I’m a therapist. I grieve for this beautiful young woman. Young people who believe they are transgender NEED deep, skillful therapeutic care. If the emotional/psychological issues are addressed and resolved and the person still believes they are transgender, so be it. But so, so often, there are emotional/psychological issues - often in the family system - that are manifesting in the rejection of the self/the body. No one should make any decision in life - great or small - from a basis of self-hatred. This is consistent as I work with trans adolescents and their families: abject hatred of their femininity (for girls). This needs to be explored, not “fixed” by transitioning to male.

When I was a teen, I wanted to be male because I was bullied for not wearing make-up and being "feminine" enough. I also kept hearing about women having to wear high heels to work and just hated the thought so much. I'm honestly glad that was in the early 2000s, when we weren't as "woke". I might have made a terrible mistake I would still live to regret.
I still almost never wear make-up and never have worn high heels in my life, but I don't want to be a man. I just want to be a woman who is not a stereotype.
It mostly makes me mad and sad when they already label small kids as trans because they aren't a walking stereotype. I remember when nobody worried much about a tomboy phase in a prepubescent girl.

  • @kdbrown777

This is why therapy is so important for teenagers. Sometimes parents are quick to want to "fix" their child, and see psychiatry as the easiest option. Medication can be extremely helpful, but it is not a cure-all. It should only be used to help calm symptoms so the client can actually work through their problems.

So I agree with to a degree.
As someone with bpd I can tell u when I tried to get rid of my meds cus "it's drugs!" I saw changes right away, therefore I couldn't function in therapy and could barely focus.
      And tbh it was recently.
I didn't take them for a week and because of it, I couldn't get out of bed, it triggered my eating disorders and suicide thoughts.
When I told it to my therapis he called my doctor, now I had 2 options in that moment either going to the hospital or keep on taking them and on time, and lemme talk u, the change was and is crazy it worked like magic, I started to see how much calmer I feel, I started talking more, and eating normally! It was the moment when it hit me how important medications are, and in way, underrated. U hear a lot of hate when it comes to that and a lot of horror stories about it, but like if u go a bit deeper u will find more ppl just like me.
Obviously it's not an only fix but sometimes it should be the first option because when ur brain is unbalanced no amount of therapy could help (speaking from experience as I said)
I DON'T THINK THERAPY ISNT GOOD!
It's great and been helping me a lot!
What I've learned from the recent weeks is that, the right combination between therapy and meds can be literly life saving!

    • @Fortheloveoflore
      @Fortheloveoflore 5 років тому +248

TooltheWetSprocket Not taking hormones won’t make her voice go back to normal. The reason why men have deeper voices than women is because the testosterone causes the vocal cords to become “longer” than a woman’s, so the slower vibration causes a deeper voice. You can’t really reverse that.

@Chatter Box Yeah gender fluid is just teenagers going through puberty and feeling like they need to be 100% stereotypical gender while in reality it's just your personality. And they feel this safety and reassurement when they go together calling themselves this. Now we at the point where they are forcing speech and ideologies through fear of being "canceled/fired/shunned". All because children are growing up in a world that fucks so much with your mental and they dont get the help they need.

@Chatter Box Im a 20 year old male and still struggling with my gender identity but I feel more confident in it compared to a month ago. My mental problems made me unhappy with life, I felt like I was missing something. Add on to that I dont like cars, sports, typical male things. Love female clothing and dressing up as one and make up. I was drunk every day to stop myself from thinking about my actual problems in life. And started feeling trans. Now I only drink in the weekend for fun and am working on the problems and see that I am happy with my sex/gender you see some guys cosplay female characters wear makeup and still are dudes. Yes I could call myself fluid. But I know my sex is male and can like feminine stuff. I'm just a reverse tomboy, because I still find being a dude easier and more myself. Went on a tangent but your story felt quite similar with the jealousy and that interests dont make you a certain gender.

