Hi Dr Tim & Dr Justin. I live in Katy and am doing a backyard apple experiment this year. Planted two nice 1" caliper open center honey crisp container trees I got from HEB in early April (5' tall and now well over 6') that are doing well. I had no other apples and knew I needed pollinizers so I germinated 17 honey crisp & cosmic crisp seeds from apples I bought (also HEB!) in February that I "field planted" in an east-west row on the south side of my house. These are now 20"-30" tall and vigorous. I realize these seedlings won't grow true to type and may not even be edible but I just want them for flowers to pollinate the two honey crisp trees and heck, maybe I will get lucky and have a decent eating apple from the 17 and also have plentiful opportunities to graft good apple varieties onto the "crabapples".
My question is have you guys seen Tom Spellman's low chill experiment (Dave Wilson Nursery, California) where he planted 30 varieties in Irvine, CA (southern CA Zone 9b/10)? It's very interesting and the conclusion is they are successfully growing typical "high chill" apples in Zone 10. Here are two UA-cam videos you may find interesting. Please let me know what you think.

@@sislertx I use a Hav-A-Heart medium live animal trap baited with peanuts and catch squirrels and possums. The possums I relocate to a nearby bayou and turn loose (they are very calm and easy to transport but squirrels go nuts and are a pain to transport), the squirrels get the pellet gun (sorry squirrel lovers). Also caught a lot of rats (before the Feb '21 freeze; none since so I think the freeze really took a toll on rats. Nobody thinks they have rats in the neighborhood but rest assured they are out there. Never had one in the house, yet.) Bird netting might be a solution for pesky squirrels, not sure. Even trapping /"pelletizing" squirrels might not be enough to prevent fruit loss because there are so many "replacements".

Thanks for the overview of different low-chill varieties! Can you provide any additional background on the Reverend Morgan variety and also any comments on root stock suitable for high alkaline soils like Houston Black? Also, is the A&M orchard open to visitors? Thanks!
