I agree with you 100%. I was born in the USA and when I take vacation we always go to the UK- London mostly and sometimes a stop in Liverpool. I find so much comfort in London and I look forward to visit as soon as I leave the country. We are taking our 10th trip to London in May since 2013. You covered just about everything that needed to be said about London, you should work for the travel bureau !!!! See in London in May !!!!

We've been to London many times. (We live in Vancouver). The last time was this October for 2 weeks. Unlike other trips, we didn't go anywhere else in the UK. We just moved hotels once from Fitzrovia to the Tower Bridge area. We walk all over London and have stayed in many different areas but we found Fitzrovia is our favourite. It has, by far, the best pub and restaurant choices. We loved our stay so much that we decided that we will likely continue to do this every year. I love your videos Tom and you really need do another one on places to eat.

Was great growing up in London. I rode the tube Independently from age 11. Can’t imagine many other cities in the UK where I could have that level of personal mobility. Outside London, younger people seem to be so much more reliant on mum and dad to chauffeur them around, and I’m not just talking about small towns.

Same here. I was going out and about on the buses from age 9, and on the tube and trains from age 11. A favourite thing to do on my own of a Sunday morning at 9 years old was to jump on a bus from home in Battersea and spend the morning walking around the museums in South Ken. The only worries my parents had about that was whether I'd be home in time for Sunday dinner!

The rest of us just don't get the investment unfortunately - Birmingham only got trams in the last few years. I grew up just outside Nottingham but much closer to the city centre than, for example, Uxbridge is to Charing Cross. But Uxbridge has 2 tube lines while my town had one bus an hour...if it showed up. I get fed up of London quite quickly nowadays but must admit I feel jealous of all the folks being able to get about wherever they want so easily at a much younger age than I ever could.

    Merry Christmas Tom!
London used to scare me, memories of being crammed into a rush hour tube and holding my mum's hand for dear life so I didn't get lost as a kid were my core memories. I've visited 4 times this year and that's changed now - I love it. I love that, depending on why I'm there, the whole vibe changes. A work trip to the City, is completely different from spending a day with friends at the museums and seeing a show. As someone who lives in a city with appalling public transport, I love how easy it is to get around, and how accessible it is for me as a visually impaired person. Man, I need to go back soon!

As a Londoner I know the city has many problems, tell me which very large one doesn’t have these, but overall I believe my city is the greatest in the World. London has an a, amazing way of reinventing itself. Sure some aspects were better in the past but many are better now and I guess this goes for most cities.. I love Paris, Rome,, Budapest, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Cape Town, (used to love NYC but not anymore). however none of these can realistically compare with London for a multiple of reasons.

I work as a high-end chauffeur in London & am pretty knowledgeable about what this great & wonderful city has to offer. Even though I know quite a bit, it often feels like the tip of the iceberg. There is simply so much here to do, both inside& out. Sometimes it’s almost overwhelming how much there is to do here. The choice is incredible.

Budapest also has a lot of transportation. A metro system, buses, trams (like 36 lines), trolleybuses, boats (only one transport line though :( ) , suburban railway trains, a funicular, a cog railway, a children's railway (a small railway run by kids) and let's not mension a Chairlift (like a Cable Car but only a seat). Also all of these are quite developed. Budapest is amazing! Because it is small but not as small as Paris, you can walk around it very easily!

    I. Love. Your. Channel! I'm able to get my London fix and I learn some stuff as well. If I was able to, I'd hire a black cab for an entire day to just take me where I want to go throughout the day. Also wanted to say to you and other cab drivers that my wife and I really appreciate you. We only use black cabs while we're in London because we trust you. We know you know the entire city like no one else and can get us where we need to go as quickly and safely as you can. We also tip very well because of that. A question I have as well. What type of payment do drivers prefer? I never have cash so it's either a credit card or an app. The app I usually use is Gett. Anyway, Happy New Year to you and if no one else tells you, these two American ladies sure are appreciative of you!

5:27 Fair point. When I was in Sydney last month, we witnessed a robbery (which my brother and I knew right away that it would fail). Because I was trained and wired to call 000 when I had robbery training with ex-cons, I went on surveillance mode. Even my brother and sister-in-law also carried on like it was nothing. Meanwhile: My Mum and my sister were on full-blown PTSD mode, leaving Dad to try and calm them both down. It was jarring to see. Even when I return to Auckland, my Mum pleaded with me to finish earlier in the day just so I can avoid ram raids.

I appreciate and respect the love for London.
I was born at St George’s in 91 and will always be proud.
But I unfortunately understand that with the modern problems like the “green zones” where they pretend to care about our environment and the continued smart revamping of certain areas of London forgetting heritage and cultures. London is stress free only if you’re rich.
    And I hate it

  • @rorrt

As an ex-Londoner, i'm biased.. It's pretty great..
But I can see why plenty of tourists get a form of Paris syndrome.. London syndrome if you will.
Where the expectation of a city is so great, it's just impossible to match.
It's why, I would honestly suggest for lots of tourists, to perhaps go to London, for a long weekend. And spend more time in places like Brighton, York, Bristol/Bath.. Where the pace is sooo much slower. Where the expectations are smaller. And to be honest, my nearest city Bristol. There is fecking loads to see and do.
I knew an American, from WA state. And he kind of hated London. Because people were rude. It's quite dirty. WHICH as Londoners we're used to. When I returned to London to see a friend's gig. The first 4 minutes of me using the tube was a nightmare. Dawdling, hesitation, not using good tube etiquette...... Then on the 5th minute it came back to me. Undertaking, taking shortcuts, tutting at 90 year olds struggling with zimmer frames.. It came back to me like riding a bike.

The energy of London when driving is still there but reduced by all the cameras and 20 limits. Because progress is so slow compared to a few years ago for a non taxi.

Cant help but agree on a lot of this but the idea London is relatively stress free I think might have lost me.
London is busy, with that element of being busy comes the stress of that and you can't really pretend otherwise. However that pace is part of London's character. You go to London to be swept up by it.
You're wrong about DC too 😉
Great video as ever. You articulate your perspective in a unique way and it makes it so interesting

People always compare LDN with NY, no comparison I love NY but block after block get boring pretty quick, NY has history but nothing like LDN, transport in LDN is better, food is better in LDN, more free things in LDN such as the museum's, Nightclubs have always been better in LDN as well as the muic scene in general... I could go on, NY is still great though and worth a visit.

As a former HGV driver I used to really enjoy driving in and through London. Cyclists aside, the standard of driving is much better than the rest of the U.K. ( not counting the M25 which is a different matter ) The cyclists however used to give me sleepless nights. Absolute idiots. Merry Christmas Tom. Be Lucky.

The only transport option to avoid is the pedal powered carriage scam. DLR is a pleasure and even the tube can be pain free if you pick your station and line carefully. Of course my favourite is a Hackney Carriage which is why I'm watching this. Where else are you going to get a history lesson and political/social commentary along with an efficient delivery to your destination?

You certainly know how to make a provocative video Tom. Telling people how great London is seems destined to annoy the rest of the country. I think you have fallen in love with London because your job has required you to really get to know London. Once you really know London it’s very difficult to escape its clutches. You could liken it to an addiction.

Again, wonderful video, but there is one thing keeping London from the "Greatest City in the World" title. And that is natural beauty. Just look at cities like Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, etc... These cities have much of the the culture, dining, history, and all - but add that extra bit of geography that London just can't bring to the table.

    • @TomtheTaxiDriver
      @TomtheTaxiDriver  5 місяців тому +1

That’s very true and something I overlooked. Other than Hampstead Heath, London has f all in the way of natural beauty 😂
