I'm fully aware I am a minority of probably ONE in saying I cannot STAND Vinnie Colauita. I saw him with Frank in the late-70s at New York's Palladium (RIP), and never escaped the feeling I was hearing the greatest chops-meister to ever live (after Buddy) and "Why couldn't Aynsley Dunbar have stayed with Frank, instead?" at the same time. This guy's the POSTER CHILD for soullessness in a so-called "musician" and is THE go-to drummer of an entirely musically inconsequential age--what does that tell you?! Sorry.
Vinnie was(is) a drum technician for sure. I saw a video of Steve Vai reminiscing about Vinnie's reading chops: Playing some incredibly difficult Zappa chart; turning the page over while eating a sandwich and still keeping time. Apparently Zappa just shook his head and walked away. Good reaction.
Vinnie is as UN-musical as is possible for a professional musician. Or a professional anything, for that matter. I saw him with Frank in New York in the late 70s and all I could think was: "Why has Frank suddenly turned AGAINST drummers with anything amounting to soul in favor of professional chops-meister drum machines?" I hated EVERY minute of his playing then and still do.
Adrian Belew didn't read music when Frank hired him for a year contract on a handshake deal.
nenenene..maybe he had some other talants....
If you heard Catholic Girls, you'd know how to pronounce his name easily
Is the word "awe"?
