When using the dremmal tool how deep are you cutting into the blank and once you put the crystals in which turning carbide tool are you using?

I try to keep the channel 1-2mm above the brass tube. But occasionally it goes to the tube.
Then the tool is a Rikon 70-800 round carbide.
The stones are a crushed opal that I sell in my Etsy store CursedToToil
