Katherine Chhuon no it’s not based on the French alphabet after the colonized. The alphabet is based on the Portuguese alphabet and it was make in the 1746 by a French and two Portuguese in order to Romanized the Vietnamese language and spreading Christian. We started to use the alphabet since Hồ Chí Minh becomes the president in 1945. Because the writing system we used before are Chinese characters and it’s really hard to learn, 95% of the Vietnamese people back then don’t know how to read and write this writing system, so he ordered people back then to learn this alphabet. Also this alphabet already been teach in Vietnam since 1746, it’s just not so many people using it back then.
