Thank you for the video. My son suffers from cerebral palsy and he loves it. He sits in front of the computer every day and asks to watch HIS trains. The length of the video and the sound are just perfect!!
The only way people like me can see America and its rail system is by watching these videos. To the power scenery etc is wonderful. We in the UK can only dream. Thanks for these fantastic insights.
In the mid-1970's I was graced to be able to ride in the cab of a CSX/B&O locomotive from Hyndman, PA to Sand Patch. Our locomotive was a pusher engine in a train of over 90 gondola freight cars loaded with iron Ore Pellets bound for somewhere west of Cumberland, MD. Memories of that trip are very special to me and helped inspire me to make Sand Patch the locale for one of my novels. I write under the pen name, Cameron DeCessna and invite you to read my book, Clay Parker - Growing up Gay in the 1950's. It's about a fourteen-year-old boy in Sand Patch who loved the B&O Railroad as much as I did when I was a lad growing up in Cumberland. My grandfather, Howard Cessna, worked as a carman (freight car builder and repairman) for the B&O and often took me to the shops in Cumberland to see the giant steam locomotives that were serviced there. Thanks for the videos of the run to Sand Patch.
My family took the Amtrak through there, it was a great trip. My daughter and I woke up early and watched as we came down grade. We are whitewater paddlers, and loved the early morning light on the rapids while everyone else was still asleep.
Thank you for this video. It 33:31, a scene is filmed that perhaps captures the true essence of railroading in the Alleghenies. What a great film! Keep up the great work.
Wonderful video. Have to say the horrible condition of the hopper cars in that very first coal train consist goes a long way to telling us about what we have so many derailments.
I really enjoyed your work. I expecially liked the clip of the eastern end of the Sand Patch Tunnel. That is rarely seen on any train videoes. Great job.
We see a TON of Cotton Belt cars out here in California, as well as some engines still painted for Cotton Belt (most with UP patches now), but Chessie System cars are EXTREMELY rare.
Well I didn't manage to find a full hour of time to watch this until New Years, but damn you weren't kidding when you said this was a Christmas present, worth the wait indeed. I can now plainly see why you're drawn to this area so much, it's just got everything working for it. I remember spending no more than 30 minutes at Foley on my first and only time out there and I had already developed the mindset of Sand Patch > West Slope, and this illustrated that perfectly. One hell of a job well done!
Thanks for posting all your great videos as I really enjoy viewing them. Your videography is outstanding and listing the engine types and numbers is a great idea!!! Dave Long Island, NY
o00o00ozy - I watched this video from beginning to end last night, and I am most impressed! This video definitely makes me want to take a road trip out to the sand patch this spring/summer! Love the scenery and the CSX helpers! Seems like CSX doesn't have a 'standard' for helpers like NS does, as it appears they just put whatever they can find, but correct me if i'm wrong. Looking forward to more videos!
A quality video in every aspect. Great cinematography and sound, even the video description has everything one could wonder. It's a great look at what can be overshadowed by the nearby Horseshoe Curve. I legit studied to this in the background and it was so nice. Did anyone notice the smoke emanating from those tank cars at 30:31 and again at 31:10? What was going on there? Hot equipment?
"Although I didn't include other scenes, foreign power is common on the Keystone Subdivision." Not anymore! Foreign power is scare and even to catch a foreign motor leading anymore is a rare treat. The last 2 or 3 years the amount of foreign power has steadily declined.
with open coal cars like the first train was pulling, if it rains and the coal get wet how extra weight does the wet coal add to the weight the power units are pulling? Thanks for an outstanding video
Trevor Longman The clearance project was (mostly) completed in 2014. Double stacks can go as far as Chambersburg PA. The project to raise clearances in Baltimore was shelved by E Hunter Harrison but since his demise, it is under review.
Train Q353 there was six power units on the at the front of the train. was all six unit powered up and why all six on the front of the train? if you have six power unit on a train does it matter where the six units are place as far as the pulling/pushing power goes? again thank for a very outstanding video. the country side and the trains look good on my large monitors. Thanks again. and the pictures was in HD too
Been working the Sandpatch grade for 17 years. Wonder if I'm running any of the trains in the video, LOL.
Thank you for the video. My son suffers from cerebral palsy and he loves it.