8:48 This right here is so powerful. I remember growing up in a very sexist household and at 4 years old praying to God I would wake up with a penis. I hated everything about being a girl at that time. Then as I got older I realized that I didn’t hate being a girl. I hated how I was forced to express my femininity. Knowing that interests, colors, activities, careers don’t have a gender changed everything for me. It actually made me proud to be a woman because I felt like it was my responsibility to be true to myself and represent my definition of womanhood.

God's definition of femininity is very different from mankind's and does not involve heels, makeup, and acquiring praise and/or lust for our outward appearance. Likewise, helping others is more praiseworthy in God's eyes than accumulating excess possessions. ua-cam.com/video/86dsfBbZfWs/v-deo.html

Freud called this stage in a girl's development "penis envy," lol. He may have been right. Freud believed most women don't remember this stage because it is at about 2 or 3 years old and they repress those feelings. If the girl gets through this stage successfully she will accept her lack of a penis and when she grows up she will enter into a relationship with a man and he can "share" his penis with her through sex and marriage. If she doesn't get through this stage successfully, Freud thought it could cause her to become a lesbian.

I really empathize with Elle- especially when she said she didn’t have to be a certain way to be a woman. Our situations seem similar. I’ve questioned my gender since I was about 10 years old. I’m now 18, and after a long time contemplating that I might be FTM, I realized that just because I am attracted to females, because I am not feminine, because I hate dresses and skirts, feel more comfortable in ‘masculine’ groups, my personal expression is gender non-conforming , etc. does NOT necessarily mean I am trans. I might be less feminine, but that doesn’t make me less of a female. I contemplated so many gender identities growing up in the midst of mental health issues and trauma. And now that I’m healing from my trauma and issues I realize that I don’t have to change to be accepted by myself or anyone else. I am who I am. I was so preoccupied by the idea of ‘boy vs girl’ I never took into consideration that it’s not that simple- every boy is not alike and neither is every girl. I wish I could’ve realized sooner, but I’m glad I finally realized, because I could’ve had to go through the stress and pain Elle is currently going through if I decided to transition when I was younger. My heart goes out to Elle (and Blaire too, she’s great). This was a nice video.

Douglas Murray talks about the damaging impact saying every tomboy girl/ feminine boy is a transgender person is having on young gay people and that adults who push children towards being transgender (parents, teachers, health care, etc.) need to stop. And, allowing children who are just at the beginning of really learning about themselves to make life altering decisions is of course a terrible idea.
Puberty is very confusing for everyone. I honestly don't think 18 is old enough to decide... even a tattoo can be removed and we have to wait till 18 to get them but the damage hormones do can never be erased.

Growing up I was a very tomboyish girl. Many times I was even called “young man”. When I was 8-9 I thought I wanted to be a boy. Looking back I think I just had some very “masculine” interests at the time, I had no idea what transgender was. Perhaps if I was surrounded with the internet and groups of trans people I would have thought I was trans, because I was so impressionable. I can definitely see how this could happen to other young people. Best wishes to you Elle, you seem like such a sweet person ☺️ thank you for sharing your story.

And nowadays people won’t say that it’s okay to like things that are considered masculine or feminine, so the first people that speak to them about it are people who think that if you like feminine things as a boy then you’re actually a trans girl.

The people trying to silence anyone that feels they made the wrong choice & need to detransition are the biggest hypocrites alive. This needs to be discussed & accepted as a very real possibility. Detransitioning is going to be a lot more common, in the years to come, because of how people push transitioning into kids. Many of these kids are doing it as a trend or attention. Literally changing your sex, with medication & a lot of times serious surgeries, shouldn’t ever be taken lightly or a “trend”.

