- Need help animating your motion graphics!? In this exciting After Effects Tutorial, we will create custom paths that will allow you to take any object or text layer and animate along that path. This animation technique will speed up your workflow and make the position key-framing process easier. In this After Effects tutorial, we will animate a vector graphic and a text layer that will wrap along a path.
Use shape layers to quickly create you paths and paste them over to your position parameter. To wrap text along a path, create the mask within your text layer and set the path options to your mask.

If you want your object to follow and ROTATE along the path after you pasted path keyframes, right click object > transform > auto-orient > orient along the path.

6 years after and this video still have a gold like value
for closed path (like oval) - if you need change start point - on shape layer select anchor point - right click mouse > mask and shape > set first vertex
For change direction - chose position (to select all points on timeline) - top menu>animation>keyframe assistant>time-reverse keyframes
tried this tutorial from a lot of other authors. this was the easiest to understand

I think you missed something with the rotation as the rocket is moving on the path but it's going straight itself as it should rotate along the curvature of the path isn't it?
I don't know anything about after effect but i came here because in the software that im learning (blender 3D software) there is this follow a path thing and i have used it when in was creating my first two simple animations for my UA-cam channel.

im not getting "path option" option, i would do it with a png image, but even with text it's not appearing (for circular movement)
make sure you are not on any layer. no layer is selected or highlighted. then use the pen tool to draw your path and open up that layer from the pen tool like he said to copy the path. hope that helps :D

Clear and precise , PERFECT!!
just a heads up, reduce the wiggles values a little for if youre using normal lens flare. otherwise it obnoxiously flickers in and out of sight.
And apply a glow to it to make it similar to the optical flare look.

There might be other use cases for this. The object isn't really animated along a path. It's animated ON THE KEYFRAMES created with the path. But, good presentation, so thank you!

Very frustrating! You go so quickly pasting the path onto the object - nothing moves when I scrub through the timeline.
hi idk why but its not working instead of a rocket I took a plain elips and when I paste the path on the elipss position it doesn't snap to the start of the path

but how do we define only start end end keyframes and then animate along a path? by doing it like that we make sure its speed will not change
When I attempt this my pen draws a red shape. I tried matching the settings I see on your screen so now it makes a black shape but the blue line is identical only there are no key frames. Doesn't paste anything into the layer I'm trying to animate.
What am I doing wrong?

when i do this the shape just jumps from the individual "subframes", it stutters really bad, it does not "flow", why is this?
Hey, Thanks for your videos. What if we want to reverse the direction of the movement to start from the other side of the path with the same path?
Select the keyframes > right click > Keyframe Assistant > Time-Reverse Keyframes

Is there a way to invert the order of the object following the path? Dragging the first/last keyframe doesn't work, it changes the whole path. Contents > Shape 1 > Path 1 and clicking the "arrow order" doesn't change anything...
Copying and pasting the path into a shapes position doesn't work for me. Has this feature been removed?

I have 2 paths, with 2 seperate objects, and when I paste the second object onto the second path, it pastes onto the first path, I have carefully selected the second path. Please help
When I paste the path, it pastes much higher up than the original path and I can't move it down

the anchor point has to be placed in the middle of the object else it wont go along the path. is this something that is to be assumed and not worth explaining in the video?

When you go to "click on the rocket graphic" is that just your image file for the rocket? I have a png open but dont see what youre seeing