That’s nice to hear. How is he 6 years on?

Blows my mind how prevalent YN2 EMD’s used to be, awesome video!
Amazing when you think about how much weight those engines are pulling.
10:04 CLEAN YN2!!!!!!!!!

@mario oliva glad to hear your son benefits from something most people take for granted. Made me smile. To the uploader.... great job.
Great work, I love the scenery on this route. It is the inspiration for the freelance work on my model railroads.
Just awesome! You've knocked the ball out of the park for a grand slam. I could watch this endlessly. Thanks very much.
The legendary Sand Patch.
LOVE the Sand Patch .... My favorite route on MS TrainSim too .... :-)

My favorite UA-cam video....officially.
Awesome stuff! Nothing like the sound of coal being hauled through the mountains!
This is a fantastic video. Lots if interesting camera angles, some good power and a fair amount of YN2 as well.
WOW! An hour of Sand Patch. Exciting even without an EM1.
Wonderful video. Have to say the horrible condition of the hopper cars in that very first coal train consist goes a long way to telling us about what we have so many derailments.
wow long winding freights-coal marvels huge
All hours beautiful shots of trains.
Thank you for this amazing production.
I greet the Polish wishing you a Merry Christmas

Thanks for putting the model numbers of the power units, still trying to learn them all.
Thanks Kevin, you also have a Merry Christmas!
Excellent video - thanks for sharing!

WOW, another Chessie System boxcar at 35:45!
Awesome.
Great video!
Nice!!!
I wish my videos were half as good as your's are.
nice video I love it thanks
Brakes smoking a bit alarmingly on some of those tank cars around 30:30 and 31;10.
AndreiTupolev
And they smell like money. Most common comment on radio. "You're brakes are smoking." "I sure hope so, I have 12 lbs on."
outstanding, your best video !
Awesome!!
Thank you, zy.
Well done video!
Hate hearing the squeaking wheels. Hope it is not wheel bearings.
Do you use iMovie as well?
went to Florida on Amtrak in Oct 2009 lovely view through there.
Omg that was amazing!!!
long live america
nice nice
CSX 9040 C40-9W Ex C44-8W.
CSX 9002 C40-9W Ex C44-8W.
CSX 9018 C40-9W Ex C44-8W.
Since when does the Grade exceed 2%? I always thought the steepest was 1.94%. Just beyond Mance.
love to ride
with open coal cars like the first train was pulling, if it rains and the coal get wet how extra weight does the wet coal add to the weight the power units are pulling? Thanks for an outstanding video
I think it drains it
I surprises me that CSX hasn't upgraded its tunnels yet to accommodate double stacks. Single stacking seems inefficient.
Trevor Longman The clearance project was (mostly) completed in 2014. Double stacks can go as far as Chambersburg PA. The project to raise clearances in Baltimore was shelved by E Hunter Harrison but since his demise, it is under review.
23:43 how do you go Canadian Pacific, CSX, Union Pacific, CSX, *blank*, Norfolk southern, Canadian National, CSX, Union Pacific, ect on the Autoracks?
I thought the first one would have DPUs on it. Guess not
Train Q353 there was six power units on the at the front of the train. was all six unit powered up and why all six on the front of the train? if you have six power unit on a train does it matter where the six units are place as far as the pulling/pushing power goes? again thank for a very outstanding video. the country side and the trains look good on my large monitors. John Moore i
from rockwood to cumberland and from connellsville to baltimore
and from sand patch to cumberland
and cumberland to shaw mine
geat video
No, I use Sony Vegas.
5:20 I think that second unit is having some issues.
GE typical turbo failure
With typical CSX maintenance...
Ik, there's this one named ThePainTrain765.
Watch out for him, he's crazy!
cool
So where is the horshoe curve and the sand patch grade in PA
Horseshoe is a few miles west of Altoona, Sand patch is in SE PA
The Horseshoe curve is on NS track and so is the alliganys mountains
Both go through the Alleghany Mountains ya, NS is Horeshoe, CSX Sandpatch is Keystone Sub, Ex-B&O. Which you probably knew