I felt at a loss and simply couldn’t connect to my daughter on this subject. How am I as a father supposed to hold a nuanced and balanced conversation with my daughter on something we both barely understand? We were simply talking past each other and not really understanding our individual positions. Blair’s videos have opened the flood gates for me and my daughter. We have deep conversation and we don’t always agree but for the first time we hear each other and actually have an understanding of what the fuck is happening. Elle, and any other individual who is unhappy with their voice can go to a speech-language pathologist to change the pitch of their voice in a SAFE way! Trying to modify the pitch of your voice is very doable, but should be done with research based approaches and medically monitored with instrumental testing/imaging to avoid any kind of vocal injury!
Talking outside of your fundamental frequency (the ideal pitch for your body) without the assistance of a professional (a speech-language pathologist) could lead to a bunch of voice disorders long term so it is better to seek the help of a medical professional instead of a vocal coach or voice actor!

I am married to a straight man, I am beautiful, and I have a son. Plus I have enough health problems to worry about. I also have a perspective in life that wouldn’t really approve transition as a solution and I would have regretted that for sure even if I liked presenting as a man instead. I think for me, I saw that my brother got more positive attention than I did, my dad was the nice parent, and I think I got the impression that life was better for boys than for girls. I related more to Simba, Little Foot and Aladdin than any Disney Princesses, etc, I liked boys’ adventures better than girls, and their role in society seemed more fun. In retrospect I think I am just broken, and I have a sort of repressed misogyny that says good girls are lame and not like me. I wanted to be the best I could be but it wasn’t working as a girl so I got anxious and wanted to be like my brother instead. I think a lot of these people who regret transition are like this, and what actually needs to be done is spiritual healing and probably some anxiety treatment

@@mikayla9501 In the past they used to teach children whom were left handed that they were stupid and forced them to write right handed.
I see the treatment they use on children/teenagers/young adults and it is still literally that.
You like many other kids are wired differently and to partake in this society you have to conform to the immesurably high standards/pressure society demands from you.
So they make you fit in with drugs, instead of teaching you to learn from your own behaviour.
I had mental issues myself and for me (not recommended for anyone that actually needs it), but for me i have refused treatment.
Best decision i have ever made in my life, and you will learn when you are older that the ultimate contentment with the self comes when you are able to identify and articulate your own issues and deal with them.
Focus on what you want to do and if you don't know figure it out or ask adults because we've all been there. You are at an age with a world of possibility ahead of you.
And like me you might figure out that you never needed medication to begin with and that a lot of treatment for example for ADHD, mild autism, depression is being driven by the subscription pad, instead of helping by shaping them and make them understand themselves and their own behaviours.
You'll be ok. I will say, that as a former ritalin user myself. It is completely ok if you need it (can't estimate your situation from here), it does have its uses for focussing (dose should never be more than 80 mg a day, if you are on 40 MG like i was that is completely ok). But feel free to quit as well. And at some point you will find out, you don't need it. Don't use it in the weekends and in the holidays, then go to a few classes without it. You might notice no difference at all.

You can be charged with a felony such as murder, robbery, assault in most states at age 12 and in some states as young as ten years. Why? Because the law says a person of that age has the ability to form the required reasoning to plan the crime and more importantly to understand exactly what they were doing. Further, and this is key, the law in most states says that children of the same age we are talking about when it comes to gender transformation have the mental ability to understand the consequences of their actions. So, if a young person can understand the consequences of being the getaway driver in a robbery, whey are they too young to understand the consequences of putting puberty on hold?

@@SiobhanS1868 I agree with you. In some states, people as young as 14 can be charged as an adult for felony crimes. My point was that society has an odd view of what children can and cannot be responsible for. If a 16-year-old is late to school five times in some states the principal of the school and bend them over and spank them like a child. If the same 16-year-old gets mad about that and punches the principal in the face 2 seconds after the spanking is done, they can be charged as an adult for felony assault. We need to make up our minds about how much can a child reason and figure out the consequences of their actions. A 17-year-old boy can be told by his parents that they have decided to have him circumcised. There is nothing wrong with his penis nor foreskin - the parents have just decided they like the way a circumcised penis looks. No matter how much he protests, almost every urologist in the US would prescribe a Xanax for him to take before he leaves home, put him on a procedure table, and slice off his foreskin - even if he had told the urologist very loudly that he did not want it done. If that same 17-year-old came back the next day and trashed the urologist's office in revenge, he'd be charged as an adult in criminal court. We need to make up our minds.

