you over it like it's your fault
This topic has obviously been covered extensively, but this video is the best I've seen about it. The additional context of the "yes era mystery billboards" clarified why cartoon network / turner broadcasting would even attempt this kind of campaign in the first place and I've never seen that aspect discussed before. Great job.

Shiny object!?
ZOMG CALL THE POLICE!
Not only that, but 6 years later the Boston Bombing proved that terrorists don't want their payload to stand out before it goes off.

I lived outside of Boston while this was happening, and started to laugh hysterically when I found out what the "devices" actually were. I don't blame the BPD for taking precautions, but man this was a weird day.
It still boggles my mind how this was supposed to be a bomb scare!!!?!? How was this a bomb scare??!!!
people who dont understand tech will see a phone charger in a backpack at the airport and then shit themselves
News casters don't get paid to be boring. They get paid to sell sensationalist stories to people who might not know any better.
I find it crazy how the *campaign* was blamed for taking up resources from the city, when in fact it was a bunch of random people who actually did it, it's not like CN or Turner was just prank-calling police stations about the signs as if they were bombs. the anger was seriously misplaced from both authorities and news media
"with thanks to urban dictionary" is the funniest thing i ever seen involved in an actual news broadcast
I don't know, the Fox News "exploding vans" bit on 4chan ("Anonymous") was the peak of insanity IMO
Imagine being scared of a quirky moon man lookin lite-bright, boomers really on some other sh*t
Agreed people overreacted so very stupidly i know it was after a a terrorist attack but if they're paranoia is so high that a cartoon character on like a bride your immediate thought is "OMG ITS A BOMB GET THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY" then get help immediately

“who attached light boards to bridges in a post-9/11 world? some sort of moron?”
i respect Shep Smith quite a bit but come on, man. every day past 9/11, we’re living in a post-9/11 world. we’re still allowed to have fun.
Also they did this in multiple cities, Boston was the only one that reacted the way they did
“we won’t let the terrorists win because we won’t live in fear! anyway WEIRD LOOKING CARTOON ON THE SUBWAY PANIC PANIC PANIC”
@@NeonTailzzz Which is a good excuse to bring up one of my favorite protest signs: "Never forget 1/31/07: If it's not an American Flag, it's probably a bomb."
Tyrants love using that excuse. Got accused of claiming i was going to shoot up my highschool. Got arrested, expelled, and ostracized from my community over something i was found innocent of, and the excuse was "post 9/11 society, can't take that risk anymore". This nation is disgustingly hypocritical in all it's aspects.
9/11 didn't even involve any bridges, so I don't know what the guy thinks the link between the two is.
I went to the convention they held in Boston tonight and they cleared all this up and it was Hilarious .

Of all the content he's released, I never would've expected something like this.
It is worth noting that two of the planes on 9/11 took off from Logan airport in Boston
I still wonder how many people walked past these before they were reported, but knew about the show & thus didn't report it to the police
So many people have forgotten Aquagate. Thank you for keeping the ludicrousness alive.
The fact that this happened blows my mind. Stupidity at its finest.
I mean just because they are cartoon characters doesn't mean they can't be bombs...that's a smart way to get people to think you are not doing anything shady by making your bombs cartoon characters and then boom
@@razkable true but the thing about terrorists is... they want to be noticeable. they dont want any ambiguity in their terror. without noteriety or ownership of the attack it means nothing to them because they cant recruit without it. terrorists are "smart" relatively speaking but theyre also brazen and fanatical about the message they send.
The only thing that outmatches it is the Fox News "exploding vans" report on 4chan
And it was that day, ever since then, Turner Media prohibited from making advertisements on billboards and stands.
Up until Rick and Morty 11 years later. True story btw
Friendly reminder that this video is what got me interested in Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Now, it's my all-time favorite Adult Swim show.
The style now only occurs in Flash animation.
@@kootunesscrewy Honestly that is sad to think about.
Makes me think there's a hatebase out there blaming this show for "animation's downfall".
@@ZeepAtomic It's not the show's fault. It's the outcry from Boston's fault.
@@kootunesscrewy Exactly. I'm just worried some manchildren on DeviantArt probably took it in the wrong sense.
I remember I started watching Adult Swim from day one. Because I was like 10 I thought the point was that the adults went swimming so it was time for the kids to watch TV or something. Yeah I was dumb. And when my Mom found out she didn't believe me and thought I was trying to "sneak" and watch adult stuff. First 3 seasons of ATHF are the best ever. Also I miss The Brak Show
"And Cartoon Network would never be good ever again"

That was only after the nightmare that was the live action stuff
Craig of the Creek is a pretty recent show, but it's actually a pretty good watch. It basically takes the outdoor playtime of kids where some episodes focus on the fantasy part and other's the reality part, although sometimes they blend in a bit of both.
@@QueenLethargy i don't really have cable anymore but i do want to look into it

God that must be terrible, living in Boston have you ever tried driving there!
Most have been a wild ride
I mean can you imagine living in Boston at all?
Imagine being a ATHF fan living in Boston at the time, you’d look at the entire situation and facepalm the second you saw The Mooninites
i was around 12 living about 20 minutes away. i definitely remember only really hearing that cartoon network caused a bomb scare and being very confused as to how that worked. i found out online what it actually was and thought “how the fuck did anyone think these were bombs”
That incident caused the network to no longer air new episodes of Code Lyoko during its final season. Also, that bomb scare in Boston came true six years later during the Boston Marathon bombing.
Fun Fact: This scare happened on the same year as Cartoon Network would reach it's 15th anniversary.
God, this is why that episode wasn’t completed?! I saw the episode on a binge of the show one night, and I was confused why it was mostly still images. But now because of this video, I know. And I will never forget.
The woman at 6:44 has other interviews and seems to obviously know exactly what she's talking about. It's really quite refreshing after most of the other coverage.
Although we did lose Jim Staples as a president, I still appreciate and love Stuart Snyder’s attempts to experiment with the network and its programming.
11 days after I was born crazy shit happened in boston lol.
I wonder, can elderly Boston citizens still not tell the differences between a bomb and a cartoon alien giving the middle finger?
“The bullet of death… is blipping towards you!”

As someone who lives near Boston, I’m shocked I didn’t hear this story until 8 years later.
Excellent video Nick! I learn about the history of the event before, but you explain and chronicle the story very well and you provide great details and writing to make this video fun and fascinating to watch. This is one of my histories of marketing campaigns gone wrong. Keep up the excellent work man! 👍
Yooo PAtMac! Love that dude, glad to hear his voice again!
I think this is my fav coverage of this incident because it gives so much more context and history. The thing that shocks me the most is that the people responsible for simply placing the boards up were arrested or even faced charges when they were just doing their job, even if all serious charges were dropped and it was only community service they shouldn't have been treated like that.
