This match took place on mats. Also Plenty of fights don't. Go Watch Street Beefs. Stop saying mats are needed.
*Based on comments from the time
**The fighter in Red had the wind knocked out him but otherwise was fine
**Completing a throw is usually not allowed in Longsword Tournaments but for this specific tournament it was, which is why Red is so caught off gaurd
*The pommel strikes Red lands are debatable in power. It's possible they would cause injury but personally I doubt it. I think it would just cut the face a bit and cause a headache. Whether they should be scored depends on rule set and judges.
Lmao! Red's pommel strikes did nothing.
It is very dangerous to throw people if the mat thickess is less than 5cm (2 inches), and this is not even taking into consideration the risk of falling on a sword
@@rocksoldier Agreed.
Those mats really really look like hardwood
If they are on mats then why are they wearing shoes? It's obviously a wooden floor.

"why am i in the air" is probably the last thought someone would have during a sword fight
It's the last thought anyone has at any time, except possibly for when you're skydiving. That's why it's so effective.

@@eomaker9819 -kung fu flying?
Nah he pommel smashed his head. In a real fight he would have cracked his skull with those but since it's not a real fight he wasn't going full force. Even still the throw shouldn't have happened because the pommel smash to the head would have been a point and ended the round. He didn't wanna actually hurt the other guy so he didn't hit hard where as the dude in blue slams him full force. What we have here is a douchebag vs a gentleman
Why am I in the air? And am I up here 'cause I just don't care?

Well done Jacob. I half hoped to see Anthony pop into frame laughing at the end. XD
Not if you're both trained. I've wrestled my entire life and the muscle memory is there, train enough and its hard to be caught off guard
This video just opened my mind to the possibility that medieval armored fighting was basically wrestling with sharp sticks. Cool.
its often that most armored duels could end up with both parties on the ground grappling, usually the dagger will be taken out by that point though
I remember one comment about medieval knights being very fit so they could sprint in full plate, so usual vs. Knight doctrine was to disarm the knight then overpower it with superior strength and hand to hand combat... Which is their actual expertise, so more than once someone thought disarming them made them helpless until realizing they now have 150 pounds of muscle wearing 50 pounds of steel who can outrun you and about to go medieval.
In short, if disarmed but not disabled, it's WrestleMania time
Usually knights would fight with pole arms and kill via blunt force through the helmet. However, if they got too close for the pole arms they would pull out daggers, wrestle, and try to stab each other through gaps in the armor
When it was "to the death" it was. They would fight for a better position, then grapple for being able to finish the opponent with a dagger or something similar
on the ground rolling around until someone gasses and they get a dagger in the arm pit. bleed out.
In an alternate reality, a WWE wrestler just pulled out a claymore

For some reason this just made me think of a drip styled claymore a "dripmore" if you will.

U will be surprised at how much wrestling technique HEMA have, despite primary weapon based
Body to body combat happens within milliseconds even with bladed and blunt weaponry. There's a very good reason wrestling and Judo and the like was implemented into the combat arts of the Greek and Japanese and such.
Grappling is what they call it in the german manuals, but basically if you get so close to the opponent just beat the shit out of them. But then again there is actual moves for grappling
There's an opinion that modern HEMA rules (well, some rulesets, to be more precise) favour stuff like that. In order to give better representation to historical grappling - and it was common in armoured combat - rules were tweaked and takedowns like this can now score, and occasionally they score well. As a result, there are enthusiasts who criticize the way these changes were implemented because now they sometimes get to witness entire HEMA tournaments getting "stormed" by wrestlers who manage to win events almost like in this video: "clash, throw away your sword, slam the opponent", time after time.
But then again, this is sports for you, as soon as you introduce score, you create metagaming, and it'll probably be ridiculous. This is not even the worst example, because from historical standpoint there's nothing unusual about ending fight on the ground. Although the criticism also has a point: when most anti-armour techniques are banned in tournaments for safety reasons, it is indeed bound to become wrestling competition with extra steps.
His opponent wasn’t just surprised… he was floored.

