I was a hotel housekeeping manager for over 30 years. The most frustrateing thing ever was people throwing needles in the trash. One of our housekeepers picked ip the trash bag and pricked her hand. The time it took to contact the customer and find out it was for insulin was the longest. I called the girl at about midnight to tell her. She was so relieved. We sent her for testing anyway. People are so selfish.
My sister in-law used to manage a hotel in Aransas Pass Texas. I heard her telling her sister in-law about being careful especially when taking off the dirty sheets bedspreads and pillows because the junkies just drop their shit right where they use. They don't think or care about about throwing it in the trashcan.
Well they could’ve also lied. But you can usually tell because an insulin needle is often different than a drug use needle. In the future I suggest going to a hospital to receive a shot to help prevent any risk of contraction. They usually give this to rape victims but it can be for situations like this as well.
I work with HIV patients. Thank you for making this video. We need to continue to educate our communities on HIV/AIDS, because it is going nowhere. Education is our greatest weapon. Get tested, have safe sex/use clean needles every time folks!
I'd strongly advise against posting your protected health information (PHI) into social media. Whether comments or dating apps, it is a way around HIPAA.
@@juj3392I hope you are doing better now. I know the medication can keep you healthy but it give quite a mental toll. Surround yourself with good people 👍
I've gotten tested a few times now, usually as an add-on to broader STI panels, and even though I never expect the results to come back positive there's always a huge sigh of relief to see its negative.
I have similar symptoms so I had HIV and STI tests in eight years and it's negative! I would be surprised if I had those unless I was poked by sbs needle while I was unconscious 😂
At 60 years old, I've been HIV poz for more than half my life. I contracted an AIDS defining condition (Kaposi Sarcoma) three years in. Luckily, new drug treatments were coming out consistently. After cancer treatment and a new combo of drugs, I was able to reach the undetectable threshold and a high Cd4 count. The evolution of drugs and their side effects have gone from toxic and debilitating to more tolerable to almost nonexistent. HIV isn't the death sentence it used to be, by far.
I am so happy that you were able to start ART and recover. I have seen a few patients who come in with incredibly low CD4 (one had a CD4 of 7), have their opportunistic infections treated, start ART and now have healthy lives with an undetectable viral load. It is wonderful. We can literally reverse end stage AIDS to undetectable HIV infection. It just makes me sad that we have lost tens of millions to this virus, even to this day, due to lack of access to ART. I am grateful that you are someone who can use ART to live a long, happy life.
As someone who is HIV+/Undetectable, I'm very open about my status and educating others, although it admittedly can get exhausting sometimes. Honestly, I might just start sending people this video when they have questions 😂 It's very well done
@@conslygate4090 it comes up positive because of the HIV antibodies that are present, but there's a secondary test to check the viral load. If it's low enough, then that test will say "not detected" or something along those lines
I was born with HIV, and I’ve had to live in this world for 27 years. It’s always been a huge source of insecurities for me, I’ve always felt I’ve had to hide from the world, because I’ve felt so different, like a monster. Today I don’t feel like this anymore. But it has affected my interactions in life and it’s always a horrible talk for me with my sexual partners, and my romantic life. One additional thing to note: T-Cells, during their differentiation, go through a phase of being double-positive for CD4 and CD8. They then differentiate into CD4 or CD8 single positive cells. These double positive cells can be infected by HIV leading to decreases in CD8+ cells as well.

Truly remarkable how far we've come in the battle against HIV/AIDS in the last 40 years. What used to be a death sentence and the cause of so much fear and prejudice, even among healthcare providers, is now treatable and understood well enough to not create the same level of panic and discrimination as before. We still have a ways to go in some areas and hopefully a certain, select group of people don't try to derail these efforts any more than they already have.

Sex ed in school wasn’t designed to educate you about STD/STI, it was designed to prevent you/teens from having sex at all. Thats why they show all those grotesque pics which we now know don’t mean anything. You can almost never tell if someone has an STD by looking at them or their genitals.
I recommend going to a sexual health clinic if you can. They are much better armed at helping you through this scary time. But it is highly unlikely it’s HIV, even with exposure it’s not easy to catch. I’ve had exposure from a needle stick injury. I understand your fear. You will get through this. I accepted that my fear was valid, and that it would also pass, that it was not a permanent state that I would have to live in, regardless of whether I ended up pos or neg. Glad you’re putting out useful information. I miss doing HIV research (agent based simulation modeling). It was cool to explore all the different factors that can influence transmission. There’s also a new form of ART coming out that’s once monthly. Saw the NIH article a few weeks ago. Treatment was so effective compared to daily meds that they moved all participants into the treatment arm. ❤. By far treatment was the best way to slow transmission in simulations. More effective than condoms in preventing transmission.

