Born and raised Minnesotan, moved away for 5 years to Massachusetts and Colorado, loved both, but had to move back home. In my opinion, it's the best quality of life in the country. Thanks for visiting, and glad you liked it enough to tell others about it! Come back any time!
Agreed. Moved all over and even lived outside the US, but Minnesota hasn't left me. I even miss the winters. I don't think it is the greatest state for a lot of people needing a ton of history or constant excitement, but it is definitely a great place to settle down and live. And yes, we can do better.
Similar situation with me, except I was only 1 state away in Iowa. Was down there for 4 years and ended up becoming homesick, so this year I decided to move back.
I drove through Minnesota a couple of months ago. What I saw was clean, well organized and beautiful. I can see why you rated it so high. Despite the cold winters, I would live there, if given the right opportunity.
I am so happy to hear that as a Minnesotan. A big thing I love about the state is the nature, if you ever get an opportunity you gotta see the boundary waters or Voyageur.
MN native here. Have to say you were spot on with your info. Thank you. One other cool thing, MN typically has one of the highest voter turnout rates in the country. Some places struggle to hit 50 percent but MN is usually above 70
Minnesota born. The winters suck and so do the sports teams but there are so many beautiful parks and lots of outdoor activities. I couldn't live anywhere else.
Fun fact about the all that medical tech that is so common in Minnesota, all that goes back to the mid-late 19th century and early 20th with Minneapolis being known as the Mill City. So many people were being maimed or seriously injured working at all these different kinds of mills, that Minneapolis soon also became known as the Prosthetic limb capital of the world by the 1910's. This laid the foundation for all the medical tech companies that grew up in the area and why the U of MN-Twin Cities is such a premier medical school
Much love from MN! Fun fact about MN, we consistently have some of the highest census responses rates. The Upper Midwest generally has the highest but MN is usually the highest as it relates the percentage of population.
Yes, and because of that high census response, Minnesota Kept a seat in Congress. New York state would have kept a seat if they had 72 more census responders. Also, don't forget that Minnesota routinely has the highest voting percentage in the country.
I wanna move there from Georgia. Tired of the lunatics that live here and run this state into the ground. We could have been the Minnesota of the South before the last 20 years happened.
Ah Minnesota, love ya. Some of my best memories were as a trainee for the St Paul (insurance co), strolling to work in downtown St Paul in late April, beautiful mornings, Spent 3 weeks in MN loved it.. Later, taking Hwy 61 hugging the shore of Lake Superior, to Grand Marais, spectacular. Best drive ever. Nice Ode/nice job..
Compared to some, I'd say Minnesotans do a good job making the most of the winters. I really do miss them. In Tokyo (like DC), the city shuts down if a single flurry hits the ground...and they use umbrellas (unlike DC)!
i am legitimately looking forward to it. it's been a hot summer. winter is fresher. and cozier. and clearly every state's gonna have a downside, i think all things considered the weather is a good tradeoff. it's kind of like our defense shield. think of the vikes in the 70s
Minnesota is my favorite. Other states I have lived in include, Hawaii, Alaska, South Dakota, Louisiana, Alabama, and Michigan. My plan is to retire in Minnesota.
I have had a similar experience and would say the same. I'd love to travel to other states and live there for some time, but to retire? definitely Minnesota
@@gus473 be a little more honest with your statement though: On average, Minnesotans with less than $23,900 household income pay no tax on their Social Security income. For households with less than $57,700 household income, 18.5% of Social security income is taxable. For households with more than $57,700, 65.5% is Social Security is taxable on average. The state only started doing this because the federal government did it. The rate is going lower and only 45% of Minnesotans actually end up with less Social Security. Additionally, there are 13 states which do this so it's not like Minnesota is exceptional either.

Kyle, Thanks for putting my home state on top. You did a nice job of getting the highlights!....even the Jucy Lucy shot... which we spammed you about during the March Madness matchup. I hope you can stop by some time and make it to Voyageurs National Park and the BWCA.
