Today's video is an interesting one! I welcome Dr Jason Crean back onto the channel to talk about how parrot diet influences parrot behaviour.
Parrot diet can have a big impact on parrot behaviour and we break down the topic into various areas to discuss exactly what influences this.
As the interview was so full of information I decided to provide it totally unedited so you guys didn't miss anything! Forgive any errors due to this!

After relocating two years ago, my Indian Ringneck began feather plucking. I took him to the avian vet, who confirmed he is in good health. He is eating fresh foods and roudybush.
Plucking is quite a complex issue! I have a dedicated video on the topic but I hesitate to give plucking advice in comments and usually recommend consultations for it!
I love these videos and the continuing education you and Sophie are providing us. I'm interested to try the unripe/somewhat ripe fruits. I wonder if Squirt bird will like it??

I am too! I reckon a conure may very well do. I've given Olive slightly under ripe banana before and she enjoyed that!
Always so informative! I can’t get the boys to eat fruits, I’ll give them unripened and see. Thanks for mentioning about clickers and not always having to use one. So important to highlight it. I almost didn’t try to train with my cockatiels because my physical disability means I am unable to operate a clicker but thankfully David and Sophie taught me about using a bridge word and now my boys and I are training daily (sometimes twice lol) and we all benefit 😊
Hey Julia,
Cockatiels can be really fussy with fruit. Chip absolutely refuses to eat it and only likes his veg. BUT Fish is partial to some banana!
It's so good that you did work on training them as it just adds so much to their lives and proves you can do it!
Dr Crean has a Black Palm... I am so jealous, I wish he showed him to us!!!

video full of information!! i'd love a video about bird's getting carsick. My conure vomits on the car and gets easily carsick (i'm sure he isn't sick, i think its because of the car)

@@TheParrotTeacher I really did. Mentioned was something I have thought about-what is the role of the estrogen mimicking phytochemical in soy (pellets) on hormonal behavior? Other factors such as light periods and over physical stimulation are commonly talked about regarding hormonal of soy is weak, but what about a outbursts, but NOT the role of isoflavones loaded pellets. For humans, they say the estrogenic effects of soy are weak, but what about the effects on a 75 gram bird?

My speciality is mostly behaviour/training (which as the video implies requires some knowledge of parrot nutrition but not to Jason's level!)
Regarding the little bit I've seen discussed and have read it would have an impact on parrots, especially smaller ones.
But theres lots of factors that would come into play here such as: different quantities consumed, the proportion of soy in the pellet, how often/much is fed, the species etc etc etc
What are some good ideas for parrot foraging activities?
I have videos on those topics!
But simple foraging involves foraging trays, toys etc!

I really enjoy you videos. I have a question. I live alone with 2 cockatiels and 2 budgies. When I go on vacation for 3 weeks is it better to leave them at home and have someone come in every day to clean and feed or move their cages to someone’s home where they will have human companionship? They will not know this person who has agreed to care for them. My cockatiels are very clingy. The budgies couldn’t care less I’m sure. Thanks for your input.

That's a tough one! I think on balance it'd be better if they had someone about all the time. If you leave them at home they will be in a comfortable environment yes, but that person won't be there over night and they will know something is off as you won't be there.
I think it's better they go to the other persons place. It'd be worth making them aware of your parrots needs/routines by preparing a little fact sheet. Also making this person aware of the common dangers to parrots such as non stick, teflon etc.
If the little one's dont know them well perhaps this person could see them so they can get used to them, maybe even do some targeting to establish that this person is nice.
I have a video on vacation prep that may help, although most of it covers options which you've already sorted.

That can be really fun for non parrot species! We don't usually recommend it for parrots though!
If you ever get another talk with Dr Crean, can you discuss sunlight for parrots? more in a "how many hours of direct sunlight and the sort a parrot needs daily?" way. I was looking into it and got some contradicting information. He touched it here briefly but only regarding hormones and not on how natural light vs artificial light can affect a parrots behavior in other ways. I was looking into it to improve my parrot's sleeping and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right :^I

Hey Sofia,
Sophie talked about this in her most recent Jason interview! It's well worth a watch.
But, generally natural light cycles are much better for a parrots sleep and hormones. We always recommend to clients to limit covering for this reason.
In terms of exposure for VIT D etc her video covers it perfectly.

btw, 26:15 would moving my bird's bowl around the cage or getting it outside of the cage be a valid way to achieve this?

I'd recommend Greywood Manor. I've heard good things about them!
As for herbs, I'd say go for fresh rather than dried! I have a video on what types we use most often!