Nah to be honest if you look at the oldest manuscropt out there by Fiore, he has much more grappling plays explained than sword plays xD Tbh nothing shows greater skill than properly executed lock, or throw, and it shows huge skill, it isn't necessarily easy to close in and get a proper throw when a sword is pointed at you. Shows why wrestling is so important to integrate in all martial arts. Wrestling really is the fundamental discipline of all fighting.
The guy got thrown on solid ground. I don't care what affinity you have for wrestling that shit's uncalled for in my opinion.
Trodai all i’m saying is that if you can’t grapple, you can’t fight. Either way, if it’s permitted under this ruleset, then it’s definitely called for.
Trodai also there are mats lol
Eric there's a difference between grappling and picking up an object and slamming it. Fighter 1 (thrower) had other options here, but it was clearly a premeditated move. Throwing is a common thing in HEMA (especially German ringen) but if either partner doesn't know how to fall correctly or throw the opponent, it's plausible for extreme injury. The ground in this video is not matted, otherwise I might have an altered opinion.
Eric Oseid don't get me wrong, grappling is crucial to martial arts since almost every melee ends up on the ground.
i read the title and thought someones gonna throw their sword
I've watched this a few times now, and considering how the grappler (lol) enters into the match with a really loose and non-commited grip on the sword, i don't think he had any intention to "sword fight" at all. Heck, I'm not entirely sure he knows how to use one
But he clearly didn't need to lol. Maybe that was the point of the throw--why WOULD a swordfighter engage in such close quarters if the option to drop their opponent on their neck presented itself?
He definitely knows what he’s doing since he’s in the right stance and knew how to displace the blade, but that was definitely the intention from the start

That dude has been waiting so long to do that. If I was the receiver of that move I couldn't be mad. Just mad respect in the commitment.
ive taken harder shots than that, but what really gets me is that the other person just was completely surprised.

Damn that thrust going into the transition for the throw was so smooth, it looked like he was waiting all his life to do just that

He had that throw planned from day one.
there was not a single thrust in this video, the fuck did you watch?

in slow mo you can tell just how much he wanted to do that throw from the very start

People say learn Jujitsu for self defence.
Incorrect, learn Judo. An untrained assailant will have absolutely no defence against a quick throw, and they will not be getting up and chasing you with any vigour for a couple of minutes. Getting slammed into the ground will stun you bad.
Just be sure not to slam them head first, you don’t want to get arrested for manslaughter.
@@InceyWincey but what if i do?
@@cibo889 I think he gets arrested for murder if they find this thread. He needs to find a new way to kill someone accidentally on purpose now that he knows this.
@@InceyWincey self defence is self defence! Who cares how I did so if the end result is the same? I'm not getting arrested for manslaughter if I shot my assaliant! At least not in this state.
"Everybody has a plan until they get hema throwed" -Mike Tyson
"Therefore, hema throw everyone."
This reminds me of the lesson my teacher said was the most important one and though basic if you don't learn it you can't be considered a weapons master. That's the very common mistake of becoming fixated on your weapon and not considering your other attack options. A surprising number of knife fighting demos fall apart if the people don't forget they have two arms and two legs.
This is not full spectrum martial arts, but specifically Hema. However, grappling WAS absolutely part of historical fighting treatises so it's 100% fine for Hema.
there is a reason why there are rules though, if you can't cut someone, then why use swords at all when you can just throw them to the ground and win the fight instantly ? there is a reason why free martial arts tend to devolve into grappling, because its the easiest way to defeat someone without seriously hurting them.
So basically bring a gun next time. Got it.
@@consarnit2071 Are the guns historically accurate to the period?
@@darthkek1953 HEMA is pretty broad, it does include fighting styles from periods where guns existed, so yes.

Hello fellow KGB agents.
Roll initiative:20
Barbarian: I block his attack and suplex him
Funny, but suplexes go over the head as the attacker falls backward. This was a slam, using underhooks/body lock.
@@RavenMobile another reason this is wrong is because rolling initiative has nothing to do with blocks or attacks