This part really resonated with me. I grew up in a very very sexist environment that had very strongly held traditional views of what it means to be a woman. I didn't identify with and disagreed with those views so much I began to think I wasn't a woman. It coincided with a time in my life filled with mental issues and uncertainty. Those two environments combined I believe is what caused me to really believe I wasn't a woman. Flash to now, and I have a much more healthy understanding of and love for my femininity. Blaire can you address the teachers pushing trans " education " to children.
I have a very feminine 12 year old boy with asd, limited verbal skills, learning disabilities etc, that doesn't wear girls clothes ( I've never offered them either) but loves pink, long hair, and playing with girls. My son's teacher used him as an axample on a zoom lesson of a child pretransition so I stopped her mid lesson and removed my son and later she explained that she and my son had " talked" about it ( odd considering he's basically nonverbal but ok) and my son was a girl and I needed to let him be herself. I did go to children's services because I called it grooming but was denied help, the principal had my back sort-of and reprimanded her for being inappropriately involved but how many kids are learning they are trans from teachers? My son may choose his way as an adult but he's a child that had no idea or care about gender because he's disabled he just wants to play with his gal Pals because they are kinder than 12 year old boys, he's sensitive because he has a sensory processing disorder not gender dysphoria. How would that inferring have directed another child? I know other parents who have had similar interactions as alot of asd kids have undefined gender boundaries and it's scary

When I was a teen in the 90s, being gay was trendy. Kids, my friends, people I knew very well and loved, would be gay for a month or a year and then all of a sudden they were straight again. And yes, this happened a lot amongst the kids who didn't have great relationships with their parents. So, I think it is a way for kids to rebel. There isn't anything transphobic about that at all. I believe in her original video she said she got a "old lesbian" (does not matter, maybe it does) which more told her about her problems instead of listening to Elle and gave out the hormone perscription like on the same day...
Currently in my country it's very strict and slow if you want to get it paid via social security. You need one or two different psychiatrist for up to a year to get the go for hormones from a doctor and I think you have to be an adult. At least a few years ago. This can be terrible especially for children. I totally get it, avoid the wrong puperty and the chance of beeing passable is so much higher... but when the psychiatrists or even not as qualified persons have a agenda and are one-sided, it just can go wrong. I had thought about it for 10 years before taking testosterone and she only thought about it for a few years. I was seeing psychiatrists and psychologists for 5 years before the decision was made. Kids who think they are trans should wait til they are 18-20. Transitioning is not like finding out you are gay ie. ‘when you know you’re gay, you’re gay’. Because if in the future turns out you’re straight/bi instead, you can always go back, it isn’t that forgiving once you’ve transitioned.
Trans folks, and I mean ALL trans folks should sit down with adults and think about their future. I personally think, if I- in the future want a kid of my own (in my 30-40s), I wouldn’t be able to if I transition at 12-15. I can WAIT til I’m 18-20, freeze my sperm/egg and save it. I socially transitioned at 15 and medically transitioned at 17. I'm now in my 20's, I have a very different/more mature concept of my gender identity than I did back then; however, I wouldn't go back for anything in this world, as I probably would've ended my own life otherwise, it was an extremely disparaging time to exist.
Perhaps it's not a matter of age (as age doesn't equal maturity), as it is a matter of personal intent in wanting to transition in the first place and the disparities we might face with our gender.
Is it due to stigma? Social expectation? Or is it something more innate, like my case and many others', for example. Though I've always been mentally mature at a very young age, which could be another critical asset. The only thing I suggest is to not base it around age at all, it means nothing when people are so different from each other.

