ah yes, back when people were saner and recognized that it was not something to be proud of. Quality singing, great song pick, nice adaptation to guitar.
Thanks for listening. For me, this song is impactful because it doesn’t try to make a generalizable statement about the subject matter. It’s extremely limited in scope by sharing just Folds’ personal experiences (also filtered through how he felt about it at that time in his life, as a teenager). By digging deep into the personal, I think he actually is able to transcend the discourse on abortion and share a more universal expression of his own humanity which all listeners can relate to, whatever their own beliefs may be.
Haha, that’s fair. The story behind this song is autobiographical, from what I understand. I admire Folds’ honesty to present himself in what could be considered an unflattering light. Admitting that when we’re in distress, we can be drawn into self-centered and un-empathetic ways of thinking that come at the expense of our loved ones. A “hurt people hurt people” kind of situation, I guess.
Never knew this would sound so good on guitar. Great cover!
Aw, thanks so much!
