Ken's shots are AMAAAAZING, for a five year old with a 1978 Kodak instamatic with a through and through viewfinder. Epic compositions and shadowy exposures with that incredible "beauty box" he's wielding.

Comment on the shoot- I wrote this on my blog and have also written it on Facebook. But I wanted to leave a comment so people can see it here as well. I'm grateful that Ken took me up on the offer to meet and shoot. It took courage for him to do so and I applaud him for doing it.
I found Ken to be nothing but kind, courteous and very sweet. Ken chose to send in his shots unedited, while I edited my shots. Those were decisions that we both made. There were absolutely no pre conditions to this shoot. We could bring whatever gear we wanted and edit the shots however much we wanted.
Ken focuses on gear, I focus on shooting. As a professional photographer and shooter I choose to finish my work. Ken shoots far less and chose to post his shots unedited.
To be honest with everyone, I really could care less how great Ken's shots turned out. I was so happy to see him out there and shooting which is something I've been challenging him to do for years. He earned my respect for his courage to do this, not for any photography skills that he possesses....great or small.
I'm sure we'll have comments positive and negative....but my hope is that we can look at this event as a positive of two former rivals coming together and sharing a great day together. I'll ask my followers to please be respectful with your comments towards Ken. It's fair for anyone to say what they think of the video and shoot, but I just encourage my followers in Fedora Nation to keep it classy.
Let's be the example of the best photography community out there....because that's what I'm trying to build...::)
    Thanks,
    Jason

I preferred Ken's photos and personality. The other guy is very vain... And has a poor sense of humor. Not to mention, the subjects here are so pointless and empty. The other guy had very nice lighting, but the suffocated framing, lack of attention to 'looking space' made his compositions largely incorrect. If I shot this, I'd be very uninspired. Boring subjects, complete lack of story and you're just annoyed because Ken exposed this situation in his photos perfectly.

Right so I'm a video/film guy so forgive me if I'm wrong but I guess the point of hss is to match the exposure of the subject to the sky so you blown out neither? Sort of like using large HMIs as fill during day exteriors?

    • @foulweatherworks7831
      @foulweatherworks7831 5 років тому +6

There are specific problems when using a flash in conjunction with the sun or bright ambient light when you have a camera like the GFX which has a dismal standard sync speed of 1/125th of a second which is the fastest the camera can shoot without the flash hitting part of the shutter apparatus as it moves out of the way to reveal the film/sensor. Just thinking about the sun exposure for a second at 1/125th with Iso 100 you need an aperture of f16 for proper sun exposure, since in stills the flash exposure is controlled by the aperture alone, you need a very powerful flash to get to f16 at any reasonable distance. So high speed sync is used for two reasons, one would be to shoot outside in the day with a shallow depth of field (wide aperture), so some flash companies make HSS available on some cameras to get a faster shutter sync speed, maybe even up to the fastest shutter speed of the camera, which allows you to bring the f-stop down. The other use is to be able to bring down the ambient light to below the flash exposure without needing gigantic lights. So if you are shooting on a sunny day, and you can get HSS to get you a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second, at Iso 100 you’re at f8, which is somewhat reasonable for a 500 or 1000w/s flash. then, if you want to turn down the ambient you would increase the shutter speed to 1000th leaving the aperture at f8 so now you’ve kept your flash exposure the same but the sun is now a stop below, you can increase this by another stop if you want.

Ken is not half the portrait photographer than Jason Lanier is, so I wasn't expecting much. But what I learned from this video is that the Fuji Medium Format mirrorless system is obnoxiously large and I am not likely to ever use it. And where are the zooms? Medium Format should be aimed at landscape photography, and yet we use zooms in any serious landscape photography.