**"you dont have to be a certain way to be a woman"** is such an important statement, and i honestly live by it, being someone that went through a lot of confusion relating to my gender.
when i was a kid, i genuinely felt very disconnected from femininity to the point where i was *convinced* i would not develop into a woman when i grew up. it took a lot of questioning things, and eventually accepting the defeat of reality, until eventually i realised, i don't have to be "feminine", but that doesn't mean i have to stop being "female". it's like, there are infinite ways to be male or female, and if the vessel you're in doesn't actually cause you great distress, jumping to conclusions and making drastic decisions is not really the way to go. i'm now on the most part very happy to be in a female body, even though the way i act, dress, present, or the interests i have and choices i make are on the most part not typically feminine. i'm so glad i didn't grow up surrounded by people who actively push for transitioning in childhood or early teenage years, or even seeing content that makes it seem like any degree of not conforming implies that you're trans and should do something about it, because i'm sure that it would have got to me when i was at my most uncertain, and i would easily have lost a lot about myself if id got on hormones at that time also... this is just in my personal case, anyway.
also, Elle, thank you for giving your story and being brave to express your truth! it must have been a very difficult thing to go through at such an early age, when there's so much unknown still about life itself...

What she said, "You don't have to be a certain way to be a woman," was also one of the thoughts that helped me to accept myself as female. I think as a child there was very much sexist stereotypes about how "men and women are so different" and how men are logical and women are more emotional, and just the way children my age would argue over who was better, boys or girls, and I came to the conclusion that boys were better. I didn't like girls, because of the stereotypes I had internalized, and I didn't feel like I could relate. So "I must be different," I thought, "I must actually be a boy in the wrong body." However, when I got to middleschool and these stereotypes weren't stressed as much or even really talked about, because at that school no one really cared, and parents had stopped buying pink, girly stuff for their daughters and instead the teenage girls were making their own decisions about what they wanted to wear and what they liked. I began to realize that all the young women (and older women) around me were unique. There were different kinds of women, and I could be whatever kind I felt like. It was that freedom to still be myself and not try to fit into a mold that allowed me to be content with being a woman.

I’m a mother of a trans man. For me personally, “dealing” with the reality of my child feeling miserable and so conflicted about who they were, was difficult.
All I could see was this beautiful, talented person that was full of light. Always made us laugh. Someone who I was proud of and honestly wished I could have been more like at that age. I felt like such a failure when I learned that my oldest daughter was trans. Not because I’m close minded. Not because I’m transphobic or whatever people might think. But because I felt like I had not conveyed my love clearly enough or supported enough or just wasn’t there enough. Now the “child” I’ve raised and envisioned a future for , hates who they are and now, will no longer exist. At least that’s how I felt in that moment. It all sounds very selfish now. But for me, as a mom, it was almost like my child had died.
Years have past now and I see things differently but my heat breaks and memories flood back to when I had a teenager that was going thru so much. Prayers to Elle.
I was introduced to this channel a couple of years ago by my youngest daughter, for no reason other than Blaire’s world views. My daughter is heterosexual but has the maturity to see past labels and loves people just for who they are.
I’m a new subscriber now. I’ve only watched from time to time. So maybe you’ve covered the topic....but do you often hear from the parents of trans men and women? What that experience was like for them too? I know there are support groups out there. I live in a well accepted LGBT community now but I didn’t previously. I just think it’s important to share, when family members “struggle” to accept the changes a trans family member goes thru, it doesn’t mean they don’t love them any less. As a mom, I just don’t want to see my “kids” hurting in any way, shape or form. And if we have the knowledge or experience it may be an easier adjustment for everyone.
Sorry so long winded here!! 🙈 Thanks for all you are doing Blaire!! Appreciate you sharing this topic. ❤️

It's not just a trans issue, it's a whatever it takes to stand out issue. I read a story yesterday of a mother who has set up an Instagram account for her TODDLER. What kind of parent does that? Apparently the kid has 100K followers already.