I love it here! Next time you come around you should hike interstate park (both MInnesota and Wisconsin sides) as it has some really cool geographic features that you’d probably enjoy.
I haven't visited MN yet, but I've always heard good things. I had a coworker who was from there and she was genuinely nice and friendly. I had heard of the "Minnesota nice" expression but never really believed it until then. Looks like a great place to live all around. Thanks for the useful info Kyle!
I'll never understand the fear and loathing of winter. It's so beautiful here (except for March) all winter. No bugs. Lovely refreshing temps. Low humidity. Currier and Ives scenery. Cozy inside. It's easily better than hot weather. Now, I'm going to go throw some more wood on the fire and snuggle into bed. --Hugs to you all, from the Minnesota woods.
I love it here. I'll never move. I didn't even know just how good we have it here until I started traveling as an adult and watching videos like this about other states and cities where things are not so good like the Rust Belt, St. Louis, LA, West Virginia, and other places. Anyway, thanks for proving what I already knew! Minnesota is the best!
One of only six states I have not visited - yet!! And I have dear friends that live there, too! That said, I personally could never retire to a snowy cold state... Anyway - love the vid, love your new background, and always love your takes. Cheers!
But if you don't, how can you enjoy the Minnesota pass time of complaining about the weather, but never wanting to leave? It's great fun! We moan about the cold in the winter, and talk about how much we wish it was summer, and then summer comes around and we complain about the heat and wish it was closer to winter
Minnesota is easily my favorite state. I lived there in college but have since moved to Colorado. I bought land on a lake near Brainerd last year to build a cabin. Plenty of state pride, always running a budget surplus, so many Fortune 500 companies, etc. Going back to visit in a week and can’t wait.
Hey Kyle, another neat thing about MN is the Lakes Region bike trails. There is a network of Rail Trail conversions and you can bicycle much of the way across MN on paved trails separated from drivers. The trails are part of the Northern Tier bicycle route mapped by Adventure Cycling Association.
I was born and raised in Minnesota. I lived in Duluth. Then at age 17, in 1962, I left. After four years of Military service, I decided that San Francisco is my home and I've been here ever since. I do not own a snow shovel or an air conditioner. I truly love San Francisco, but I have all the respect in the world for Minnesota.
My fiancé and I have been thinking about moving from Texas to Minnesota, and then you release this video. Maybe it’s a sign 🤔 all I know is the heat down here is slowly draining my will to live.
fun fact: Minnesota and Texas are the only two states with Interstate highways labeled in part by letters, and both instances happen to be stretches of I-35, which connects the two states I-35W in Minneapolis and Fort Worth I-35E in Saint Paul and Dallas
Thank you! I really appreciate that. There's certainly no shortage of wonderful places to visit and I'm glad that you find the information useful. I'll try to keep it up.
Thank you for this sir, it made my day!! I watched that whole March Madness thing with interest and couldn’t believe what I saw!( MN over CA felt to me like the biggest upset in history! lol). I should mention that I live in the boring part of the state along I 90 (Austin specifically) but even here, life is pretty good!
This is why I think Minnesota is a good place to live. I don't recommend people visit, because there just isn't enough time to develop the connections and time needed to find things to do...and there are many things to do.
I go to other states, and it is weird, but it just feels like a weight is lifted off my shoulders when I drive back past the "Welcome to Minnesota" sign and it feels like home. Minnesota Hail To Thee!
Growing up in the cities was great and the north west shore of Lake superior goes underrated among American coastlines; a soft barrier beach, some huge cliffs, and a couple black beaches
This Wisconsinite loves Minnesota (other than the Vikings lol). It's on my list of places I'd like to move to. My only concern is Minneapolis. Is it going downhill or does the media just blow things out of proportion?
Minneapolis has been better in the past but certain areas are still fine to live in with lower crime rates. But most of the suburbs are seeing an influx of people and are still close enough to work in Minneapolis without a terrible commute.
