Gone but not forgotten in their past passengers. Thank you NWA for all the flights I had with you. Memories will not be forgotten.

I knew what I was going to be and who I was going to work for when I was just 5 years old. It was my first trip to Japan to visit my mother's family. We flew Northwest Orient. I applied to ONE airline. The ONLY airline!!! l achieved my dream. I'm so proud to say I will forever be a part of the greatest airline family EVER! Love to you all!!!
As an employee for this company for 30 years, it was a bitter sweet moment when I had to leave, but I have incredible memories of most of the people I worked with, the accomplishments made, and incredible experiences that will be with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for this video.

I spent the mid-‘90s thru the late-2000s on Northwest aircraft regularly. Sometimes multiple legs each week for my job at the time. NWA was a huge part of my life then. Rickety DC-9s that were immaculate, fancy new A319s & 320s, and everything Mesaba had. The airline fit me like my favorite shoes, and its people felt like my friends. I could almost write a book about my NWA experiences. My career changed right before the merger, and my flying dropped from weekly to once or twice a year. And it’s not the same. I still have my same battle-worn carry-on, and I still proudly rock my WorldPerks tags, and dozens of ratty green Mesaba gate check tags still hanging on for dear life. Every once in a while a flight attendant will notice. Most don’t. It’s different now. I’m a number, not a person. I’m glad I came across this video today. Thanks for posting it. Rest well, old friend. And to the NWA people from that era that may see this, thank you. You did make a difference.
Being an employee for 18 years in cities live New York's LaGuardia, Detroit Metro and ultimately Traverse City, MI, I miss the hell out of it. Wish I could bring it all back people. Enjoy the memories.

My first ever flight was on Northwest when I was one in 2005. I was flying from Baltimore to Detroit on the beloved DC-9. My parents first flight was on Northwest when they came to the US from India in 1998. They were on the DC-10 from Mumbai to Amsterdam and another NW plane I forgot. Nevertheless, I will never forget you, Northwest. Northwest is the greatest airline in history and its not just because I’m biased. It’s a fact. I’ll always love Northwest. Now, when I look at how flying in general is less fun, I feel the impact on Northwest. I love you Northwest. Thank you for flying billions of people around the world safely and comfortably. Spent 18 yrs of my life working for NWA , in Minneapolis and Atlanta as a Aviation Maintenance Technician. I’d would have started my 32 yr . But management screwed us all for money in their pockets.

My Step Dad was the a jack of all trades Northwest Orient manager in Las Vegas in the mid to late 80's. Between the years 87/89 as a result I was had the privilege of going into the back area's by just mentioning Jim's name. A co-worker friend of his took me out on day to a NWO Charter 747 on the other side of the airport. Prior to passengers boarding I had the opportunity to explore the whole section of the aircraft interior as if I was a passenger. I also got to visit the cockpit. Another time I was able to see the Air France pull up to a Delta gate from ground level. Talk about loud! Twice as loud as a 727 at the same distance. Those were neat times!
When ever I go to minneapolis I get mad its just not the same anymore I hate seeing the NW maintance hangers that I always loved seeing and dreamed of one day working there now wear the Delta colors. As fans of airlines we must never forget them as long as we do that they will never be gone

This is really a two part video if you know the history! At the first part it talks about the leveraged buyout. That was really when Al Checci and Wilson took over the airline back in 1989. Then as it continues it get to the NWA / Delta merger. I was surprised to hear my voice in the video running a checklist. At the end it goes thru the last of the freighters. I flew the second flight out the first day of the Anchorage base opening May 1, 1991. I was the Co-Pilot on the last freighter flight from Anchorage to Chicago December 26, 2009. That was the day the Anchorage base closed. It was a very sad day. But as mergers go the Northwest / Delta merger was probably the best in airline history.
Good times working at DTW as an ESE/ESC for 9 and a half years. It'll be ten years since working there come next month. It's sad to see how they got bought out.
Since DTW is my home airport, I flew Northwest in all but three of the times I've flown (though I've only flown around a dozen round trips). The other airlines I've flown were Spirit in 2004 (very lackluster) US Airways in 2008 (hated them) and Delta in 2011 (good service, TERRIBLE, HORRIBLY uncomfortable seats). My best memories of flying were as an unattended minor on Northwest. I will never forget those days long past now that all we have are terrible seats and tons of fees.

