- On the tropical island of Bali, Indonesia, there are homes tucked into the jungle that look like something out of a fairytale. They're designed to have soaring roof lines, few walls or windows - and nearly everything is fashioned from bamboo. Seth Doane reports.
Only foreigners would live in a house built with light materials like that. Natives like me would prefer to live in a concrete home if our budget permits. I've experienced being hit by typhoon/hurricane, earthquake, flood so many times that there's this feeling of uneasiness whenever I step in a bamboo house. That's also the reason why in the Philippines you'd only see these bamboo huts as a gazebo and not as a main dwelling.
In contrast to Philippines, there's no hyphoons/hurricanes on Bali and most equatorial countries like Indonesia. But anyway, this gorgeous work of art is surely made just for amusement of the more fortunate.
I live in California. No way could we do this open floor plan and not wake up dead, robbed, or set ablaze. Possibly all three come to think of it. I would like to see something that uses bamboo, hemp, and limestone in California.

@@KadorCitizen what?? there are plenty of homewrecking Thypoons in indonesia. usually occur during feb-may, it specially bad in southern sea/indian ocean like in Bali. i know because i live in Pelabuhan ratu indonesia.

I'm here looking for ideas to build a home with better, more sustainable materials. I may still use a steel structure but combine with bamboo for flexibility. Other materials I'm studying are hempcrete and adobe. I still love concrete though, just the beauty of the material and how effective it is. I just discovered a company called Equitone, they create great fiber cement panels.
I was just disgusted at the prefab, vinyl siding crap being sold in my area. It's insulting but that's all people know.

its not stupid idea.. Even they are rich, they choose to live and value the use of nature and trying to think up what its capable of. It was a nice and very smart idea. This family will live happily the way they wanted to be.... so close to the nature.. . .

Nicely made, I would like to have one of these in my home country in Thailand. From my experiences termites would eat all within a few years!
Maybe it was not being treated well...
It has native protected technique to float bamboo on water for several months and fungisida to keep long duration time to use. We usually do preserving bamboo as our local wisdom.

amazing design, bamboo is a very fast grow plant, it can help us to protect our forest. but the most important thing about bamboo architecture is how to preserve the material, because ypu dont want to build your house every 2 years.

Beautiful architecture but now all that is needed is to build a home in the u.s and test it out if it succeeds with having AC and windows protecting from burgleres maybe there will be a change in how homes are build.

it was treated first to remove the starch that the termites eat.
Only the well off can admire y the rich investors; we’ll just generally settle for shanty kind y when it breaks we’ll build easily y still costly depending on the small budget as lowly farmers y rural dwellers