Yeah the issue’s more than anything repeat offenders continuing to not be punished much by the justice system, and they tend to stick to the worse parts of whatever city they’re living in, so I’m sorry if you have to live there specifically but that’s the only problem really is now you have to be alert. I’ve rode my bike throughout the state and have never run into any trouble… even by the homeless camps lol. Something I’ve started doing is, when driving and stopped at a light, I leave enough space between me and the car in front of me to be able to drive away if someone runs up to my car with a weapon trying to carjack me. It’s true that we have low (er) crime but if we continue to reward thieves we will draw the attention of criminals. So I just try not to do that. I’m outside all the time and am not about to let people get in the way of my beautiful state and I. Sorry for rambling
Blown out of proportion for sure. Also, after the media firestorm around Minneapolis passed nationally the thing that got left behind was the outpouring of community outreach and support to areas affected by events in past year or so. They tend to gravitate on the flashy and the negative as a general bias which is unfortunate. Additionally the twin cities metro (and other parts of the state) vary a lot from locale to locale so it’s possible to get the MN spirit in a style that suites your lifestyle best!
Born in MN, moved when I was 6 grew up in FL. In between lived in 7 states, and 34 separate residents. When I moved back to MN I stayed. It was very cold, but I stayed. More than half of my years are in MN.
I've lived in Minnesota my whole life, and it's truly one of the cleanest states. Even in Minneapolis it's really clean, especially compared to most other high tax states where people flee from since they get very little benefit.
I lived in Minnesota 35 years. Possibly moving back in 2022. Good place for ethical people. Just got a new job at MSP. In Wisconsin right now. Miss the opened mindedness of Minnesota.
Lived in Twin Cities for 15 years a while back. Worked in high-tech. Really nice state. The winters could be brutal, but one adapts, and everyone is in it together. Very "modern" cities and easy to escape "up North." Just a perfect size metro area.
Minnesota doesn't get much love. As somone born there and now living in Europe, I am glad to see it get some apprecaition. Like you said there is always preferences, and I do not miss the dead of winter in Minnesota, but it is above or well above average in most areas objectively speaking. Well done Minnesota!
Well presented video! I especially agree with the concept that the higher taxes in Minnesota actually get you a higher quality of services. I have lived in Ohio for the past 10 years and, though I like many aspects about the Buckeye state, the overall quality of life is higher in Minnesota. Education quality in Minnesota is consistently higher as funding is more equitably distributed. I really miss the parkways and lakes of Minneapolis and the Twin Cities. I lived in Mpls from 1992 to 2011 and loved it. 2020 was a very tough year for Mpls due to the combination of the George Floyd murder and COVID-19, but Columbus is also having its share of issues. I’d also add The Jayhawks as one of the best Mpls bands!
I was raised in Minnesota and have moved several times since then. I've been scheming for years about how I can stay in the industry I work in but still be able to move back to our family's farm in MN.
Moved from Minnesota to Georgia and Tennessee. Still love Minnesota. Only reason I ever saw people leave was winter. Many times have wished I was still there in terms of culture and sociology

Kyle, Thanks for putting my home state on top. You did a nice job of getting the highlights!....even the Jucy Lucy shot... which we spammed you about during the March Madness matchup. I hope you can stop by some time and make it to Voyageurs National Park and the BWCA.
I am intrigued by the juicy lucy. I'll be back up in MN in the spring, so I'm going to have to try one.
@@GeographyKing I recommend Matt's Bar in Minneapolis. That's where President Obama had his.
Thanks for showing some love to my home state! You’ve clearly done your research as everything you mentioned was spot on
I love it here!
Hey kyle thanks for the ode! Loved growing up here
I'll never understand the fear and loathing of winter.
Fuck March, all my homies hate march
I love it here. I'll never move. I didn't even know just how good we have it here until I started traveling as an adult and watching videos like this about other states and cities where things are not so good like the Rust Belt, St. Louis, LA, West Virginia, and other places. Anyway, thanks for proving what I already knew! Minnesota is the best!