NW hired Japanese,Philippino,Hong Kong Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Thai, Singaporean,Malaysian and main land Chinese as flight attendants considering needs for local boardings. NW treasured good relationship with Asian people as a global airline. The name used to be Northwest Orient Airlines. After aquiring NW, DL got rid of asian cabin crew one after another by closing the bases. In 2020 Japanese crew had to leave the company after the closure of long lasted TYO base. I've been a flight attendant from 1979 to 2014. How I loved the red tails. I miss the Chili served in canteen on MSP training center so badly.

Just a correction. Northwest was not the launch customer for the 757. Eastern Airlines was the launch customer for the 757-200 and Condor was the launch customer for the 757-300. Also Northwest was just the launch customer for the 747-400, the video showed a 747-200.

Delta still has many 757-200s/-300s, A319/20s, and A330-200/-300 aircraft that used to fly with Northwest. I’ve flown on many of them, as well as the greatest of them all, the NW/DL 747-400 till its retirement in 2017/18.
Actually, Western was the oldest continuously operating airline in the U.S., dating its origins back to July 13, 1925. Western would be acquired by Delta 22 years before Northwest.
I worked for NWA for 38 years until the abolished my job just before I turned 60. Over time in many positions from the ramp to the hangers to cargo and into an office. But I was gone before they went bankrupt. Yes, Imiss them some, but bad management and the leveraged buyout did them in.

At one time NWA paid airplanes for in cash until Al and the gang sold them all off and mortgaged the company. Of course they all left with millions while people in my shoes lost everything! It was a different time period. It was still quite common to not have IFE’s in those day. Northwest would have installed newer IFE systems on their planned 787 aircraft (which, regrettably, never started due to the merger)
On the contrary, Delta actually became more recognized because of Northwest. Prior to the merger, you would have seen a relatively smaller presence of Delta aircraft at overseas airports. After they gained hubs at Amsterdam, Paris, and Tokyo Narita from Northwest, Delta started to become a truly global airline

+misled1982 Indeed; however, as you probably know, just like Northwest merging with (and eventually being taken over by) Delta, there were other airlines that found themselves in this situation as well. For example: Continental, which merged with United in 2002, then United taking over completely around 2009, right around the time Delta completely took over Northwest; AirTran and Southwest merging in 2010, then Southwest completely taking over at the end of last year; and long before that, in 1980, National and Pan-Am merging, with Pan-Am completely taking over in 1981. So, it's basically a matter of merger and takeover just to save one or both airlines from bankruptcy. Another recent case of this was US Airways, by 2009, merging with, then in August of last year, being completely taken over, by American.
But see, here's the thing that pisses off northerners: NWA had just exited bankruptcy. DAL was still in trouble, and borrowed against a merger with NWA to get out of it. NWA would have been fine on its own, and the thanks they got for saving Delta was to have their brand name erased. NWA should have been the surviving carrier.

I concur today being 2017 would still have NWA in the skies despite the economic conditions. NWA you will always have a place in my heart. I dont get the end of the video...I mean, people carve the company's name into their hearts...please nobody works for free and companies get rid of people like dirty diapers...there is no victimes here, and NWA was acquired by another company! employees were also aquiared or sent home to retire with a compensention, so no one owns nobody nothing, yeah it sucks becuse we give our best, spending time away from home and loved ones and all that, but we do that because we like it, nobody puts a gun again our heads to do it (there is a difference between being a good employee, and "sleep with the company" )

+misled1982 Indeed; however, as you probably know, just like Northwest merging with (and eventually being taken over by) Delta, there were other airlines that found themselves in this situation as well. For example: Continental, which merged with United in 2002, then United taking over completely around 2009, right around the time Delta completely took over Northwest; AirTran and Southwest merging in 2010, then Southwest completely taking over at the end of last year; and long before that, in 1980, National and Pan-Am merging, with Pan-Am completely taking over in 1981. So, it's basically a matter of merger and takeover just to save one or both airlines from bankruptcy. Another recent case of this was US Airways, by 2009, merging with, then in August of last year, being completely taken over, by American.
But see, here's the thing that pisses off northerners: NWA had just exited bankruptcy. DAL was still in trouble, and borrowed against a merger with NWA to get out of it. NWA would have been fine on its own, and the thanks they got for saving Delta was to have their brand name erased. NWA should have been the surviving carrier.
Excellent post. You are spot on ! It was NWA that had billions in cash . Delta was this money sucking airline that always was at the bottom of the barrel of all US legacy carriers. I concur today being 2017 would still have NWA in the skies despite the economic conditions. NWA you will always have a place in my heart. To the crews at PVD, BOS, TVC, and DTW, who made it on time every time! Thank you all NWA for showing me the world . You were truly the best in the business in the USA ! Long live the red tail !
