The Cat C DB9 Volante was a strange one. It belonged to a dealer with £1m+ of mid- to high-end stock in a slightly remote part of Northern Ireland. They said they had owned it for several years and pretty much "forgotten" about it. I didn't really understand that; only thing I could think of was some sort of COVID reason. The engine issue didn't sound major from his explanation - maybe just needed plugs/coils; but of course maybe not. Biggest problem was that there was no documentation at all for the Cat C -- it happened before they got it and they didn't know what. Anyway it sold quickly despite the awkward location.
I can't work out which parts would add up to £8k in a DIY engine rebuild. Presumably replacing all pistons, rods, valves, camshafts, etc.? New crankshaft? On a ~£25k car to keep for myself I wouldn't be replacing any internals that weren't defective and would hope to spend a lot less! Although I totally agree with your overall point about how easy it is to fall into a false economy trap with cars like these.

It’s always good the get things in perspective. If it sounds or looks too good to be true, it most probably is. Thanks for the insights Mike.

This rationale is the same for any car or marque. Sellers be it private, dealers or insurance companies try and sell just bellow market or above repair. Doesn’t mater if its a list of ‘small items’, a blown engine or Cat S damage, putting it right will cost you at best the non damaged asking price for a goid one… companies especially insurance have a lot of knowledge and expertise on this and know there’s always a buyer who doesn’t realise what they are getting into.

Really enjoy watching your videos, been watching your channel since 2020. I just bought a non running 2004 Classic Vanquish. Got the car run and drive, currently fixing the engine wiring harness. Mice chewed the black and white wire for the coolant temp sensor.

Are you saying that if you have an older DB9 that is running fine, get shot of it now before it goes bang ?

Great informative vid as usual Mike. I have a question do you personally or does Bamford Rose own a Aston Martin road car? I think it would be great to see what you guys personnel choice is and the mods you have carried out to it . I think that would be a great video also i loved your rover tomcat from the petrol revolt review . Cheers

Why bother with a DB9 that only makes 450 hp if you can just get yourself a V8 Vantage S that makes 430 hp and is the best sounding car on earth. In my opinion the 12s have more issues than the V-8, and they have 4 too many cylinders to sound great. Every car show I take my V8 Vantage S to, everybody loves the ways it sounds and looks. Volcano Red, the only way to fly!