Thought i would finally watch this video in its entirety, and what a complete and utter shocker it is!
1, Kens white balance is terrible, too green, which is caused by all that foliage and green grass, no compensation for the green hues, at all.
2, Where is the bokeh? Images that needed the bokeh lacked bokeh immensely, the back grounds were so untidy and distracting.
3, Kens light mod just failed big time, too many shiny skin reflections, sometimes to the point where her skin looked greasy, such ugly highlights/hotspots!
4, Also on the subject of that light mod, surely the reason to bring in a second light source for a shoot is to bring overall balance to an images exposure? Why then, are the backgrounds all blown out? Where is the detail in the sky? Why are the images incorrectly exposed?
5, He never stoops down lower to get a flattering angle, all his images were shot from above her eye level, which does work well, but sadly not in any of kens images here, the poses look so awkward from that angle, the image of her with her arms up and over her head by the barn door was so amateurish that it was embarrassing.
6, He does not fully understand what high key exposures really are, as id evident around 18 minutes into the video.
7, He seems like he is using a wider angle lens when he gets in close, the distortion to the poor girls face makes her look like a stroke victim ffs!
Photography is not an easy thing to learn i guess, but surely with all the years he claims to have been a photographer, surely his images should be much, much better than this? His skill set seems to be just one notch up from the guy who uses on-camera flash to shoot a sunset! The images look like my images when i first picked a camera up over 30 years ago! There is absolutely no finesse in his work, no artistry, no creativity (aside from that silly light mod), and barely any understanding of exposure if these images are anything to go by.
Taking photography advice from him is like being given cookery lessons from someone who cannot boil an egg properly!

Ken is not a photographer. He is like me Amature. The only thing is, that he will be bitching about Sony, no matter how good Sony is. He is only good to talk what he hears and not what he experience.

Alex Kuzmenko You dumb arse. This is exactly why he didn't edit his photos, because he knows he cannot match JL on photography and lighting, and it's easier for some dumb idiot to protect him, stand up for him, by saying " the images weren't edited, I'd like to see both sets of images unedited". Why do you think that JL did this episode of videos with the meet up and now photo shoot? It was clearly to shut his fat tattooed arse up, once and for all, whether it's regarding JL and his hat or regarding Sony. JL chewed him up and farted him out.

if you notice AP really doesn't understand light . Apart from incorrect exposure he also doesn't pay attention to the light falling on the models face. In many of AP pics the nose has an ungainly highlight which ruins the photo. Jason saw this and his pics look amazing. I think its time AP really goes back to the drawing board and learns about light.

Basically you reach him his place asking what is his problem. The guy does not have the balls to tell the same shit while looking into your eyes. First win.
Then you cordially invite him out for a shoot, masking everything like comparing two cameras. The difference between the skills of the two photographers is too huge that it does not even need to be stated anywhere. Jason wins hands down, without even having to state that. The images speak for himself. Second win. Last nail in the coffin.
Sorry for Ken, because this was a perfect ambush. Jason outsmarted you here.

Jason, new fan of your work and style. Subscribed and will be pouring over your past content.
The shot at around the 21 minute mark...Tiffany is in total shade lying on the ground. Quick question, I noticed your ISO was at 800 and shutter speed cranked at 1/320 with f/2.8. Is there a reason why you chose to increase ISO and not slow the shutter? Many of the shots prior were at ISO 100...even when she was in the shade. Just curious if there was any kind of technical reason for doing it that way? Was there a concern with catching focus and this was simply a way to guarantee the shot? Thanks so much for sharing the images! I've been shooting for about 6 months now and hope to achieve the kind of confidence you displayed during the shoot. It's obvious you see what you want to capture and know how to direct the model. BTW, your logo rocks man! Excellent branding.

Is there a rule of thumb for shutter speed ratio to longer focal lengths to cover shake? Since I shoot with a Nikon D800...infamous for mirror slap, I may require a higher shutter to focal ratio??? Or, just use mirror up constantly. lol

His body language while the model discusses the challenge in finding his online photography presence, his recap of the police "encounter", his interaction with a fellow photographer at 17:25...in my opinion these are more interesting than video proof exposing his lack of understanding even the basic fundamentals of photography...which has been a long time coming. He should have just brought the X-T2 with a proper lens rather than the statement he tried to make by bringing the GFX.

Jason, are your photos that you posted on this video edited? If not, whats the main difference that made your photos so crisp and vibrant compared to Ken's photo's. Was it the lens or the camera settings or combo a both. There is a huge difference. I shoot portraits with a Sony A6000 and the Sony 50mm 1.8 lens. Would you able to get shots of equal quality using that lens or is the lens you used in this video necessary? I also noticed that you did not use a flash. How did you get such good lighting on her face without washing out the background?