People don't realize how common HIV is. Not as much as herpes, which is way more common than people think. But I work in pharmacy & it was extremely eye-opening to me how many of my patients have HIV. & I'm just one of four pharmacies in town. We need more education & less stigma. Most of my HIV+ patients are in great health, with low or undetectable viral loads, & lead normal, healthy, happy lives. Most of them are married &/or in stable relationships. In my pharmacy, out of the six of us, two have the herpes virus. & that's equivalent to the stats for the general population of 1 in 4. Shame & stigma prevent people from getting tested, which allows these very manageable diseases to proliferate. Thank you for doing the good work to educate people.

Hi Doc! My wife had a question: “At 10:40 you state that on average it takes 8-10 years after infection for AIDS to develop. Was this true in the 1980’s too, or have there been mutations? AIDS seemed to be spreading much quicker, and people seemed to be dying much faster. Ryan White was diagnosed at 13 after a blood transfusion, and I don’t think he contracted HIV at 5 years old?”
According to many scientists, which include Kary Mullins, there was no evidence that HIV caused aids, and if takes example 6 years in order to get aids then the whole 80's is wrong, also Luc Montagnier talk about it, stated even your body with proper nutrition naturally eliminates the virua
What’s frightening is the amount of married men on you tube videos travelling to Thailand, suggesting Prep to not use condoms with sex workers, then getting on the plane days later to go home.
Most men going to Thailand ( which isn't many) usually stay. However, whats really frightening is the amount of married women that cheat everyday on their great husband's right here in america. I've been HIV positive since 2008 and have been undetectable for nearly as long. Really appreciate you mentioning U=U since there's still, even among the gay male community, some stigma associated with having intercourse with poz people. It's not nearly as bad as ten years ago, and it seems like everyone who is negative is on Prep which is hugely important to keeping new infections low.
@@user-qjvqfjvthen don’t have sex with them - you don’t need to have a stigma to do that. You can also have a stigma associated with having 30 kids if you can’t afford them

A French Canadian flight attendant picked it up in the Congo region of Africa, flew to New York, and disseminated it at a leather bar, that spread out from there.
It is important to note here that HIV/AIDS is not spread by mere touch or physical contact; it spreads only through body fluids. It is, hence, imperative for the physical and psychological well-being, that the HIV/AIDS infected persons are not isolated from family and society.
It can be transmitted through intravenous drug use as well. And I dislike how white women are never in PREP commercials or commercials for hiv medications. Just POC and white men. Sends a wide spread message that they’re somehow immune. Which is highly irresponsible and racially biased because they do in fact catch HIV and other STDs.
You can take medication to decrease the viral load; which will make it untransmittable. It’s not a death sentence. It’s not highly contagious if you take your medicine.
We're getting ooooooold... I remember when this first came out. How it changed collecting/checking/testing blood. They used to talk about not sharing needles. A disease fascinating and frightening... I remember Chris Rock doing a standup special and at one point he was talking about missing work cause his aids was acting up. But you feel these moments of 🤯 cause I remember when HIV was considered a death sentence. It makes sense when you think about time moving forward, progress and that humanity would eventually get a hold on it. But it still gives you the occasional shiver reflecting on the living experience and seeing the world change.
I remember that time. There was a teacher at my school back then who was diagnosed with HIV. This was back in the mid to late 80’s and there were so many unknowns back then. Parents were scared that their kids would get infected with it. He taught 7th and 8th grade PE and music and I was in 3rd at the time. So I didn’t have much contact with him unless he filled in for my teacher. When he did parents lost their shit and I guess for the time they were right. People accused him of being gay, a male prostitute, a drug addict. You name it. How did he get infected? Blood donation. He had to have an emergency appendectomy and lost enough blood to warrant needing some. And back then blood donations weren’t tested for HIV yet. I myself had to be tested for it when I got a cold that wouldn’t go way by the time it should’ve. Reason being is that I was given a blood transfusion when I was 12 hours old because my blood was too thick. That was in 1982 when HIV was extremely new. The backlash I got even as a then 4th grader sucked. Even though I was negative, people still assumed things of both me and my parents. I’ve been tested several times after that because again, the unknowns. Only I never told anyone about being tested again because I hated people for the first time I was tested. It sucked to say the least.