Family cabin on Garfield Lake (30 min. s. of Bimidji). I love this state!
I like that first table because you show half the states and I was able to see where my state was ranked on the list
@@thefugitiv Lol!!!
Shhh! Don’t give away our secret!! Most people think we are just a part of fly over country….. Minnesota is an absolutely wonderful place to live 😍😍
I think it's a bit to the north of the main air route from LA to New York, but yeah, I liked Minnesota a lot when I went there last.
Another banger from the king. Kyle, comparing/rating the driver licenses of each state/territory would be a fun video!
You did a great job with the photos Kyle.
Excited for a Maine video, excited to hear what you think about my home state.
Nice to hear some great things to say about Minnesota after last year being in the spotlight for very negative reasons. It is a great state!
Thanks. Was a fan before my state won! Liked the band homages too, especially the Husker Du nod. Now, if our lakes manage not to dry up...
My fiancé and I have been thinking about moving from Texas to Minnesota, and then you release this video. Maybe it’s a sign 🤔 all I know is the heat down here is slowly draining my will to live.
I've seen a ton of Texas plates up here the last couple years... Come on up! We're just up the street a bit...
Yes you gotta come up here it is great except for the roads. Our roads are bad all year (If they aren’t closed) so watch out for deer and potholes.
Oh my gosh y’all are so welcoming 😭
fun fact: Minnesota and Texas are the only two states with Interstate highways labeled in part by letters, and both instances happen to be stretches of I-35, which connects the two states
I-35W in Minneapolis and Fort Worth
I-35E in Saint Paul and Dallas
I made that move and have no regrets
What, no Soul Asylum in the background collage?
I kid, fantastic video as always.
i would visit any state that you recommend im your biggest fan !
Nicely done. I'm a native of almost 5 decades and know the state very well and easily have more good than bad to say about it!
Minnesota is my favorite state out of the five I’ve lived in. The twin cities metro is one of the best in the country in my opinion
I have done my travels and as a mn born and raised I love my state!
I will say that there's fun things to do everywhere, but you often need to find out where to look
I would love to see you do a geographic profile on Colorado some day! It got super far in Geography March Madness too
👍🏼Routt County rocks....! 😎✌🏼
Blown out of proportion 100%. Love it here!

So many beautiful lakes in Minnesota. The lakes seem to be so much cleaner and more tranquil than what I find in Michigan where I'm originally from.
Great vid, but you forgot the North Shore of Lake Superior! A gorgeous massive lake!
Officially hooked to this channel
Minnesota reminds me of that old show Bobby's World don't ya know
Born in MN, moved when I was 6 grew up in FL.
Been to the shitties lately? Still haven't cleaned up fully from last year's "peaceful" fires.
@@jpoppinga8417 yeah, haven't been over there, I live on the other side of the city
I lived in Minnesota 35 years. Possibly moving back in 2022. Good place for ethical people. Just got a new job at MSP. In Wisconsin right now. Miss the opened mindedness of Minnesota.
Never lived in MN, but while in college, I spent 4 years in Sioux Falls, SD, which is only 12 miles from MN.
I really liked this video. It would be nice to see more from other states
YES WE WIN SOMETHING! Can't do that in sports...😔
HAHA YEA...
We won the World Series twice but since then nothing unless you count the lynx or another small team
@@yayhay1 call me crazy but Lynx games are fun to go to. Especially their playoff runs a few years ago when they kept making it to the finals
I'd rather win at life expectancy and quality of life than sports... But c'mon Vikes.
Never clicked on a video so fast
Lived in Rochester and the Twin Cities for 20 years, wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the country. Love the humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, love the recreation opportunities, the Geography of the state, and the culture.
love my minnesota, born and raised
Minnesota is great, I love this state. I have lived here my whole life its cool from top to bottom.
When I drive over from SD I noticed the better infrastructure and upkeep of the place.
