    My Dad passed away and loved to sail. We had to sell his Laser sail boat because no one in our family knows how to sail. I told my mom to keep his Windsurfing equipment so we can at least try that out one day, and this makes me confident I can learn! I'm so excited to get out on the water :)

      You should have kept that Laser as well, and learn how to sail it. You have no idea what you are missing. Laser sailing is pretty close to windsurfing, it can be just as spectacular. You made a big mistake.

    Last week I bought a beginner windsurfer. Today I made my first practices using what I learned here. At 75 I thought i needed a new challenge. I was able to get the mast up from the water and at times sail a few feet. Sometimes I was able to stop and get of gracefully and other times a big splash. I was also able to climb on in water depth at my armpits. Long way to go. Looking now to compare what’s I was doing to the videos. Awesome! Thank you. Andrew

    To anyone who is new to Windsurfing, wear a compass and take reading of where your land is before sailing. I and another guy rented windsurf boards back in 2003 at South Padra on the Gulf and went out not paying attention ending up way out at sea before we realized it about an hour before sun set. We found a Bouye climbed up on it and still couldn't see land but decided to follow the Bouyes hopefully back to land. As it got dark, we started seeing some small sparkles of light miles away and out of pure luck we landed back on the beach we started, that was a real shocker, we were thankful. We took the Windsurf boards back to the rental place and they had closed up shop. If we hadn't got lucky and found our way back, I don't know when anyone would've searched for us out there.

    It's actually called a centerboard, daggerboards are easily detachable and slide up and down while centerboards are fixed to the board or hull and slide from a horizontal to a vertical position as demonstrated in this video.

    Hello,
    I am 60, I have started to learn alone with the help of your videos on an old 11' long 150l F2 board from the '90s and a matching 6m² Tiga/Neil Pryde sail. I like it and I am not going to change because this is the board I have and I don't have more budget. I recognise that it is not stable and I have to be careful where I put my 67kg weight. I have been sailing for 50 years but never on a windsurfer. I have been out 4 times and I am making good progress. Do you know any good online teaching videos from the ¯90?

    Every time I stand up to raise the sail using the uphaul, the board will wobble and shake and I will fall. It was quite frustrating yet this video shows her doing it smoothly!

    • @GetWindsurfing
      @GetWindsurfing  2 роки тому

      Sounds like a bigger board would help with this

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 2 роки тому

      No. This video was done in a small protected bay or lake. Typical condition with wind there is "always" chop/waves in the water. Rare that you can just have wind with no waves. So, yes staying on the board on water rocking back/forth/up/down is part of the "actual conditions".
      Here's a few tips:
      a.) When you feel unstable then just "drop" that sail and grab the line again.
      b.) If you fall back "grab the mast and yank the sail towards you" to grab the wind and stop your fall. Do it quickly and release quickly.
      c.) If you fall forwards "grab the mast and push the sail down to the water". It will arrest your fall into the water. Do it quickly and release quickly.

    nice vid, when you tack or gybe, do you use your feet to rotate the board?

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 2 роки тому

      Yes, absolutely. How did you know about this. One of the things instructors never mention, because they want you to "glide" into the turn like a freakin sailboat. Well a windsurf rig is not a sailboat and it can do more. So, you've figured it out.
      It's just logical. The sail blows/rather "cuts" into the wind and "stays in that position parallel to wind" then everything else moves around with it. Yes, sheeting in tack or gybe direction only bends the sail into the wind a little to fill the sail, but the sail never crosses the wind(unless you are intentionally setting up/flipping the sail for turning....and then it instantly whips back into the "cutting" position with wind). You can even do a 270 degree tack or jibe, just by brute forcing the board. Especially, if you need to do a quick reverse. Keep on...

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 7 років тому

      As a beginner you will "fall" and "fall" and "fall". Many times it will be unpredictable and your body will jerk and twist in all different position. Falling on your fingers, arms, elbows, shoulders...it all depends on how agile you are. Lower back bad? Forget it. Only, advanced/intermediates with many years of sailing can just pop up and "cruise" without falling. You don't need a sailing coach you need a personal trainer to get your back into shape. There is hope. I have a bad back, myself....I know the pain. Keep on!!

      @0uiallo 7 років тому +2

      I have a few problems with my back and I have been sailboarding for the past 3 years. learning with the uphaul rope was definitely harder, remember to lean backward and let your weight lift the sail up instead of pulling the sail up with your shoulders.. otherwise ask someone else to show you how to beachstart, when you do it properly, the wind lifts everything for you and it is pretty effortless.
      otherwise, once you are planning, there is not much back work. the harness holds it in position and you simply bend your knees and lean back to manoeuvre.
      try to find a light mast and boom.

    Is core strength, leg strength or both the most important for successfully learning to sailboard? I want to train this winter so I can learn this summer.

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 2 роки тому

      Yes, absolutely when "beginning" due to falling down, getting back up, and just hanging onto the mast(until you learn to use the harness). It's the wind, it's the wave and the weight and sail power that you must learn to tame. Grip strength especially. For core it helps but "knowing" how to use both legs and back simultaneously to lean with power and quickness. However, once you get it you learn to use/grab the wind. I've seen older guys in 60's get out there

    • @trexinvert
      @trexinvert 4 роки тому

      During the learning process pulling, falling and getting up is "very taxing". Once, you get proficient it's not your arm, back that you need to worry it's your wrist. They will cramp and gloves won't help. Then you get a harness and efficient!!! You could be 70 yrs old and be able to windsurf if you know how.

    Thank you, very nice video! I'm now starting windsurf with a techno 283 150 lt board, so its kinda difficult at the beginning xD

      Great that you are giving it a go. Your board is not perfect for a beginner but it will be possible. It will be a nice board for you as you progress. Good luck and Enjoy

    I did a clsss and they had us pull the rope to turn the board. This looks way better.

    Thank you for the video! As a beginner I was taught a different sailing stance with my foot right by the mast but in the video I see the person has it a little ways from the mast, parallel to the center line. Is either ok?

      As you feel more speed and power move further back and further to the side. when you have less power move more forwards and more central.
