I just read somebody on reddit whose 20 month old son is obsessed with Lawnmower and it's the first thing he wants to see when he comes home from nursery! Sparks music is spanning generations!
ua-cam.com/video/V07aNPZfPeU/v-deo.html "Forever Young" Sparks (1977) "I'm gonna beat the devil and stay forever (Forever young, forever young) I can't be pushed around and I won't get older..."
I saw them live in Berlin and that was in June (2023) , but I am still in the "Jaw - Dropper" - state...I love the SPARKS since 1974 , but I was really blown away by their vivid and powerful performance! WOW! All my love to the wonderful Mael - Brothers!❤❤❤
This could be the biggest lawnmower song in decades. The last one I can remember that seemed like it might be this big was "I Know what I Like" by Genesis in 1973, and that song really buried the lawnmower part with extraneous elements.
I heard that Peter Gabriel originally wrote and recorded the song “Sledgehammer” as “Lawnmower”. Pirate copies are floating around on the dark web and on underground gardening websites. Alternatively you can just play the song as it now exists and shout Lawnmower!! every time Peter sings Sledgehammer. He actively encourages this at concerts.
It was very difficult to get stuff like that past the censors in the 70’s. I must admit explicit songs like this do make me wonder whether we’ve gone too far in the other direction.
More recently you had Talking Heads with “Nothing (But Flowers) which would’ve been the early 90’s, I reckon. “If this is paradise, I wish I had a lawnmower.”
How the hell anyone can invent invigorating new music ... about the most excruciatingly mundane machine, the lawnmower? It baffles me, even as a longtime Sparks fan. Indeed, it sounds fresher than the scent of freshly mown grass. Russell's voice is forever young. Brilliant, guys!!
This has been the 'song in my head' song for 2 years now and I still love it. Why aren't there like 10X the views for their videos?? People are missing some great stuff. The production values are awesome.
Great song. Sparks are one of the most under-rated pioneers. Its great to see them getting more recognition. A living example of making Art & not giving a shh*t about the rest. More power to them!
This is exactly why I love Sparks. It's the creativity, the humor, the fun, the sense of harmony and thematic variation that is like a hybrid of The Beatles and Phillip Glass, and the ability to write terrific songs about anything.
Yeah, the "Beatles" Element you mean is the incredible ability of Ron to write catchy melodies with some ironic Element built in....and Philipp Glass:i also thougt about those Elements in the Work of Sparks. This Song here ist in the "Higher nonsense Style" Like Hippopotamus
This video came up randomly on my playlist. I bought the first three Sparks albums when I was at school in the early/mid seventies, then heard nothing much until this. I love it. I bought A Steady Drip...and can't stop listening to it. Such a huge back catalogue to catch up on!
Ron and Russel are my shining stars since so many decades! SO MUCH love for these wonderful guys, creative giants and great musicians... words missing! FOREVER a fan!!!
I've just discovered Sparks today and they're so good. How have I never come across them before? Surely one of the most underrated bands ever. A band from the 70s!?!?!?!
WELCOME to the wonderful world of Sparks! You probably know that their channel has all 24 albums to entertain you for a couple of hours. Very various styles! You won't be bored. The Los Angeles brothers Ron and Russell Mael are Sparks, together with a band they put together specific for their project at the time, but mostly use the same musicians. They started as a band in the late sixties, (listen to this, from 1967, sixty seven, look in the comments! ua-cam.com/video/S4BoBKbFi1U/v-deo.html ) recorded their first album 1971, 'Halfnelson', self named with the name they used at the time. On advice they changed their name to Sparks, re-issued the album, now called 'Sparks' 1972, and released their second 'A Woofer in a Tweeter's Clothing', the same year. Their break came up with 'Kimono My House' in England 1974, 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us' was the biggest hit, soon followed by 'Propaganda'. They play music that has been labeled as glam rock, pop, symphony rock, disco, but everything in their own ways, not predictable from time to time. 2015 they had a collaboration with Franz Ferdinand, an album, 'FFS', and a tour under the name 'FFS', well worth a listening too! 2009 they had a request from the Swedish public radio, Sveriges Radio, about making a radio musical about something that had to do with Sweden. They hesitated, but being interested in movies, they agreed; the result was 'The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman'. Since many years back they were working on a movie musical, 'Annette', to be directed by the French director Leos Carax. With Adam Driver and Marion Cottilard in leading roles the filming started fall 2019 and was suposed to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but the epidemic... So we are still waiting. Also a documentary is made by the director Edgar Wright, waiting for release. RUMORS has hinted that it might be a film AND a short series, though the overwhelming amount of material. RUMORS!! NO FACTS!!
Then you discovered a them a full year before me. Aren't we more idiotic than we think but it's the madogga/take crap/pariah carey/no-asis/adele/diarhianna/tayleen spliff/harry styles generations that have done this damage.
It was around 2002 when I first heard sparks I was 15 years old and listened to the rythm thief that I randomly found on UA-cam. I have been addicted ever since.
The little Beethoven Album was also my First contact....and wow! Anybody Else with my opinion: Sparks Seem to be the only Formation i know to get even better while getting older? Just a question...

Sparks are the reason 2020 is not a complete bust.
Agree 👍🏼
Could not agree more!
Shriekback, Tangerine Dream, and Einsturzende Neubauten also have new stuff out this year. So at least it's a good year for music.
Yep, totally. But one seems to have aged better than the other.