I’m glad that someone came up with medications to help prevent infections. I just wish it didn’t have to be so expensive. Not every country has national healthcare and not every person outside of those countries has access to healthcare. Truvada for example is around $2,000 without insurance. Who can afford that? I think we also need better sex education in schools. There’s still far too many people, especially younger people, that have never been taught about sex. Not just where babies come from either. I’m talking about the emotional and physical aspects as well as the potential outcomes. My nephews school just hands out condoms but doesn’t tell kids how to use them properly. How are they going to work if not used correctly?

I really like this channel and its content, a lot of useful information, one thing that would make it even better if it would have more materials related to non-cis people, and different kind of biological diversity in sex and gender. But still, thank you for all the materials provided!
There is also a higher need to spread the information that undetectable means untransmittable. This can reduce the stigma and when there is lesser stigma, more people can get tested and get treated, which means less new infections as it becomes untransmittble. To fight this virus effectively, reducing the stigma is the key.
Great video Jonathan but…..it does not really contain the information the title suggests it would. I was expecting some information on how HIV affects different body systems and organs (especially if untreated but also for long term patients on successful treatment). Title is misleading. Apart from that this is an excellent video.
I'm so grateful for how far they've come with treatment. Going from no treatment at all to 1 pill 1x a day w little to no side effects while being very highly effective is a major feat. It's hard to believe HIV has been around in the general population for 45 years now. With luck and God's grace maybe they will find a cure in another 20 years. That would be wonderful! 😊
Proper needle disposal is very important
God it’d have been so easy for them to even put it in a water bottle or something:(
My sister in-law used to manage a hotel in Aransas Pass Texas. I heard her telling her sister in-law about being careful especially when taking off the dirty sheets bedspreads and pillows because the junkies just drop their shit right where they use. They don't think or care about about throwing it in the trashcan.
@@jasonwarren3999 luckily I worked in high end hotels so our junkies were discreet.

AIDS seemed to be spreading much quicker, and people seemed to be dying much faster. Ryan White was diagnosed at 13 after a blood transfusion, and I don’t think he contracted HIV at 5 years old?”
Your body everyday eliminates cells and produce new ones.
I wondered this too, it seemed so much more rapid in the 80s, only a few short years of HIV before it progressed to AIDS
According to many scientists, which include Kary Mullins, there was no evidence that HIV caused aids, and if takes example 6 years in order to get aids then the whole 80's is wrong, also Luc Montagnier talk about it, stated even your body with proper nutrition naturally eliminates the virua

This video is perfect. I will watch again along with other research.
I homeschool and I have beginning teens. So I want to start teaching about these diseases.
When I first got braces, of course I had cuts and sores in my mouth while I was still getting used to them. 12 year old me thought I got "mouth herpes" from my braces. My mother is a nurse, and I remember her cracking up while she explained to me that's not how that worked. 16 years later and I find that hilarious 😂😂😂😂
You gave me a good laugh, thank you!

These videos related to sexual health are soooo informative especially since most of us didn’t have proper education related to these important topics and knowledge so thank you for covering these topics 😊

Thanks for making this video, I am always thinking about this virus, looking forward to making an HIV vaccine or cure in the future. I really have a high level of HIV phobia.
Please make a video on potential HIV cure or vaccine for more information on this topic.
Why be afraid of it? Just avoid gay sex and intravenous drug abuse.
@@user-qjvqfjvDid you not watch the video? Straight men and women can also get it. Stop being ignorant.
@@Weiner-Worm You can also have a meteorite fall on your head and kill you, but the incidence is so low that it's not even worth mentioning. Negative outcomes are very difficult to mitigate 100%, so if you avoid the statistically highest risks, that's what matters.
@@user-qjvqfjv The risk is still there. I absolutely do not want to get HIV. Even with a low risk, that is too much of a risk for me. But you do you. If you want to bang people without protection, that's your life and your problem.
In Africa we don't have gay people statistically 1:20 are gay buy we have more hiv patients so explain to me?
I'm so bless to never contracted this virus but i have back home in africa a lot of relatif and freind who contracted this.i 'm not sexually no more active but i have young children therefore i like to be always informe about it.thank you so much for the informations.
Nicely done, facts and knowledge will prevail over misinformation and fear when it comes to HIV! People can still live healthy and happy lives as people living with HIV - there is hope!