My heart breaks for her. I think she still has a passably feminine face, but when she talks people will immediately think she’s just a MtF. I detransitioned 3 months into T, but I’m lucky. My voice hadn’t changed as much in that time, but it is slightly... gruffer I think? Like deeper and harsher, but I have learned to adjust my vocal chords to make it sound almost like it used to. I can’t get rid of that rough and bass-y undertone tho, and that kills me some days. I rarely talk in public despite still being able to comfortably raise my pitch to sound more feminine.
Also there’s the “clit worm” as I call it for some reason lmao. Good for pleasure, looks gross as fuck to me. You clit starts growing within the first week(sometimes even within the first 48hrs!) of starting T and so you can imagine how different it looks now even just from 3 months. ~1in doesn’t sound like much, but when you’ve come to terms with being a cis woman, it’s really distressing to see it there. I’m blessed to have a wonderful girlfriend who doesn’t give a single shit about my baby dick, but I’ll never stop being self conscious about it. I gave myself my dysphoria like a dumbass lmao

I also detransitioning (almost) 3 months into T, and I can relate to this "gruffer" voice. It's not too much deeper since i've focused on speaking from my head voice again, but it definitely has a rougher and more bass-y undertone too, which i really don't like :/

When I was 14, I cut my hair short, rarely wore makeup, and genuinely thought I was a boy for around 3 months. I could've transitioned, but I am SO GLAD I didn't. I am so proud of being a woman. I still don't wear makeup or dresses (outside of my Irish Dance competitions) or high heels (stupid female torture devices), but I'm me. And I'm a woman.
If you are under ANY doubts about transitioning, PLEASE hold off until you are an adult. Don't let _anyone_ (parents, other family or friends - whether online or in-person) pressure you into changing who you are. That is YOUR decision. YOU are the only one who has to live with the consequences of changing your body - and the same goes for tattoos, piercings, or even just changing your hair. Don't do it just because of pressure, otherwise you will seriously regret it. Something as drastic as changing your gender may not be permanent, but it is NOT a decision to be taken lightly. If you make a mistake, you can feel like you've wasted YEARS of your life presenting as someone you were not. Switching back and forth can prove to be traumatic on the mind and the physical body.
Wait until you're 18, and if you're still _absolutely positive_ independent of anyone else's desires, then do what you feel is right for you. You'll thank yourself later for being 100% sure before making a life-changing decision such as this.

Well written I believe there's kind of a push on young minds to make them believe they are trans. No you don't have to be a typical male or female but transitioning at such a young age is a huge mistake that most seem to regret. Pushing kids to change genders is not supportive at all.

I think a lot of people need to know that there is a reason why puberty blockers exist. The effects aren't permanent, so if you aren't trans, it won't be drastic, but, because it delays puberty, it can be a huge lifesaver for people who are actually trans.

same. especially in america (im not from the US but i currently live here) it feels like you are being pushed into those boxes or stereotypes of how you should act or behave to be “normal”. especially as a woman, with societal pressures and expectations, it can be very difficult to understand that you are a perfectly good woman while not being traditionally feminine, dont use makeup, like clothes, babies, weddings and whatever else. im 35 and have never used make up, dont wear heals, im not traditionally feminine and am i’m very introverted and private and have interests and hobbies that are not typically female either. and i’m still a women, attracted and married to a man and it took me a long time to realize that there is nothing wrong with being your own brand of woman who does things her own way. and this is what we need to teach little girls rather than encourage them to take rushed decisions that might change their lives forever. and i’d say wait til youre 25 as it takes your prefrontal cortex quite some time to fully develop. i was a mess as a teen, depressed and unhappy for multiple reasons and ended up getting out of it being a fairly happy person. just the thought of being recommended to transition as a teen (and possibly accepting it) is terrifying.

It is incredibly irresponsible of parents to allow their kids to attempt to transition into a different gender. Teenagers are still kids who have many things to learn about life. So ridiculous!
