I'm not a Kohler fan either but have heard the command is decent.

I'm kind of mixed between B&S and Kohler's. I can say that I love the older pre-intek Single Cyl's, but I've also dealt with two Command V-Twins which tend to be quite reliable. I believe both companies have their good models, and their bad models.

Some of these engines were offered with a CDI style ignition, they had a lot of problems.

Hopefully you're using multigrade oil and not straight 30w.