I always thought you caught it from comment sections, but turns out that I was thinking of cancer.
You can catch EbolaAIDS from comments sections, this is a known fact. Quit spreading lies 😂
I got tested for STDs. Wasn't sure what was included in the blood tests. Just glad to know I'm negative.
I recommend (from experience) getting tested for trichomoniasis. It is very often asymptomatic but having it can increase your risk for other STIs. It's very easy to treat and it will go away with treatment.
Informative video. Thank you. 👍🏻

Don't forget tatoos. Decades ago, I met a Lesbian that got HIV/AIDS from a tatoo of a rose the size of a dime on her upper arm.
Nowadays the tattoo needles are disposable. Tattoo studios have very high standards - just don’t get your tattoo from anybody who is not a professional artist

Very informative you talk and everyone understands
Many people downplay the persistent existence of HIV. That neglect . . . is alarming!
Not alarming at all. What is alarming is that a child needs 35 vaccinations before graduation. Now that is alarming.
@@SphericallyChallenged What are you talking about?
@@godnyx117 Quite simple. To a mind like yours it must be overwhelming. Save yourself the hassle.
@@SphericallyChallenged How is that alarming? Are you those special folk who don't believe in vaccines?

I love this topic coz it hits deep. I have HIV and are living a positive life instead of focusing on the person who raped me. It got bad when I got TB Adenitis in 2021 after stopping my ART program assuming I was ok. I contracted the disease through sexual contact at one of the out of town, weekend trips in campus. Out of your report, I think the transmission was made more transmissible out of the rape and aggression. Since 2021, I've been consistent with my drugs. Keep the message going 👍🏿😊

Actions should have consequences.
@@user-qjvqfjv Shut up heartless demon. We're only human.
When I lived in the USA, Atripla was almost $2000 a month. Thankfully I had excellent health insurance which paid 100%. I moved to Nicaragua 10 years ago. Everything pertaining HIV is 100% free in Nicaragua.

A friend of mine who has HIV keeps on testing negative on rapid HIV tests. What could be the reason? This happened on many occasions. An answer would be appreciated.
Is your friend on antiretrovirals? Successful antiretroviral therapy will lead to an undetectable infection
Interesting, I'd like to see an answer to this
It means viral load is undetectable. They are not contagious.
No rapid test must be positive because the antigen stays forever doesn’t matter how high his virus amount is
Could also be an elite controller
Bro I trust you more than doctors fr you have a way of giving trust with how you speak and explain thinga
He is a doctor.
I'm in my 60's & recently (3 wks ago) had to have 2 units transfused during a hospital stay. I'm wondering if I should wait a couple of months & get tested? I know the donated blood is usually safe, but ya never know for sure. 🤔🤔

I’ve heard it’s possible to spread HIV through kissing because of bleeding gums from gingivitis. Think that kind of blood contact holds any weight?
Definitely possible.
It is possible.
Source: CDC.gov
"Very rarely, transmission has occurred if both partners have sores or bleeding gums.
You can’t transmit HIV through closed-mouth or “social” kissing with someone who has HIV.
You can’t transmit HIV through saliva."
I really like this channel and its content, a lot of useful information, one thing that would make it even better if it would have more materials related to non-cis people, and different kind of biological diversity in sex and gender. But still, thank you for all the materials provided!
Nailed it again. Thanks!
There is also a higher need to spread the information that undetectable means untransmittable. This can reduce the stigma and when there is lesser stigma, more people can get tested and get treated, which means less new infections as it becomes untransmittble. To fight this virus effectively, reducing the stigma is the key.
Very informative post. Thank you. 😀
That's so great! Thank you for watching the video. Wishing you a happy and joyful new day😊😊
Since I entered highschool, I had big fear of being having this virus. It scares me alot. Now I consider myself asexual living 29 years old. Virgin 😢
Great video Jonathan but…..it does not really contain the information the title suggests it would. I was expecting some information on how HIV affects different body systems and organs (especially if untreated but also for long term patients on successful treatment). Title is misleading. Apart from that this is an excellent video.
Gracias por el video Jonathan ❤

I'm so grateful for how far they've come with treatment. Going from no treatment at all to 1 pill 1x a day w little to no side effects while being very highly effective is a major feat. It's hard to believe HIV has been around in the general population for 45 years now. With luck and God's grace maybe they will find a cure in another 20 years. That would be wonderful! 😊
Well presented. Best.
