Amazing to look back on this and compare it to today’s game. I enjoyed watching it then and fascinated to see it again now. But it’s a great example of how the game was allowed to get out of control. Bowden did the job that was expected of him at the time. Broadhurst was up for it and did the same. That said, I’m very happy that head butts didn’t make it out of the 80s. That part was tough to re-watch.
Basically everything they did back then is outlawed today yet the game is as dangerous as ever. Not as many knuckleheads these days but bigger stronger bodies result in uglier collisions.
So good to see risks aka footy , being played and taken. Watch Gould as he kicks for touch. He angles the ball toward the sideline , and reaps an extra 10-20 metres with each attempt. We could do it TODAY , but , it’s a risk 😉
With 15 minutes to go and the game still alive, Phil Gould notices Les Boyd taking a breather on the goal line. Goes into dummy half and charges over the line. Smart player.
The referee was in line with the pass from Gibbs that went to Booth for the try. There is no way he couldnt see it was forward. The way Gibbs' body was angled he could only throw a forward pass.
"Sin bin or sent off. Barry do we know" "I don't know I didn't see it." "Well go and ask please". "Yes I shall". Poor old Barry. He used cop it all the time. Old Rex would be giving it to him. Those were the days.

If these guys did nothing but spend 3 hours a day in the gym they'd be a lot bigger as well.
The game isn't half as tough now ,it's faster but no way is it tougher .
