  • Here are the main differences between medical school and residency. In medical school, you’re in school. You’re a student paying tuition to earn your medical degree. During the first two years, you’ll primarily learn in the classroom through didactics and small groups.
During the last two years, you’ll be on your clinical rotations and learn how to apply principles to patient care, tune your ability to work in teams, and practice your bedside manner.
In residency, on the other hand, you’re working a job. You’re a doctor now with real responsibility. You take ownership of patients and are the one responsible for their care.
That being said, you still need to hone your craft before you’re fully licensed, board-certified and can practice on your own without supervision.
All residents require attending physicians to oversee their work and ensure patient safety. As the years progress, however, they’re expected to be more independent and rely less and less on their attendings.
By the end of residency, you’ll be ready to take care of patients on your own out in the real world.

It's interesting seeing medical practices across countries. In Brazil, med school follows the European model and takes 6 years to complete. After that, you're already licensed to practice as a GP. Residency is a postgraduate program and can take up to 5 years depending on the specialty

Same with Indonesia. The difference is residents in Indonesia don't get paid like other countries and they still have to pay for residency 😭

Thank you so much is amazing,,,, before you go to Medical school students are not only intelligent but they are TOP genius ,,,, I cannot understand why in California small mistakes of doctors they want to go in prison or take out the license ,,, and they prefer Nurses that very small knowledge in medicine,,, nurses is only 2 years to 4 years and the maximum is 5 years just to work most in bedside and assist the Physician , while Doctors minimum is more than 10 years and unlimited study and actual study ,,, they never stop research , study / work and apply directly to the human….we want to complain and need to investigate the Department of human affairs especially the managers of and employees DepArtment of California licensing We need to ask help in California to Department of Congress so they gonna be more linient to the license physicians………

Do you make money during residency?

yes, but you're pretty much paid minimum wage without any overtime for the first few years, meaning you're working 70-80 hours a week in some specialties like surgery but you're only getting paid around $450-600 per week

Someone did the break down and after going to undergrad and medical school you end up making about $12 per hour based on salary and # of hours worked. Plus you still have multiple exams to study for each year throughout the year and you have to do that in your VERY limited free time.

@@draxgaming8901 yes it does seem very draining and it does stray you away from your family. But I am passionate about this. You are literally saving people day to day and not to mention how competitive med school/residency is. Like most frequent gym attenders who strive to see the best of themselves, I really want to achieve something that I look back and say to my self I’ve done good

The first 4 years are bachelor, while the residency si more of a practice rather than learning in college. I don't know how many years does it take, but I think residency takes about 6-8 years. I think that residency makes you a better doctor because you get to interact with the patients, but you cannot attend residency without those 4 years of bachelor. They are all mandatory.
